Army to use portable jammers to curb IED threat during patrols

After a number of blasts triggered by Pakistani army and militants using remote control devices, Indian troops have been equipped with portable jammers for protection as they patrol the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

It is now a part of the drill that one of the jawans of the patrol team will carry the jammer for disarming any remote-controlled Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Weighing around 80kgs along with batteries, the machine can jam any frequency in a radius of 50 metres during mobile patrolling, according to the operator of jammer.

Wearing one such machine on his back and armed with digital tools, Sepoy Surinder Singh (name changed) said, “Jammers are now part of the patrolling or any operation, be it anti-infiltration or anything else along LoC.”

The jawan, while trekking in a mountainous area somewhere in the Noushera sector, tells a group of visiting media persons that, “It is a security measure against RC (remote- controlled) IEDs attacks along the LoC.”

The jammers have been inducted to ensure safety of the soldiers during patrolling on the LoC as there have been a series of blasts of IEDs triggered by the enemy.

The jammer has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the army. It has been indigenously designed and developed by the Electronic Counter Measure Systems for protection of VVIPs and Security convoys from the threat of radio controlled bombs often called IEDs.

The Protection System radiates high power electromagnetic signals and prevents the detonation of radio controlled bombs and IEDs, officials said.

The machine is a portable integrated compact communication system developed for various users in different configurations.

It covers HF, VHF & UHF ranges and available in cluster configuration for Army use or in suite configuration for Navy’s ground as well as onboard usage.

“It has full capability to detect, locate and jam frequency agile communications as well as monitoring and recording of conventional signals.

These IED jammers are to be put to use for service deployment and operational usage for quick reaction

teams, VIP protection vehicles, convoy escorts, movement of troops and counter insurgency operations.

Paris All Set To Witness Fashion Line Dedicated To Indian Army

Among all the sartorial razzmatazz, the upcoming edition of the French European Indian Fashion Week (FEIFW) will witness a special line dedicated to the Indian Army.
To be held from October 21-23 in Paris, FEIFW will salute the spirit of Indian soldiers through the move.

"We are going to show a collection dedicated to the Indian Army at FEIFW in Paris," read a statement issued by the organizers.

To create a buzz for the event, the organisers also hosted a fashion flashmob in the capital's busy Connaught Place area. While people were going about their regular business--crowd of models and children swarmed around in front of the central park.

Models sashayed up and down a runway, and designers, acid attack survivors from NGO Acid Survivors Foundation India and children from NGO Shrishti participated in the flash-mob to salute the Indian Army for their bravery.
Satish Reddy, President of FEIFW, said, "I want to salute to our armed forces, who selflessly risk their lives to protect our beloved country and our families."
Show director Liza Varma said, "I am very happy that people from all over India are saluting the hardships of our soldiers and this was to show them that their efforts are being appreciated by a grateful nation."

It means that standing amongst the ranks of martyrs isnt easy... only one who loves (his country / his people) without any limits will put his head on the line.

Army inducts customised hi-tech coaches for troops

Lieutenant General R.K. Sharma, Director General (Operation Logistics & Strategic Movement), New Delhi, inspecting the coaches built by the ICF in Chennai.
The rakes will have on-board power generator, RO plants and bio-toilets.

The Indian Army last week inducted customised coaches designed and developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) here for military operations. The coaches built with facilities such as on-board power generator, reverse osmosis plants and bio-toilets will be part of exclusive military trains transporting defence personnel and equipment.
The Ministry of Defence had placed an order for 40 Two-Tier AC coaches and 32 Pantry Cars or Military Langars at a cost of Rs. 250 crore.
According to defence sources, Lt. Gen. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Director-General (Operation Logistic & Strategic Movement) inspected the coaches at the ICF last week and expressed satisfaction over the quality and prompt delivery.
“This is the first time that we have procured custom-made coaches that suit our requirements. The 46-berth AC coaches have emergency evacuation facility in all windows and the two doors to the air conditioned portion can be operated both inward and outward. There are two RO plants in each coach.
The Military Langar has an on-board 75 KV generator, deep freezer and utensil washer.
The Periodic Overhauling of the coaches would be done by the railways.
“The coaches are the first of its kind in military operations. Keeping in mind the requirement of defence personnel, these coaches were specifically designed to enhance the comfort level of troops on the move,” the official said.

I was saying last month that there has been no meaningful expenditure for more than a quarter this year. And now regular orders of Guns and ammo(in small numbers) are being placed this month onwards.

It seems the gap was because there has been a re-delegation of financial powers(DELEGATION OF FINANCIAL POWERS TO DEFENCE SERVICES- 2016) and discretionary amounts of area commanders have been increased from 100 crores to 400 crores. This would be outside of central procurement. That would mean that if any area commanders wants to purchase any additional Guns, ammo, BPJ or helmets they can do it directly from the pre-qualified list of vendors. same with all forces under MoD.

Atleast one step of getting them approved from Delhi is reduced.

This allocation of 400 crores is for what time frame?

Irrespective, a great step. Local manufacturers like MKU and Tonbo should really go in for agressive marketing to area commanders now to sensitize them of the world class products available right here in India.
In some time, we'll see these products making their way to our troops.

I am assuming this is a annual budget..

Don't think they can buy whatever they want, obviously items have to be from pre-approved DGQA list of equipment.
Local Manufacturers need not go to area commanders for demos and stuff, what area commander can do is they can raise the tender directly from a pre-approved list of vendors for a specific equipment. Like in the recent NVD for INSAS, all 6 vendors were specified in the tender itself. who ever becomes L1 gets the deal.

No change in rank structure, status of armed forces personnel: Defence Ministry

NEW DELHI: The Defence Ministry on Thursday said there has been no down-gradation or any change in the existing equivalence of the service ranks vis-a-vis their civilian counterparts.

There have been reports in the media claiming that the government has issued a new order lowering the status of military officers with respect to their civilian counterparts in the Armed Forces headquarters.

These reports, quoting a letter dated October 18, 2016 issued by the Ministry of Defence, "are erroneously stating that the equivalence has been disturbed and status of Service officers has been downgraded", a statement by the Defence Ministry said.

It is clarified that there has been no down-gradation or any change in the existing equivalence of the Service ranks whatsoever, it said.

The existing functional equivalence as clarified in 1991 and further reiterated in 1992, 2000, 2004 and 2005 has only been re-affirmed.
It is further clarified that the present reiteration of rank equivalence, is only for matters of assigning duties and functional responsibilities as is already existing in different offices of the respective Service HQrs of the Army, Navy and Air Force having component of Service personnel as well as civilian officers.

"It has no bearing on civilian employees outside these offices of the Service HQrs. It is reiterated that there is no change in the rank structure or the status of the Armed Forces personnel," the Ministry said.
