Take a closer look at helmets issued to Army & CAPFs by the MOD & MHA respectively. Both are Advance Combat Helmets with slight difference in design. They can withstand 9mm bullet from 10 m.

#Note : (1) Soldier on the left has Go Pro Camera mounted on helmet.
(2) All CAPFs have recieved the second type of helmet just NSG installed rails on that for their special requirements.
(3) More updates on commander's helmets soon which are equipped with rails , NVG mount and communication. Army's regular helmets can be fitted with same accesories if needed.

Army awaits howitzer mishap report, hopes artillery upgrade plan stays on track
The 155mm 39-calibre howitzers are being inducted to increase the Army’s capabilities in high altitudes, and will be deployed in the country’s northern and eastern sectors.

  • The two M777s are the first of the 25 readymade weapons that will be supplied by the US over the next two years. The remaining 120 howitzers will be manufactured in the country under the government’s Make in India plan, in collaboration with Mahindra Defence.

The 155mm 39-calibre howitzers are being inducted to increase the Army’s capabilities in high altitudes, and will be deployed in the country’s northern and eastern sectors.

The proposed induction of the M777 howitzers has turned the spotlight on the Army’s expensive artillery upgrade plan, which has been moving at a slow pace. It lays the roadmap for inducting new 155mm weaponry, including tracked self-propelled guns, truck-mounted gun systems, towed artillery pieces and wheeled self-propelled guns.

“FARP has been put into place to a significant degree, and co-opted with the Army’s overall modernisation plans,” said Lamba.

Besides this, private sector defence major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and South Korean firm Hanwha Techwin are in the process of executing a Rs 5,000-crore contract for supplying 100 K9 VAJRA-T tracked self-propelled guns to the force. The contract was signed on April 21.

To be produced at Talegaon near Pune, the 155mm 52-calibre guns are likely to be delivered by 2021. The K9 has a range of 40 km.

The Army also plans to induct 1,580 towed artillery guns at a cost of Rs 12,460 crore. A 155mm 52-calibre towed system jointly developed by L&T and French firm Nexter Systems is pitted against a gun developed by Bharat Forge and Israeli company Elbit for the order.

A senior army officer said the project was being scrutinised by an expert committee, and a fresh set of comparative trials was on the anvil.

“This programme needs to be put in place at the earliest because the timeframe for the production of Dhanush guns may be longer than anticipated,” Lamba said.

Truck-mounted guns are another key requirement.

However, the project has made little progress despite the defence ministry granting its ‘acceptance of necessity’ (AoN) to a Rs 15,750-crore plan for buying 814 systems of the kind in November 2014. The AoN for weapons is the first step towards making the proposed procurements. The AoN for the truck-mounted gun systems has expired and a fresh file will need to be moved to restart the process, said another officer tracking the project.

“Artillery modernisation continues to stagnate despite sustained efforts by the Army and defence ministry,” said Brigadier Gurmeet Kanwal (retd), a military affairs expert and artillery veteran. “Since firepower will influence future battles in a more significant manner than ever before, fast-tracking it is critical.”

Kanwal said truck-mounted gun systems were vital for supporting offensive operations in semi-desert terrains.

The Army is also looking at inducting the indigenous 155mm 52-calibre Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), jointly developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the private sector. The ATAGS is currently undergoing trials.

“Dhanush and ATAGS represent a significant leap in indigenisation, and will address the Army’s requirements for towed guns,” Kanwal said.

Upgrading existing weapons is as important as buying new ones. Three entities are also competing for a Rs 720-crore order to upgrade the Army’s vintage 130mm M-46 artillery guns to the 155mm standard.

This ‘up-gunning’ move will increase the gun’s range and ability to deliver heavier explosives.

A bunch of past projects were hit by single-vendor situations, which is a strict no-no under India’s arms purchase policy, and suppliers being banned for wrongdoings. “The Army is offering full support to the ATAGS and Dhanush projects to achieve self reliance in critical artillery systems,” said another senior officer.

Indian Army's misleading tweet about 1971 war adds to culture of jingoistic misinformation, puts Bangladesh govt in tight spot
IndiaGarga ChatterjeeDec, 17 2017 21:57:49 IST
Tweet

On 16th December, 2017, the official Twitter and Facebook accounts of the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), IHQ of MoD (Indian Army) with more than 5 million followers combined, wrote the following: “16 December 1971. On this day, 46 years ago, 93,000 Pakistani troops raised white flags and surrendered to the #IndianArmy. #IndoPakWar71 #VijayDivas #ThisDayThatYear @SpokespersonMoD @PIB_India”.

