Marking the culmination of the four-day-long Republic Day celebrations, the beating the retreat ceremony was held today evening at the Vijay Chowk in New Delhi.

The Beating Retreat ceremony, which marks a centuries old military tradition, was started in India in early 1950’s and just like the Republic Day parade, this years Beating Retreat ceremony also showcased several new attractions.

    What was new this year

15 Military Bands, 18 Pipes and Drums Bands from Regimental Centres and Battalions are participated in the ceremony
New blend of music was introduced instead of long tradition of only military music
Sitar, Santoor and Tabla were heard for first time along with military bands
For the first time bands from State Police and CAPF were performing at the ceremony
The tunes that were played were: Lounden’s Bonnie Woods and Braes’, ‘Mili Juli’, ‘Grandeur’, ‘Redetzky’, ‘Pankhida’, ‘Galaxy Raiders’, ‘Inspirato’
As many as 20 out of 26 performances in the Beating Retreat ceremony were composed by Indian musicians
