U.S. Envoy Resigns, but Grievances Linger in New Delhi
Snips

Indian officials are refusing to renew teacher visas until the case is resolved, leading nearly 20 teachers to leave in recent weeks. Without a quick resolution, nearly a quarter of the school's teaching staff could be forced to leave before classes end in June.
To the Indians, the club is an insulting colonial holdover because it accepts Americans and those sponsored by diplomats, which means Indians are largely excluded.
To mollify the Indians, the club, financed by fees from expatriates, is now closed on Mondays.
http://india.blogs.nytimes.com/2014...=true&_type=blogs&_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=1&

===============

So, India is letting the teachers go without punishing them, so does our government say that, tax fraud in India is only non renewal of visa?

For the second snip, the logic can be extended to every club which has a membership on recommendation only.
So, are these all clubs to pinch Indians in the colonial way.

The snip shows that the author has a profound knowledge about India but in the wrong way.

Also, what does it mean to mollify Indians? Is India a adamant kid?
Why can't the author research before writing the article? In Indian law if you serve to people who aren't exempted from paying service tax, you have to collect service tax and pay to govt. what's rocket science in that?

Similarly, the duty free shop can only cater to people who are exempted from import tax and also for it you need a resale license.

It's respecting the rule of the land. Isn't exactly what spokesperson of US gov. wanted India to uphold?

Ahead of Nancy Powell's resignation, India warned US ties could be hit
Ahead of Nancy Powell's resignation, India warned US ties could be hit - The Times of India

=======================

NEW DELHI: Ahead of US ambassador Nancy Powell's resignation, India had officially and specifically communicated to Washington that any further consequential steps after the re-indictment of diplomat Devyani Khobragade was going to seriously hurt bilateral ties.
"The US embassy continues to refrain from responding to queries about the visa status and the tax status of the AES staff despite passage of more than three months. This obviously has led to a standstill on the issue even though we think that this is a matter that can and should be expeditiously resolved so that we can address other issues," said an official here, adding that Powell's decision to retire was not going to impact the investigations in any way.

The indictment, which was returned under seal in June 2013, was made public on Wednesday, a few weeks after prosecutors said they planned to ask Austria to extradite Firtash.
U.S. prosecutors said they have jurisdiction over the case because the defendants used U.S. financial institutions to transfer the bribes and because the defendants had planned to sell the titanium products to an unnamed American company based in Chicago.
Some of the defendants were also charged with violating the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bars bribes to officials of foreign governments in exchange for business.

"Fighting global corruption is part of the fabric of the Department of Justice," the acting head of the Justice Department's criminal division, David O'Neil, said in a statement.

News coming in US Ambassador to India Ms. Nancy Powell resigns.

US ambassador to India Nancy Powell resigns after diplomatic row
Did she achieve what she was asked to do is the better question. She is a experienced diplomat and what were her main skills. Look at where she was posted before and compare them to India. Another way to look at it is perhaps she was given the India posting for a thank-you by USA for all the work she did before well knowing that the current period between India and USA would be mellow and uneventful. Her resigning (labelled retiring) means there would be more juice coming up.

Many mention that a Indian-American ought to be the next ambassador to India. But look at the experience of Gary Locke in PRC and it would not be recommended. That was a total flop. In fact one can say Gary Locke would do better if he was the ambassador to India compared to a Indian American. Sure Indian-Americans are of high quality but they can represent USA much better away from India since in India everyone will question if that person is more Indian if not why American - because in the eyes of Indians that person is a Indian. Also the Indian-Americans will want to show they are American.

What the relationship requires is a economic oriented professional to be the next USA ambassador (and is able to control facebook postings and use of credit-cards of its staff).

US cries foul over arrest of NYPD cop in Capital for carrying bullets in his luggage
The arrest of a New York Police Department officer in Delhi is likely to trigger another round of diplomatic war between India and the united States.

NYPD police officer Manny Encarnacion was arrested at the Delhi Airport after three bullets were found in his luggage. He is out on bail but has been barred from leaving the country and is due to appear in court on April 17.

However, US parliamentarians as well as the country's media are crying hoarse over Manny's arrest, terming it a revenge for Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade's arrest in the United States last year.

"India is getting revenge for Nannygate", the New York Post said.

Encarnacion accidentally left the bullets in his bag when he was visiting India to meet his newly-wed wife Vida, an Iranian student, a report in the New York Post said.

On the other hand, leading US news channel CBS News in its website termed Encarnacion's arrest as an act of 'blatant retaliation' for Devyani's arrest.

"You guys like to strip-search our diplomats," TOI quoted an Indian security official reportedly telling the US cop while arresting him.

US Embassy officials had visited Encarnacion to assist him.

Meanwhile, the New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he is "troubled" by the detention of the police official and hoped that he would be treated fairly by Indian officials.

NYPD cop held in India as 'Nannygate' revenge | New York Post

"You guys like to strip-search our diplomats," a cop at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport told Officer Manny Encarnacion as he arrested him on March 10 for inadvertently traveling there with three bullets in his checked luggage.

Encarnacion was charged with violating the country's Arms Act of 1959 — and is facing up to seven years in an Indian prison. He is forbidden from leaving the country until his case plays out in court.
The NYPD is facing an uphill battle trying to help Encarnacion, trying for weeks to get the well-liked detective candidate and ex-Marine cleared. They sent a letter to Indian officials explaining the innocent mistake.

Just two days before his trip to India to visit his wife, Vida, Encarnacion, 49, was at an NYPD firing range taking his required recertification, sources said.

Encarnacion, who is assigned to the 25th Precinct, tucked three spare rounds into his jacket pocket, and forgot about them.

The bullets were still in the pocket when he packed his jacket in his suitcase. What the hell, how come he was able to go through US checkpoints in NY before boarding the flight ?? Guess, he was exempted from checking as he was NYPD

Inadvertent? May be? But sonny, how many inadvertent mistakes did you make as a cop then? Even RS MPs were not allowed to carry live rounds in airplane in India.

And, if this is the amount of vigilance the US security pays in searching, no wonder 9/11 happened!

I have known a few Customs officers who are itching to get their hands on some US carrying some or other kind of contraband/smuggled goods! The power of Media!

USA is just crying foul in this case. Which certainly isn't.

Here is a case of another US national arrested for related offence in BBI airport. ( Sep. 2013)

He, later secured his release from Odisha High court after trial and this lasted for a more than couple of months.

HC sets US national free, quashes cases against him

============================================

USA is just seeing the ghost of DK everywhere.

And journalists should research before writing an article about revenge.

==================================

USA rather than crying foul should be a party in the case and present his career record to Indian courts to establish that he had no foul motive.

=======================

Well can I then assert that arrest of DK in NY was a revenge for the above arrest of the gentleman in India?
Sounds legit to me. Drawing the same inference that US newspapers have drawn.

Oh this person was probably intending to spit bullets at the Brits, isn't it? That's why he was arrested.

Your NYPD officers coming to the rescue of his colleague arrested in India might feel so.