The AGPI tweet. Image courtesy: Twitter

This is simply false. This falsehood was retweeted and shared thousands of times, thus adding to the culture of jingoistic misinformation that exists around such matters. A popular Twitter account called @IndiaHistorypic with about 5.5 lakh followers also tweeted the same sort of misinformation: “1971 :: Pakistan Soldiers Surrender to Indian Army In Bangladesh. 93000 Soldiers Surrendered and Were Sent Back to Pakistan” (they have since removed the tweet after this author pointed it out). The ADGPI of the Indian Army repeated the same sort of false information about the surrender at Sylhet, again in both its Twitter and Facebook accounts, where it wrote: “16-17 December 1971. Surrender at Sylhet. Two Pakistani Brigadiers signed surrender documents in presence of the then Commanding Officer 4/5 GR(FF), Lt Col A B Harolikar. 107 officers, 219 JCOs & 6,229 other ranks of Pak surrendered to the #IndianArmy #VijayDiwas #IndoPakWar71”.

Indian Army totally geared up to face any situation in Dokalam: Eastern Command

The Army is totally geared up to face any situation in the Dokalam sector and any mischief will be dealt with "properly", General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Lt. Gen. Abhay Krishna of the Eastern Command said on Saturday.

He was asked about China reportedly stationing its troops in Dokalam, where the two countries were locked in a standoff for over two months earlier this year after the Chinese army tried to build a road in the area claimed by Indian-ally Bhutan.

India feared the road, if completed, would allow China to cut off its access to its northeastern states. The standoff ended in September after the two countries mutually agreed to withdraw their troops from the area.

Pakistan's ISI trying to honey-trap, lure future Indian Army, Navy, IAF officers to work as agents
The Pakistan ISI unit in Dhaka has been tasked with trying to get future Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force officers to work as agents for the spy agency.

Jitendra Bahadur Singh | Edited by Ganesh Kumar Radha Udayakumar
New Delhi, December 17, 2017 | UPDATED 10:02 IST
Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is trying to use to lure soft targets among future Indian Defence Force personnel currently taking National Defence Courses (NDC) in Dhaka.

ISI, Pakistan's intelligence agency, is trying to get these potential officers to work for them once they finish their courses.

The method: Honey traps or money.

The Pakistan ISI unit in the Bangladesh capital has been given this task. The man in charge?: Col. Akhtar Hamid, the military attache of the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka.

Almost 40 potential Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force officers are taking various courses at the National Defence College in Dhaka, in an exchange programme.

A report published in August said Indian intelligence agencies had warned officers to be alert to "increasing attempts by Pakistan and Chinese agencies to honeytrap Indian officers using attractive women."

The report described the modus operandi in detail: First, an Urdu-speaking Pakistani woman or English-speaking Chinese woman contacts the officer on social media. Next, a meeting. Then, the courtship. Finally, a video is used to blackmail the officer, and extract information about India's Armed Forces.

Army closes ammunition deals worth Rs 11K crore

Ammunition

Filling up a critical gap in the ammunition stock, the Indian Army recently procured ammunition worth over Rs 11,000 crore in a bid to boost its capabilities.

This is part of a roadmap that is being followed after the Army's internal review revealed serious deficits.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has also pointed out in its recent report on Army and Ordnance Factories that 40 per cent of the ammunition will not last beyond 10 days, and only 20 per cent can meet the authorised standards of 40 days.

"There is adequate stock of ammunition with the Indian Army, and it is well equipped for meeting any operational requirements," Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre said in a written reply in the Parliament on Monday. He added that 19 contracts worth Rs 11,739 crore were finalised recently.

Sources said most of the contracts are related to ammunition requirement. The ammunition for tanks and artillery for sustaining superior firepower is in the most critical state, sources say.

Army assessments have revealed that immediate procurement of ammunition and spare parts for weapons and military systems worth Rs 40,000 crore is needed to meet the standards of 'Minimum Acceptable Risk Level' (MALR) to fight a 20-day intense war.

"Getting the stock of ammunition to desired level is a continuous process, for which the requirements are identified every year and procurements are undertaken accordingly," Bhambre said.

The Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) has been falling short of its desired targets of meeting over 90 per cent of the requirements. The shortfalls ranged between 64 per cent and 95 per cent since 2013.

Between 2009 and 2014, the Army placed orders worth Rs 25,000 crore for ammunition, but there was a shortfall of Rs 6,000 crore. In next phase between 2014 and 2019, the Army's requirement was nearly double of the demand worth Rs 25,000 crore placed, but it had to be restricted due to incapacity of OFB to manufacture such high amount of ammunition.

"Some of the measures taken to ensure adequate availability of ammunition include placing of a Five Year Roll On Indent on Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), finalization of Ammunition Road Map in respect of certain identified ammunition and procurements," Bhambre added.

In addition, financial power to ensure the availability and maintenance of minimum levels of critical ammunition has been delegated to the Army for emergency requirement and to enable them to maintain military preparedness at all times.

SHORTFALL
  • The Ordnance Factory Board has been falling short of its target of meeting the requirements.
  • Between 2009 and 2014, the Army placed orders worth Rs 25,000 crore for ammunition, but there was a shortfall of Rs 6,000 crore.

