Pinaka

The Pinaka is a Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) developed by India's Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO). The multi-barrel area weapon system is intended to take out targets at ranges of at least 30 kilometers in support of the Indian Army's field artillery units. The original Pinaka was able to fire in a single salvo 12 rockets at ranges of 38 kilometers within 40 seconds. It was ready for fielding with the Indian Army after successful completion of user trials in December 2003. The DRDO was working in future improvements that will boost the Pinaka rocket range to 45 kilometers and a further version featuring a 100 km range.

As of early 2008, the Indian Ministry of Defense plans to deploy two artillery regiments equipped with the Pinaka multi-barrel area weapon system beginning in the 2008-2009 timeframe. The first Pinaka rocket featuring improved range and manufactured by Indian Ordnance Factories is scheduled for delivery in late February 2008. According to the current schedule, the Indian Army will take delivery of 300 rockets in 2008 and 1,000 rockets in 2009. The Pinaka launchers, loaders and replenishment vehicles are mounted on eight-wheeled chassis.

As of December 2003 DRDO named Pinaka key contractors: Tata Power, formerly Tata Electric, and Larsen and Toubro (L&T) are responsible for the manufacturing of the launcher and command post vehicle; Indian Ordnance Factories, formerly known as OFB or Ordnance Factory Board, is responsible for the Pinaka artillery rocket; and Indian Ordnance Factories and Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) are responsible for loader and replenishment Vehicle. Sagem Defense Securite supplies the SIGMA 30 artillery navigation and pointing system using laser gyro technology.

214mm multi-barrel rocket system / India

Pinaka, a multi-barrel rocket system, was developed at the DRDO and is in production for the Indian Army. This area weapon is used to supplement current field artillery as well as add some capability beyond their typical 30 km range.

The self-propelled, truck mounted system is equipped with 12 rockets contained in two pods. The complete system also includes a command post vehicle, a munitions carrier / reloader and a meteorological and radar unit.

Pinaka rockets weigh 276kg and are 4.95 meters long and 214mm in diameter. They carry a 100 kg warhead, which can be either a unitary warhead, or a cargo container filled with AP bomblets, mines or incendiary munitions. Rockets can be fired at ranges from 10 to 38 km. The control unit incorporates the same Trajectory Correction System that has recently entered service with the MLRS operated by the Israel Defense Forces. This TCS can handle trajectory correction for multiple rockets improving their effectiveness, accuracy and survivability.

Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System | Military-Today.com

Development of the Pinaka multiple launch rocket system began in 1986 and was to have been completed in 1994. However failure in development of critical components led to a six-year delay in the introduction of the system. First multiple launch rocket systems entered service in 2000 and it is currently in a low-rate production. Some sources claim that 80 of these systems are currently in service. The Pinaka multiple launch rocket systems will eventually replace the ageing BM-21 Grad.

The Pinaka launcher has two pods with 12 tubes for 214-mm rockets. The standard rocket is around 4 m long and weights around 275 kg. The standard rocket is fitted with HE-FRAG warhead. Eight types of warhead were to be developed, including incendiary warhead and cluster warheads with anti-tank and anti-personnel submunitions. It is worth mentioning that the Pinaka has twice the firepower and delivery range of the BM-21 Grad. It's CEP should not exceed 1 - 2% of the range. A further accuracy improvement is underway

It was announced that a 7.2 m long rocket with a maximum range of 100 - 120 km in under development. It is capable of carrying 250 kg payload. These rockets might be fitted with guidance systems for better accuracy. This rocket is expected to enter service by 2012.

Rockets can be launched from the driver's seat or remotely up to 200 m from the vehicle. Launcher has it's own fire control system and can work autonomously. It can also perform shoot-and-scoot missions.

The Pinaka multiple launch rocket system is mounted on the Tatra Kolos high mobility truck, license produced at Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML). Cab is fitted with an NBC protection system for the crew.

A battery consists of six launchers, six reloading vehicles and command vehicle, fitted with a fire control system and meteorological radar. A full salvo of the battery covers area of 350 000 m².

The Pinaka is reloaded by escorting reloading vehicle, which carried 4 pods with a total of 24 rockets. Reloading takes 15 minutes however it might be cut to 4 minutes after redesign of the loading platform.

It is worth mentioning that indigenously designed Pinaka multiple launch rocket system costs eight-fold less than the US M270 MLRS. It is also significantly cheaper comparing with Brazilian ASTROS II.

Pinaka is a complete MBRL system, each Pinaka battery consists of six launcher vehicles, each with 12 rockets, six loader cum replenishment vehicles, three replenishment vehicles, a Command Post vehicle with a Fire Control computer and the DIGICORA MET radar. A battery of six launchers can neutralize an area of 1000 m x 800 m.

