Srinagar: A senior Hizbul Mujhadeen militant Muhammad Younis Bhat passed away due to brain hemorrhage. He was a resident of Khonmou Pampore area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Bhat was a known figure in his area and was respected by all for his highest degree of character.

He suffered brain hemorrhage while offering prayers at local Masjid on March 13. He was shifted to hospital where he died after battling for life for 22 hours.

Family sources said that Younis was just 17 when he joined Hizbul Mujhadeen. He spent over 12 years in different Indian Jails. He was released but arrested again and again.

“Poverty forced him to do menial jobs to feed his family,” said one of his friends.

He lamented that after serving his nation for over 20 years, he was neither befriended by any militant outfit nor any Hurriyat organization. Sources said that people in large numbers participated in his last rites.

Exactly! Some BSF personnel are just pawns in the chess game of drug peddling and gun running where the political kingpins sit in their ivory towers directing the cartel. Some of these personnel are black sheep in the BSF who need to be weeded out and punished as they are spoiling the good work done by the BSF.

The question is: Why is no action being taken against these rotten eggs? Probably some higher ups may be involved too. That's why the turnover of BSF companies/platoons should be quick - 3 to 6 months in vulnerable areas prone to smuggling.

Reports suggest that some of the personnel responsible were posted there for over 4 years! Adequate time for the nexus to form and operate with impunity.
