Docs turn baby girls into boys
    India - 26 June 2011

Girls are being 'converted' into boys in Indore - by the hundreds every year - at ages where they cannot give their consent for this life-changing operation.

This shocking, unprecedented trend, catering to the fetish for a son, is unfolding at conservative Indore's well-known clinics and hospitals on children who are 1-5 years old. The process being used to 'produce' a male child from a female is known as genitoplasty. Each surgery costs Rs 1.5 lakh.

Moreover, these children are pumped with hormonal treatment as part of the sex change procedure that may be irreversible.

The low cost of surgery and the relatively easy and unobtrusive way of getting it done in this city attracts parents from Delhi and Mumbai to get their child surgically 'corrected'.

About 7-8% cases come from the metros, say doctors.

While genitoplasty is relatively common - it is used to correct genital abnormality in fully-grown patients - the procedure is allegedly being misused rampantly to promise parents a male child even though they have a female child.

The parents press for these surgeries despite being told by doctors that the 'converted' male would be infertile.

While genitoplasty experts of Indore say each of them have turned 200 to 300 girls into 'boys' so far, only one could cite an instance when a 14-year-old was converted into a girl.

In that case, ironically, medical complications strictly forbade converting the child to a boy. The doctors accept that parents willingly convert girls to boys but opt out of the opposite procedure.

If that's not bad enough, Indian law, which has encountered nothing like this so far, allows these surgeries by its silence and grey areas.

About seven paediatric surgeons from Indore - who are associated with top private and government hospitals - perform these surgeries.

They say these operations are done on children whose internal organs do not match their external genitalia - most commonly, girls born with some internal male organs.

They claim a strict procedure is followed to determine the sex of the newborn, after which the external appearance of the child is changed to match the sex.

There is no system to monitor that claim and is completely open to abuse.

"When the child grows up, he or she would be confused about the gender he or she belongs to. This surgery can stop the child from having sex-determination disorder and psychological problems," said Dr Milind Joshi, a paediatric surgeon who performs the procedure at a city hospital.

A parent whose child underwent such a surgery at the age of two said on the condition of anonymity, "I think my child would not be confused over his gender when he grows up and can live a normal life as he would not have any memories of the surgery."

Another Indore paediatric surgeon performing this procedure, Dr Brijesh Lahoti, said, "In India, there is no problem in performing these surgeries as only the consent from parents and an affidavit is required. These are reconstruction surgeries where sex of the child is determined based on its internal organs and not just on the basis of external genitalia."

With no proper laws to protect rights of the child that young, the practice might have a larger social ramification, say medico-legal experts.

"The surgery can have profound, long-term psychological effects on an individual, who might not accept the gender assigned by parents and doctors before age of consent," said Suchitra Inamdar, a counsellor from Mumbai.

Calling it a highly sensitive issue, Dr Joshi said people should be sensitised about these surgeries. Asked about consent of the child, he said, "In India, consent is sought from parents till the child is 14."

This raises a lot of questions about rights of these children, who might grow up to believe that they wanted to be the way they were born and not corrected surgically.

There have been cases abroad in which such people - who had undergone the procedures at the ages when their consent could not be sought - have grown up and sued the doctors.

"In India, it is a completely virgin area," said medico-legal expert from Mumbai Shirish Deshpande, who is also chairman of the Mumbai Grahak Panchayat.

"The government needs to regulate these operations. They can't be called illegal right now, but if ignored, they can create a major imbalance in the sex ratio and have serious social implications."

The Indian Medical Association has a similar view.

"The Medical Council of India and the health ministry should look into the matter. There has to be some guideline or law on how a child who is barely old enough to talk can undergo a life-changing surgery at the parents' will," said IMA secretary, Indore branch, Dr Anil Bhadoria.

There are particular wealthy communities who are crazy about a male child (I won't name them), they deal in land and other business and during weddings they take huge amounts of dowry (its still prevalent in their community in a big way even today) this community is generally stingy and money minded by nature. I have a friend who is educated and filthy rich, he was tense while delivery and when he got a baby boy he behaved as if he got a lottery and emphasized that he got a "boy" and now his business will flourish even better (he only knows how?), that's the culture in these business families, rest of the communities are changing and I don't see them doing such idiotic things.....even a lot of poor who work for me have girl child and do not regret, ironically it's the business class which a wary.

These surgeons must be really GOD to turn a XX girl into a XY boy. I expected better of a forum of "educated" members.

Such changes do happen in the west too. Seems this forum never heard of X or Y chromosomes or births with XY, XX, XXY, XYY etc. Else it would be known that a full blown female CANNOT be turned into a male or vice versa.

Thread shows level of education PLUS prejudice of the members. DISGUSTING.

This obsession has reached a point of extreme. This is a terrible development and the doctors who do this should lose their license and be imprisoned at the least.

a black day for medical achivements-innovation.
Strigent laws must be put in place to protect child safety and their rights.
Abusers as such and including child sex abusers must be awarded death penalty.

Fewer things than this make my blood boil.

Parents should be shot and why are doctors performing this operation ? do they have no conscious or is only money important to them ?

The problems I have with this are:
    1) These babies cannot consent to the operation. Their parents are "playing god" in a way that is very unfair to the children.
    2) Waste of medical talent that can be applied to far more pressing cases.
    3) Social implications of gender imbalance and societal view of females in general.

