No need for any concessions to Tesla. Labour and land cost in India are already a fraction of USA costs. Besides tax on electric vehicle is pretty low under GST compared to diesel and petrol cars . If Tesla can't be competitive despite that it shouldn't come to India.
It could be on the factor that, if they are importing stuffs to make cars and if they cannot balance the books vis a vis orders received due to the cost of TESLA car produced in/for India, as these machines are technologically and quality intensive(without any concession from Govt), they may have to shut shop in India due to lack of orders in numbers.

Plus
Tesla will have to plan on charging infrastructure which otherwise will be very bad for Teslas order book again.

IMO, Tesla is bargaining on the "WORK" that needed to be done in India for the future of all electric cars in India.

Low costs of Indian operational expenses will offset the import costs for Tesla. Anyway business do get concessions for input imports for manufacturing.

If they wish to compete in Indian market in future they will have to open factory here anyway . Otherwise they will loose the market. Imported cars don't do well in India . So no point of giving concession for what Tesla will have to do anyway.

NEW DELHI: Tata Motors has won the first contract to supply electric vehicles to replace petrol and diesel cars used by the government and its departments as part of a plan to cut demand for fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions.
Tata Motors quoted the lowest price for the vehicles, which will be supplied at Rs 11.2 lakh each, inclusive of the goods and services tax and a five-year warranty.
Mahindra & Mahindra, the other contender, can win part of the order if it matches the bid by Tata Motors.

"Tata Motors won the tender and will now supply the electric vehicles in two phases," Energy Efficiency Services Ltd, an arm of the ministry of power, said in a statement on Friday.
The first 500 electric vehicles will be supplied to EESL in November and the remainder will be delivered in the second phase, it said.

The price bid by Tata Motors is 25% lower than that of a similar electric vehicle with a three-year warranty, EESL said.
Mahindra quoted Rs 13 lakh and has the option of matching the bid of Tata Motors to win 40% of the contract, EESL managing director Saurabh Kumar said.

The process of giving Mahindra the chance to match the bid will be initiated on Tuesday.
The third bidder, Japan's Nissan Motors, which undertook to supply 500 e-vehicles from its showrooms in that country, wasdisqualified as it did not meet the technical specifications.
"There were three players who bid for the tender. Tata Motors bid the lowest and will be given 60% of the order," Kumar told ET. Nissan was disqualified because it did not provide details of what it was offering, he said. "We will talk to Mahindra to lower their cost. If they agree on lower prices, they will be given the remaining 40% order. In an alternative situation, the entire order will go to Tata Motors," he said.
The final award will be given around the middle of October, after EESL receives a response from Mahindra, he said.
"The EESL tender provided us the opportunity to participate in boosting e-mobility in the country and at the same time accelerate our efforts to offer a full range of electric vehicles to Indian consumers," said Guenter Butschek, CEO of Tata Motors.
Tata Motors will supply the electric version of its Tigor sedan, for which batteries will be imported, Kumar said. However, the company has offered to supply only 250 cars of the 500 sought in the first phase, he said. India plans to replace its petrol and diesel-run vehicles with an all-electric fleet by 2030.
EESL floated a global tender in August for 10,000 e-vehicles as part of a plan to replace the five-lakh petrol and diesel cars used by the government and its agencies over a 3-4 year period.
Niti Aayog, the government's think tank, is working on a comprehensive policy to incentivise electric vehicle manufacturing. Making India's passenger mobility shared, electric and connected can cut its energy demand by 64% and carbon emissions by 37% in 2030, it said in a report. This would result in a reduction of 156 million tonnes of oil equivalent in diesel and petrol consumption for that year, which, at $52 a barrel of crude, would imply a net saving of about Rs 3.9 lakh crore in 2030.
EESL will identify a service provider agency through bidding to carry out end-to-end fleet management of the procured vehicles. The agency selected will also be responsible for coordination between appointed agencies, monitoring and supervision, reporting, complaint redressal and payments.

