City-based firm to make advanced fuses for Navy torpedoes

Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) has developed advanced smart fuses for torpedoes used by the Navy, which will now be commercially produced by a Chandigarh-based private firm.

Christened ‘Exploder Mechanism for Heavy Torpedo Varunastra Naval Warhead’, the fuse is meant to initiate underwater detonations while preventing inadvertent or accidental detonation during transit. It will replace the existing imported fuses that are at presently being used by the Navy. Varunastra is a heavy anti-submarine torpedo with a warhead of 250 kg and a range of 40 km.

The TBRL, an establishment under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), had started work on this project in 2014 and the exploder mechanism is the first-of-its-kind to be produced in the country, a scientist associated with the project said.

“The mechanism is an underwater fusing system designed to initiate the detonation of a torpedo warhead on impact with the target or in the target’s desired proximity,” the scientist said. “It also gives the operators surety that the warhead will detonate only when desired, which provides a higher safety level when kept on board ships or submarines,” he added.

The technology for its production was transferred to Micron Systems Private Limited and the associated documents were received by its managing director Vikram Sehgal from the Chairman, DRDO, and the Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development, Dr S Christopher during the TBRL’s 57th Raising Day function here today.

Commodore Saheb had to change his trip plans due to bad weather conditions up in north.

So I asked your questions to him and Navy is strongly pushing for Rafale M custom built for navy. But MoD has not made anything clear.

Can't say.

And about french SSN,he said that frogs are closed e but not close enough that they will lease us some of their used subs+An IN team visited Russia to check on grigorovich frigates and those akula subs.Navy listed down the upgrades they want in the subs and frigates. So it's almost certain that 3 akula subs.

Now p-18 is a different case.Navy design team had come up with 2 different designs 1.8000 tonne destroyer and other is 11000 tonne destroyer.
Plus navy will start evaluating UVLS and other new systems to add more punch to the warships. And they are also conducting design studies to increase the number of VLS on current warships.

Navy is banking hard on Nirbhay system and is willing to accept it into its inventory.

Not much is known about DEW systems but Navy is also looking forward for better propulsion and electrical systems for railgun system.

Commodore Saheb is here for 2 more days.

Ask away.

P-18 options are 18000 tons and 11000 tons?
Well, I ain't holding my breath for the 18000 ton variant. Its not going to get selected.

UVLS meaning a common VLS for all missiles? If so, that would be awesome.:cruisin2:

Please ask him about:-
  • Do navy's destroyers operate as squadrons?
  • Kamorta follow-on vessels: How many are planned (some say 8 vessels after the initial 4 Kamorta class), and in what role will they be used?
  • Can we expect future destroyers to field AAD in a dual role of BMD and XR-SAM?
  • Is the navy thinking about DART and PFF ammo that enables 76mm and 127mm SRGM on destroyers to act as air defence and CIWS systems?
  • Any plans for LPD class vessels to complement LHD (MRSV)?
  • Does the navy plan to field a 33-ton class helo (like the Ch-53E Super stallion)? LHD RFI specifies that the flight deck should be capable of handling these.
  • Is the navy interested in Osprey? If so, in what role?
  • Are the following images of an indigenous class of SSKs that will follow the P-75I class submarines?

Credits for pics @porky_kicker

  • Ask him what the theater commands would look like (meaning how would they be divided geographically) in his opinion and what they should look like.
  • How long before India finally gets a CDS.
  • Does the Navy need more dedicated satellites for networking all assets or is GSAT-7 sufficient?
  • What is the Navy doing to ensure cyber security.
  • Does the Navy plan to field NGARM on MiG-29K?
  • Will Bangladesh's submarine purchase complicate things for deterrent patrols of Arihant class?
  • If we, (hypothetical scenario) blockade Pakistan, what will be China's move?

Thanks in advance. :india2:

Edit (one more): Is it possible to blockade the Malacca straits in a manner that we block only the ships that are headed for China and allow all other ships to pass through? I imagine it would be possible to a certain extent if we can collaborate with all the other countries and exchange the IDs of their trade ships that use this route. IMHO the problem would be compounded if a ship is carrying goods for China and another country. In such a scenario, can we board such ships and force them to dump their cargo meant for China on Andaman, and if possible, on a bigger port on the subcontinent? Anyways, what are his thoughts on how we can achieve this, if at all?

8000 ton would be in same class of project 15B. 11000tons is the best class for follow on class ships.

Kya bhai, dara diya mujhe :rotfl:

But still, I remember reading it was 13000 tons. Feel a little disappointed. But maybe the 11000 ton design will allow us to make more of these than would be possible with a 13000 ton vessel.

Paisa kon dega bhai????????

Thanks, @aditya10r !! Could you forward by greetings to Commodore Sir?!

A couple of questions:

1. I know that the GoI is pushing the IN to de facto showcase that we are the net security provider of the IOR. And accordingly, the IN has deployed ships, aircrafts and other assets on an unprecedented level. How are things looking maintenance and turn around wise?

2. How comfortable is the IN at the moment at say using USN assets and bases around the IOR for Op Turn Around? Are we seriously looking at forming the QUAD into a Quasi Military Alliance? Is the IN as enthusiastic as the USN and JMSDF are?

Jai Hind and Shano Varuna!!!!

Hope these are cheap. The talwars are a bit oldies. Lack of flushed deck and integrated masts. Lot of clutter so less stealthy. The
Gorshkov class are a lot better (16 missiles). Good for increase in numbers and for anti paki ops :p

But same money could have been spent in extra improved shivaliks or upgunned kamortas with missiles. No need for extending Russian classe ships to 10 nos when indian ship classes end after jusy 3 nos. And then taking a decade to implement changes to the succeeding class and do steel cutting for next five years We need to go full chini style mass production of same class of ships rather then piecemeal orders of Indian class chips and favouring Russians. Atleast 8 to 10 ships of the same class in rapid time. ( Compared to chini 30 to 40 ships)
Krivak/Talvars are same as Type 054A chinis field. P 17/17A are the real proto destroyer-frigates.