Unbelievable, how can parents sleep at night knowing how they have destroyed the life of a perfectly normal girl by doing this. Any wonder then that we have been placed between Pakistan and Somalia as the most dangerous country for females. Just makes your blood boil.

Such surgeries happen in the west, but they do not attract so much attention.

Males have XY and females have XX combination. In such cases sex dtermination is easy and straight forward. But in rare cases there are XXY or XYY too. The former has predominant female chromosomes by female features, undeveloped, are there. Male organ maybe latent, but is there. In medical terms they are XXY MALES, because of presence of Y..

XXY are hard cases, but XYY are relatively easier.

    See Wiki entry

Klinefelter's syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    [edit] Treatment

The genetic variation is irreversible. Testosterone treatment is an option for some individuals who desire a more masculine appearance and identity.[23] Often individuals that have noticeable breast tissue or hypogonadism experience depression and/or social anxiety because they are outside of social norms. This is academically referred to as psychosocial morbidity.[24] At least one study indicates that planned and timed support should be provided for young men with Klinefelter syndrome to ameliorate current poor psychosocial outcomes.

Fate of such "males" is not too happy anywhere. A beard, but breasts, though underdeveloped, do attract ridicule even in the west. Normal marriage is ruled out even there. Such males there are known also as shemales.

But in India, hijras tend to snatch them. No law enforcement agency comes to help of the hapless parents. How many would like such a child of their's to end up in hijra's dens?

I would expect members here to first do some research about some topics at least. But it would be too much to expect, IMHO.

What is a XYY male? Sorry, but even XX and XY are unknown terms here.

As long as Y is present, it is a male, even XXY is a male. Such people need medical and surgical assistance.

What else can a bay consent? Nothing.
Coorection of pschosocial problems too is talent utilised.

Forget it. In medical terminology, they are not even females, but can be made into a full, visible male, NEVER a female. Y rules it out.

Alternative? Gloomy at best, horrible at worst [in hijra's den]. Have your choice.

    Look for
    45 X female,
    47 XXX female
    47 XXY male
    47 XYY male

PS: In west pre natal tests are employeed to detect such genetic abnormalities. If found, foetus is mostly aborted. Wonder if members ever heard of chromosomes and genetic profiles etc.

For education of members, those who can understand it.

46 XX female has a normal vagina, fallopian tubes and uterus. Period.

46 XY males have NONE of these, but normal penis and testis. Period.

[I do not use crude language].

45 X femaleis VERY rare, but they are are mentally challenged. La la. Many XX females and XY males too are like that.

47 XXY males has rudimentary vagina, but no uterus, plus a rudimentary penis, sometimes hidden. A simple procedure can bring it out. Viola, members' blood starts boiling!!! Never mind many such infants die because they cannot pass urine!!

47 XYY male [or 47 XXY males] too have have many problems of comprehension, like many members.

PS: Wonder if members are qualified to even discuss technical and engg of miltary equipment.

La la. What is a aerodynamic UNSTABLE configuration of a miltary plane? What are the disadvanges. ARe therec any advantages?

Too much to expect. Reason I do not comment on military equipment. I am asthametic and cannot afford to laugh too much. I am a coward and do not want to die laughing on these threads.

Hint: Bumble bee aka BHANVRA, has unstable areodynamic configuration.

This thread is nonsense guys.. I'm an health care provider and can tell u guys that this thread is B.S. Not worth commenting. Just think, you have a baby girl.. What are you going to do to it to make it a make a boy? Attach a male organ? All you can do is remove the baby's primary sex organs and pump it full of sex hormones.

That seems to be the case of what's happening. It may be a hoax, but even if one baby girl was put through this procedure it will have to wake up the Lawmakers and take notice.

It is called pseudo hermaphrodite, their sexual organs are not completely developed so the doctor at birth will give the choice to the parents weather he should pull out out like a boy or push it in like a girl!!!

The world is not all black and white or men and women. There are sexual anomalies born like this, one of the reason Religion is such a FAIL in explaining any of this.

WARNING:Graphic content, this is only for educational value. I hope members are grown enough to see its as education and not shy away childishly.

The G-spot or the Clitoris is actually an undecended penis. They chop it of at birth if its large.

NCPCR seeks report on genitoplasty in Indore

Taking cognisance of a newspaper report about several hospitals and clinics in Indore performing surgeries on baby girls to change their sex, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has asked the State government to undertake an investigation with a team of doctors, known for high professional competence and ethical standards.

The Commission has sought a detailed report within 15 days, giving facts, figures and circumstances of the cases, list of doctors/hospitals practising genitoplasty and action taken or contemplated against them.

It also wants to know the measures taken by the Madhya Pradesh government at the State/district and local level in terms of publicity/awareness campaign against the adverse effects of sex change operations as well as female foeticide and infanticide.

It has asked the government why measures to create awareness against preference for a male child have been ineffective.

    ‘Curb unethical practice’

The State government has also been asked to take all necessary action to combat the unethical practice, including cancellation of the licence and registration of doctors and hospitals involved and initiating penal action against them under IPC and other applicable laws/guidelines.

According to the newspaper report, every year hospitals in Indore perform hundreds of such operations on baby girls. Genitoplasty is performed on children who are just 5 years old.

The procedure costs about Rs. 1.5 lakh.