India-made Ford EcoSport heads to US

EcoSport’s new avatar in Hyd: Manoj Dadhich (4th from left), General Manager - Parts and Service Marketing & Sales, Ford India, at the launch of new Ford EcoSport in Hyderabad on Friday. The updated crossover vehicle which comes with 1,600 changes is priced from Rs 7.31 lakh (ex-showroom). Available with diesel as well as petrol power trains, it offers improved mileage, updated infotainment system and new exterior elements.

Hyderabad: Till now, India exported cheaper drugs and equally-inexpensive IT talent to the United States of America, the world’s biggest economy. And it’s now time to add automobiles to the list with India-made Ford EcoSport crossover heading to the shores of the Atlantic in North America.“Ford India commenced shipping of Ford EcoSport units to the US market. In all probability, sales of the India-made urban SUV will begin in January next year,” Manoj Dadhich, General Manager – Parts and Service Marketing & Sales, said here. However, there is a catch here. Ford is an American multinational automaker with headquarters in Detroit, the home of automotive industry in the US. The automaker taking Made-in-India vehicles to its home country is an audacious move at a time when US President Donald Trump, who rode to power with ‘America First’ slogan, has been rooting for locally-manufactured products.

Nonetheless, exporting EcoSport from India to the US has been on Ford India’s radar for quite some time. Ford unveiled India-made EcoSport for the US market in November last year ahead of Los Angeles Auto Show. That was the time when Trump as President-Elect was criticising American companies like Ford for shifting the manufacturing of small cars from the US to Mexico.

However, Ford then defended its move to import the crossover from India. Michael O'Brien, Ford’s Marketing Manager for SUVs then maintained that there was nothing wrong in selling India-made crossover in the US.“We manufacture EcoSport at six places around the world. We sell it in 100 markets, and so, just like we make Explorers and export from here (US) into other global markets, we are going to export EcoSport from Asia Pacific, and we are going to sell it here in the US," he was quoted as saying. But subsequent reports from the US indicated that Ford delayed sales of EcoSport there.

With Ford now going ahead with its plans of selling the crossover in the US market, the move is expected to come as major boost to India’s automotive industry simply because the United States is the world’s largest car market. The US-bound crossover is being made at Ford’s manufacturing facility in Chennai, where the American carmaker makes most of its models for the Indian market. It is said EcoSport, which will be the smallest vehicle in Ford’s SUV lineup for US, will be equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD) feature, among others.
But will it transform India as automobile manufacturing hub for the US market?

Suzuki and Toyota to make electric cars in Gujarat from 2020

NEW DELHI: Maruti's parent Suzuki will start making electric cars in India from 2020, in collaboration with fellow Japanese Toyota, as the two companies prepare for the government's ambitious plan to migrate the entire automotive fleet by the cleaner fuel by 2030.

The companies, which in February had signed a MoU to consider business partnership for electric vehicle products and technologies, said the agreement has been reached on the way forward.

"Toyota and Suzuki have concluded a MoU on moving forward in considering a cooperative structure for introducing electric vehicles in the Indian market in around 2020," the companies said in a statement.

As part of the agreement, Suzuki will produce the electric vehicles for the Indian market and will supply "some" to Toyota, while Toyota will provide technical support.

"Additionally, Toyota and Suzuki intend to conduct a comprehensive study of activities for the widespread acceptance and popular use of electric vehicles in India. Such activities encompass the establishment of charging stations, human resources development that includes training for after-service technicians employed throughout sales networks, and systems for the appropriate treatment of end-of-life batteries," the statement said.

Suzuki has already announced that it intends to construct a lithium-ion battery plant on the grounds of its recently-opened automobile plant in Gujarat. As envisioned by the agreement, in addition to lithium-ion batteries, electric motors and other major components would be locally procured for the production of EVs in India, helping the Indian government fulfil its 'Make in India' initiative, even in the field of EVs.