Modes of Operation
The launcher can operate in the following modes:

Autonomous mode. The launcher is fully controlled by a fire control computer (FCC). The microprocessor on the launcher automatically executes the commands received from the FCC, giving the operator the status of the system on displays and indicators.

Stand-alone mode: In this mode, the launcher is not linked to the FCC operator, and the operator at the console enters all the commands for laying of the launcher system and selection of firing parameters.

Remote mode: In this mode, a remote control unit carried outside the cabin up to a distance of about 200 m can be used to control the launcher system, the launcher site and to unload the fired rocket pods from the launcher.

Manual mode: All launcher operations including laying of the system and firing are manually controlled. This mode is envisaged in the situations where the microprocessor fails or where there is no power to activate the microprocessor-based operator’s console.

Deployment
The Pinaka will be operated in conjunction with the Indian Army's Firefinder radars and indigenously developed BEL Weapon Locating Radar of which 28 are on order. The Indian Army is networking all its artillery units together with the DRDO's Artillery Command & Control System (ACCS), which acts as a force multiplier. The ACCS is now in series production. Presently, three regiments of Pinaka have now been inducted by the Army. The Indian Army will induct an additional number of regiments of the Pinaka during its next planning period (2012-2017) as the older Grad MLRS regiments are retired.

Does anyone know whether the Pinaka has MRSI mode? It is of critical importance in counter battery role.

I think the inducted version does not have the MRSI capability. We are working on newer versions.

ARDE looks to improve on multi-barrel rocket launcher Pinaka

Pune, March 14 After successfully developing for the armed forces an indigenously built Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) system that can fire rockets within a range of 39-40 km, the Pune-based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) is already gearing up to go a step further. The ARDE is currently engaged in developing the ‘intelligent’ version of the Pinaka, which will be more advanced in terms of its accuracy, guidance and control.
“While the rockets currently in use are essentially free-flying ‘area weapons’, there is a rising demand for systems with more accuracy, but with least collateral damage. Recognising this need, the ARDE is developing a variant of the Pinaka which will be more accurate at the same time enable complete autonomy of the rocket,” said Director ARDE, Surendra Kumar adding that command control, communication and computerisation will all contribute to the ‘intelligence’ of the system.

“The Pinaka can fire rockets within a range of 39-40 km, in a salvo of 12 rockets with 1.2 tons of high explosives within 40 seconds, its accuracy being less than 1.5 percent of its maximum range.

However, the new system will enable better accuracy within 30 metres, thus enabling the annihilation of precise targets,” said Kumar.

According to ARDE officials, the intelligent system will be able to control the rocket using external technological links. “Under the new system, the intelligence of the rocket stands to be enhanced as well. The rocket will possess sensors to orient its precision to lock onto the target, change the course of direction if found deviating from the target as well as decide whether the target is to be destroyed or not,” said Kumar.

The Pinaka during its development stage had made way into the Kargil operations, when a single barrel rocket launcher (SBRL) system was used for the first time. “After testing the efficacy of the warhead and its capability of meeting the range, in addition to army inputs, it was evolved into the multi-barrel rocket launcher,” said Kumar.

“The army had placed an order of 5,000 rocket launchers of which the first lot 108 Pinakas were handed over this February. They have indicated a requirement for another 50,000 of such systems,” said Dr K M Rajan, Group Director, FIE.

“This new system, slated to be the latest upgraded version of the Pinaka, will however be given a different name,” he added.

The new system with its limited range and least collateral damage will also enable it to be used in urban and semi-urban areas as compared to the current rocket systems which are largely confined to usage in the border areas.

The ‘intelligent’ system would be developed in three-to-five years while the production would commence in the seventh or eight year, said Kumar.

BM-30 Smerch costs a lot & so it is not feasible to purchase this system in large quantity.

M not sure about GMLRS but a Micro UAV will be installed on a Pinaka Missile which will be para dropped from a particular altitude to provide The pictures of the battlefield.

Because BM-30 has long range capability which current version of Pinaka is lacking. Although India is working to extend the range of Pinaka beyond 80 to 90km.

In 1991 Gulf War the US Navy was able to bomb targets using their main gun with great accuracy & preciseness because they had live coverage of the target with the help of UAV's.The live coverage helped the US navy to Adjust the co-ordinates to make the attack effectively. If it is risky to send an UAV in the conflict area, The army can fire a micro UAV in form of a rocket which will be para dropped & will provide pictures.
