Spike MR is not a shoulder launched ATGM and is hence quite cumbersome. I am not sure why India selected it at all. Shoulder launched missile was more important. Spike is a tripod launched missile. It requires one person to carry the tripod, one to carry the launcher and a missile and another one or two to carry more missiles
That is where SPIKE-MR ToT comes in. I am not sure if we will ever get SMAW type shoulder launch ATGM with 0.5-1 km range. That will be very hard
LoC is highly mountainous and difficult for using ATGM. For the border post strikes, it is better to use Mortar or unguided rockets or Carl Gustaf type 2nd generation ATGM
Understand how ATGM are deployed in Indian Army:-
  • Infantry
    • Each section has a soldier carrying a Carl Gustaf. It is not meant for Anti-tank roles. Not even in mountains.
    • Each Infantry battalion has one support company in which there is a dedicated ATGM platoon with 2 detachments each of long-range ATGM (Konkur-M) and short-range ATGM (Milan-2/2T, now to be replaced by Spike MR and maybe MP-ATGM of DRDO. (2 launchers per detachment I think)
    • Mountain Infantry units have lesser ATGM, one detachment of Long range and one of short range ATGM AFAIK. But they do need ATGM, just Cark Gustaf won't do.
    • Konkur-M might be replaced by either Spike-LR II or DRDO CLGM tripod-version.
    • The infantry has no requirement for SMAW. It does not fit in the Infantry battalion's TO&E. Its too short range.
    • Tripod ATGM are no problem for the Infantry units because they are deployed in a crew-served heavy weapon role.
  • Mechanised Infantry (Wheeled Recce and Support battalions)
    • Each such battalion has BRDM mounted ATGM and Jeep-mounted ATGM.
    • These battalions are attached to RAPIDs (one each) and some infantry divs (maybe).
    • Current ATGM used in this role will most likely field DRDO CLGM in the future I hope, otherwise it will be Spike LR II (or maybe even Spike ER).
    • Tracked Recce and Support Battalions will most likely field NAMICA in the future.

I wish there were more Army schools in our country as well as colleges which had closer ties with ISRO, DRDO, HAL and Army institution.
Armed forces screwed the pooch, royally. AFMC is one of the best of its kind, only behind AIIMS Delhi. Despite this superbly successful example, armed forces failed to capitalize on it and the result is in front of everyone to see.

Had armed forces entered the business at an opportune time with better management, we would have seen research and engineering institutes which would have had mopped the floor with the likes of IITs.

Well.... it didn't take time for IA procurement to fall back into bad habits..
After manohar parrikar had taken over, documentation related to tendering/procurement had improved quite a bit.

Looks like we are back again in 2014, where RFI with stupid mistakes are being issued again.

ITI targets ₹7,000-crore Army project

Deal involves providing and maintaining communication equipment, network over a 13-year period

State-owned ITI is hoping to secure a ₹7,000-crore contract from the Indian army for providing and maintaining its strategic communication network over a 13-year period, according to a top official.

“It is a 13-year-long project in which we will provide the equipment and warranty for five years and maintain it (the network) for eight years,” said S. Gopu, ITI chairman and managing director.

In an interview, Mr. Gopu said “We did phase one, two and three of ASCON. We are technically qualified. Other companies including BEL and RailTel are in the fray.”

Order pipeline
The struggling PSU, which currently has an order pipeline of ₹1,600 crore, is targeting ₹10,000 crore worth of deals within the next two years, including the ASCON project.

Army Static Switched Communication Network (ASCON ) is the army’s telecom network backbone implemented in phases along the borders. The network consists of a large number of voice and data switches interconnected with various media types like microwave radio, optical fibre and satellites.

ASCON network is secured using bulk encryption. The project includes civil works for providing the complete infrastructure required at various stations in addition to supply, installation, commissioning and maintenance of telecom equipment, satcom equipment, optical fibre cables, and equipment.

Phase-IV will be pan-India network spanning different terrains at the northern, north-eastern and western regions as well as locations in the hinterland. The network will be DWDM and IP/MPLS-based backbone network with supporting value-added services, including video conferencing, broadcast and multicast facilities.

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) is an optical multiplexing technology used to increase bandwidth over existing fibre networks by combining and transmitting multiple signals simultaneously at different wavelengths on the same fibre.

“Under the Network for Spectrum project ITI has got order worth ₹80 crore,” Mr. Gopu said. Network for Spectrum is a dedicated communications network that the Telecom Department is setting up for the defence forces on the band of airwaves vacated for civilian use “It consists of various parts, including fibre laying and equipment supply. The equipment that you are supplying to this project also needs encryption technology and that we have qualified.”

Optical fibre
As part of the project, ITI will deploy optical fibre for about 13,000 km. The firm has already completed 70% of the work and the entire project is expected to be completed by this year end.

“ITI has the highest number of approvals for encryption products from the defence,” he said. “We intend to take up solutions depending on the industry and customer requirements for encryption of mobile handsets, HF radio, software defined radio, and others.

Can someone help me out please: How are the three levels of warfare (Strategic, Operational and Tactical) defined in the Indian Army's perspective?

Following is what I guessed:-
  • According to echelon
    • Strategic
      • Command
    • Operational
      • Corps
      • Divisions
    • Tactical
      • Brigades
      • Battalion/Regiment
  • Depth of warfare
    • Tactical: <20 km from border/front
    • Operational: ?
    • Strategic: ?

Indian Army changes tack, puts tanks at Akhnoor
Tuesday, September 26, 2017 By: Tribune India Source Link: CLICK HERE

India has reorganised an Army division to hold tanks and armoured vehicles in its arsenal and located it to tackle threats from across the Line of Control (LoC) in the lower parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The division is tasked with countering the threat in the Chammb-Jaurian sector, west of Akhnoor.

The area is of immense strategic importance. During the 1965 and 1971 wars, Pakistan had tried to run its armoured columns through these fertile plains located smack on the LoC in an attempt to cut off India’s access to Kashmir, resulting in pitched tank battles.

The existing 10th Infantry Division of the Indian Army based at Akhnoor has now been converted into “Rapids” or Reorganised Army Plains Infantry Divisions. It will hold two regiments of tanks (around 100) and another two regiments of mechanised armoured vehicles (100). The Army uses the Russian-built BMP as armoured vehicles.

This will be the first of the series under Army’s Northern Command. The first ones came up at locations under the Western Command in the late 1980s. Former Army Chief General K Sundarji (retd) is credited with the creation of “Rapids”.

Each of “Rapids” also consists of two infantry brigades, artillery elements, a reconnaissance and support battalion, an engineer regiment, a signals regiment and latest surveillance with target acquisition equipment.

On September 1, 1965, the Pakistan army had launched “Operation Grand Slam” to take control of the Akhnoor bridge in a bid to cut off the Nowshera-Rajouri-Poonch area from Jammu. In 1971, the tactic was repeated.

This is huge. This will be the seventh RAPID. The other six are 4 RAPID, 12 RAPID, 14 RAPID, 18 RAPID, 24 RAPID, 36 RAPID. So is the entire Armoured brigade in place or have they just started, and only raised one tank regiment yet?