My brother is out in the market to buy an suv
He ahs not decided yet but its most likely be a hexa

The other contender is honda b-rv(petrol)..............top end model
I have seen many test comparision of Hexa and innova. Hexa is at par or has a slight edge. At the end of the test, they say that toyota engines are very very good and user friendly and maintenance free. They are not sure about TATA engine. I would say that you can not just spend 50% higher amount assuming that TATA car shall have a big maintenance. Innova just do not justify 50% to 60% higher cost compared to Hexa because of TOYOTA brand.

Hope TATA and Mahindra can get bigger market share.Even Maruti Suzuki is 74% Suzuki-owned
I think TATA is all set to become an another Maruti. The price at which TATA offers the car are irresistible. They are much better build compared to jusnk suzuki cars. I have one neighbor who has Indica vist which has already done 175000 kms. He says that he has almost no maintenance. Battery and shock absobers were changed twice. that is it.

Tata, perhaps the aria and hexa look good. Mahindra? I don't know. All of their cars except the XUV500 look badly proportioned (thar doesn't count its design was never ours to start with). Most importantly, under the hood, zero innovation. Even chinese startups are challenging tesla. Tata and Mahindra have huge industrial base and yet insist on making mundane cars whose technology would be praiseworthy 10-15 years ago. The only place where I could actually observe a substantial jump in quality is with the Bajaj Pulsar series. But even then most of my friends still tell me that the bike is great when it's brand new, but clock 20-30k kilometres absolutely everything feels loose and you wished you had a Honda unicorn or even an FZ. And as for our design teams... come on bro. Which Indian car is on par with the west or Japanese in terms of design? Give me a few examples. Take even the small cheap hatches.Suzuki Swift or the ones from Tata or Mahindra? Which design looks better and well proportioned?
Tiagio , Tigor looks much better than Suzuki cars.

Indian Luxury Car Sales 2017: Mercedes Retains Top Spot
Mercedes-Benz has retained the number 1 spot as India's largest luxury auto maker. BMW and Audi too have shown improvements and so has Jaguar Land Rover.
By Cyrus Dhabhar | Updated: Jan 05, 2018 10:04 AM

Although the total sales figures for Mercedes-Benz for 2017 are not out just yet, Q1-Q3 results for Mercedes-Benz already showed sales at an impressive 11,869 units...

By comparison, the BMW India group has sold a total of 9800 units in India in 2017, a whopping 25 per cent increase over 7861 units sold in 2016.

For the first time in three years, Audi India have released sales figures too. The one time largest luxury Indian carmaker and also the first luxury car maker to cross 10,000 units had slipped to the third position in 2016 and continue to stay there this year too. However, the German automaker has shown an improvement, albeit very slight, of 2 per cent with 7876 units in 2017 as compared to 7742 units in 2016.

The biggest improvement this year in the luxury car space though has to be from the Tata Motors owned Jaguar Land Rover. JLR showcased a whopping 49 per cent growth in 2017 to clock a record (for India) 3954 units.

Scandinavian automaker Volvo had yet another best ever year in India in 2017 with sales up an impressive 28 percent at 2029 units in 2017 as compared to 1584 units in 2016.

Excuse me for sounding a bit dumb, but I thought GM had exited India fully, at least as far as manufacturing is concerned. It is understood that GM keeps a presence in India for sales and maintenance of existing/remaining GM vehicles in the country. But I just read a few days ago, that GM produces a car called the "Heat"(?) and exports it to Mexico, all the way from India! Could someone explain, how that is possible Is the language they use "winding up operations" incorrect, or was it misunderstood by a section of the Indian media. If GM is closing shop in India, they can't simultaneously be exporting, and quite successfully, a model to Mexico. o_O

They have stopped making cars for indian market, they continue export to other countries from here.
I have always held an opinion that GM senior management in india has never understood indian market, there was bound to be disruption in how they operated in india.

I think its the GM Beat. Which used to be Daewoo Matiz? Not a bad car but GM had no clue how to operate in Indian market. Anyway GM India was a front for chinese automakes are thankfully exited the Indian market. The Beat is still produced for export markets.
