This one's bigger than LCA IOC. Hope we go on to build some AWACS like Phalcon.
Prahlad if you are expecting it to be of same class as Phalcon then you are wrong. It will be decent system but it will take years to build something that matches Phalcon.

No, I said go on to build something like Phalcon. But I would like to know why it would take years to build an AEWS. What do we lack. AESA?

Tejas induction in January, and first homemade AWACS in February.

So far, 2011 looks like a good year for Indian defense!

Yes. AESA is not such a simple technology to master . It needs to be designed properly to gets maximum out of the system . Also after designing AESA Antenna we need to work on back-end processing unit to gain maximum out of it . this is something that require very extensive knowledge and industrial base for electronics to make those system. unfortunately we are lacking a little in that field but hope we will catch up pretty soon.

that's really a good news but we indian have lot of problem like in the case of failure, OUR phattu GOI will stop the all project. like we see it in same project.

Indigenous AWACS to roll out in February

The indigenous airborne early warning and control system (AWACS), integrated on board a Brazilian aircraft, which will give the Indian Air Force (IAF) a capability beyond conventional ground-based radars and tethered electromagnetic radars, will roll out next month.

The system, being developed by Bangalore-based Centre for Airborne Systems a laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation would give the IAF the capability to "see" beyond enemy lines and detect incoming, airborne threats.

A senior defence official said: "The AWACS has been integrated with the Brazilian aircraft Embraer according to IAF's specifications. The first indigenous system would roll out in February and the flight trials would begin by this year-end."

India and Brazil had inked a deal in 2008 under which aircraft manufacturer Embraer had to modify its EMB145 aircraft to carry an active array antenna unit on its fuselage. Termed to be "very cost-effective" and "probably the cheapest in the world," the system is expected to be a potent force-multiplier for the IAF.

The home-grown AWACS, beyond its ability to detect aircraft, cruise missiles and other flying objects at ranges far greater than what is possible through existing systems, can also collate surface information about troop movements and missile launches even while "listening in" to highly confidential communications between the enemy's front line units.

When inducted in the IAF, it would supplement the fleet of three AWACS purchased from Israel. The current AWACS operational in the IAF is a Phalcon airborne radar integrated with the Russian IL-76 heavy-lift aircraft.

India is in a select club of nations — along with the US, Russia, Britain, Japan, Australia and Turkey — that operate such a sophisticated system. Other countries — notably Pakistan, Brazil and Greece — too operate AWACS but at a much lower end of the scale in terms of capability.

lets hope drdo do testing and all asap and for god sake IAF don't reject it.... or defer its induction...

i wish the regional jet being developed by NAL gets test flight done asap and fits this awac on it.. then we will be having our own awac and our very own platform 100% indigenous stuff for IAF... else MTA by irkut and hal will also do

But this is not sufficient...we should target to manufacture atleast 75% of our military requirements.

India's Embraer-built Airborne Early Warning & Control System (AEW&C) is scheduled for rollout Feb. 21 in Brazil.

A senior defense official confirmed to Aviation Week Jan. 27 that the first flight of the modified EMB-145 is expected around May. "The first EMB-145 will land in India in August 2011 for system integration and subsequent induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF)," the official says.

India's Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the AEW&C program in October 2004. The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) gave the task to the Bengaluru-based Center for Airborne Systems (CABS). The initial project was approved at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore ($396 million) to develop two operational systems and one engineering prototype within 78 months. But the IAF could only finalize the operational requirements in 2007. CCS looked into the delay and extended the probable date of completion to March 2014, while approving funds to carry out additional tasks.

"The AEW&C with the systems integrated by CABS will fly in India in early 2012," the official says. "CABS have already begun the integration on ground-based systems [according to the] exact specifications [of] the EMB-145, including the seating arrangements."

AEW&C is seen as a force multiplier for IAF's surveillance activities and is expected to boost India's network-centric warfare capabilities. "In addition to surveillance and tracking of aircraft and UAVS, the system can also detect emissions and communications from radar," the official says.

The Indian AEW&C system can operate with a maximum crew of 12. "It can fly non-stop for 10-12 hours with midair-refueling," the official adds. "The all-up weight is 24 tons. The aircraft is being modified to enable mounting of mission systems and be certified for airworthiness, including . . . icing conditions, by Brazilian authorities as per the FAR 25 standard."

The AWACS and AEW&C systems are advanced radars, absolutely essential in contemporary defence requirements for long-range and precision engagement to neutralize hostile targets.

Both the Indian Navy and the IAF should require at least 20 each of them, although on different platforms and different capabilities.

According to Prahlada, the Indian AEW&C is an Active Phased Array Radar, derived from indigenous effort to "look some few hundred km" 360 degrees by rapidly scanning the area around it for airborne and ground threats.

The system is to be equipped with Identification Friend and Foe (IFF), Missile Atack Warning, Electronic Support Measures (ESM), Communication Support Measures (CSM) and secure satellite and wireless datalinks with Air Force Net (AFNET) and IAF and Navy fighters as well as the AWACS platforms.

The Embraer aircraft will be modified for mid-air refueling to extend their 3,000 km-plus range. Its sophisticated mission computers, already installed on aircraft like the IAF's Sukhoi SU-30MKIs, are indigenous.

DRDO's Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) has designed the indigenous radar, partly perhaps learning from Israel's Greenpine radar, one or two of which were sold to India some years ago without software.

Is this comparison at all correct?? Coz according to this there is no IFF in the Swedish, Greek & Mexican platforms... I just wonder if they are right.... I guess they aren't...

Numbers doesn't matter as of now. It's the performance of TD which will in-light the future. If the TD performs satisfactorily as per IAF then as per plan, CABS will move to platform like 'B-737' or 'A-319'. At that time, this AEW will get upgraded to AEW&C, which will mean no more Phalcons. This very condition will lead to lot of drama. Wish CABS comes out with a system glitch free and advanced enough to compel IAF say " Ok, induct it".
It would be more prudent if DRDO moves to MRTA platform for AWACs role. This would lower the per unit cost, increase production, increase the prospects of sales abroad through multirole capability and 50% of the profits falls into HAL's pockets and funds additional research for future.