India conducts massive military exercise near Pakistan's border

Besides conventional warfare, Indian troops are rehearsing responses to chemical and nuclear threats. The drills are aiming to evaluate the capability of the armed forces to strike deep into enemy territory in the event of an integrated air-land battle.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — The Indian armed forces are conducting a major exercise along the border with Pakistan, exhibiting their preparedness to respond to any "provocation" by its neighbor. The massive show of military strength comes two days after Pakistan warned of a possible nuclear war.

The exercise is "unique in scope and scale" and being conducted in battle-like conditions, says the Indian Army.

"A large number of troops along with tanks and other armored vehicles duly supported by overwhelming land and air-based firepower have commenced conducting fully integrated operational maneuvers to validate their operational plans. The exercise is conducted in battle like conditions, aims at fine-tuning surveillance and destruction mechanisms to support precision strikes and maneuvers by network-enabled forces," Manoj Tuli, a top Indian Army official said in a statement.

Earlier on Monday, Pakistan's National Security Advisor Nasser Khan Janjua warned of a possible "nuclear war" in South Asia, peeved with the Trump administration's national security strategy (NSS), which recognizes India as a US strategic partner to fight terrorism in South Asia.

"The stability of the South Asian region hangs in a delicate balance, and the possibility of nuclear war cannot be ruled out," Janjua was quoted as saying by the Pakistani media.

Furthermore, this is the first time that the Indian Army has revealed extensive details of a military exercise.

"With an emphasis on joint operations, the exercise would test robust sensors to shooter grids by employing a vast array of surveillance and air assets networked with land-based strategic and tactical vectors. Besides conventional warfare, troops will also be rehearsed to operate in the backdrop of chemical and nuclear contingencies," an Indian Army statement read.

The exercise involves new age aviation assets and armored vehicles, which are being overseen by a large number of senior officers of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.

So, in my previous post here, I had posted a tweet link on how good it would be if our economy would be bigger to pay our soldiers better. I re-iterate that again. But this increase should be acknowledged and welcomed. It was a long time due.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A soldier's life isn't an easy one, even in peacetime and particularly, in this age of terrorism. Life on the line of control isn't easy either with Pakistan firing often enough. As part of the recognition that is due, the government has doubled the allowance for officers and men serving in the Siachen Glacier, the world's highest battlefield, and also, sharply increased the submarine allowance for naval personnel. And as additional encouragement, there is an increase in the rum allowance

The Siachen allowance is currently at Rs 21,000 per month for officers and Rs 14,000 for junior commissioned officers and men. This is going up to Rs 42,500 for officers and Rs 30,000 for JCOs and men.

The submarine allowance was a maximum of Rs 21,000 per month depending on the rank but it could also be Rs 13,500. Now, all submariner officers will be paid a flat Rs 25,000 per month. Sailors will also get a big rise: they will be paid a flat amount of Rs 17,500.

Postings in the Siachen glacier area are difficult enough, but other high positions aren't easy either. Now, officers will be paid Rs 25,000 per month, up from Rs 16,800 in the past. The equivalent figures for JCOs and men are Rs 17,300 and 11,200 respectively.

The cutting edge of the armed forces are the commandos, the special forces. They are some of the best-trained soldiers and put their lives in danger more often than other armed forces personnel. They were, for instance, instrumental in ensuring the surgical strike inside Pakistan was a success. Now, all special forces officers will be paid Rs 25,000 a month and JCOs and others Rs 17,300. This is a big jump from the Rs 13500-21,000 for officers depending on rank, Rs 12,600 for JCOs and less than Rs 11,00 for the others.

Similarly, counter-insurgency postings are difficult: the maximum casualties suffered by the army are in these areas. There too, there is a big jump, with officers to get Rs 16,900 per month, up from Rs 9450-Rs 11,700, depending on the rank the officer holds. For JCOs and men, it is now Rs 9,700 per month, up from Rs 4,500-Rs 8,100.

JCOs and jawans would get a maximum of Rs 240 for rum every month if they were high up in the mountains and Rs 45 if they were in a peace area. The rates have been upped to Rs 360 and Rs 68 respectively. Similarly, JCOs and jawans will receive Rs 45 per month for haircuts, up from Rs 30 and Rs 45 for soap, again, up from Rs 30.

Post-graduates will be paid better-- Rs 2,250 per month, up from Rs 1,500. Officers will also get a dress allowance, spit and polish being mandatory in the army: Rs 20,000 while other ranks will get Rs 10,000.

And finally, there's a funeral expense for all officers and men. It was Rs 6,000 for a death in the family. It is Rs 9000 now.

This is BS of the highest order. The aim is to try and show to Trump and the US-SD backers that Napaki fauj "far from being an impediment to peace process is actually all for peace and it is only the communal Hindu fascists led by Narendra Modi, who oppose peace with Pakistan."

Of course LoC whipping is hurting as well so Napaki fauj, which actually controls Shitistani policies on relations with India wishes to pass on the buck to the civvies.

ot in the spotlight much, but the Army-IAF exercise #HameshaVijayee on right now in the Thar Desert is said to be a big step in the validation/testing of India’s capability for a deep air-land strike into enemy territory. Pictures from the drills:
