Father, son fly together, celebrating three generations in IAF
An Indian Air Force (IAF) AN-32 aircraft which took off from air force station Vadodara today, proceeded to create history of sorts, as it wasflown by a father and sonteam of IAF pilots.
The sortie was flown by Air Commodore R S Sodhi, who is Air Officer Commanding at Air Force Station Vadodara and his son Flight Lieutenant Angad Singh Sodhi, who is presently posted to Squadron 12, based at air force station Agra.
Three generations of the Chandigarh-based Sodhis have served in the IAF, beginning with Flight Lieutenant Angad Singh Sodhi's grandfather, 85-year-old retired Wing Commander Bhupender Singh Sodhi, who had joined the IAF's administration and legal branch, in November 1949.
Both his sons too chose to join the IAF, as his elder son Air Commodore P S Sodhi joined IAF as a medical officer and is presently commanding the 5 Air Force Hospital at Jorhat.
His younger son is Air Commodore R S Sodhi, who was commissioned in June 1979 as a fighter pilot and went on to achieve today's feat, when he flew a sortie with his son Flight Lieutenant Angad Singh Sodhi, who joinedthe IAF as a pilot in June 2010.
Air Commodore R S Sodhi has a total of 3,500 flying hours on various aircraft and he is an alumnus of the Defence Service Staff College and College of Defence Management. He has been awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal by the President in recognition of his distinguished service of high order.
Talking to reporters after flying with his son, Air Commodore R S Sodhi said"Youth should should be motivated to join the IAF".
His unmarried son Flight Lieutenant Angad Singh Sodhi, posted to Squadron 12 at air force station Agra said, "I will encourage my son to join the IAF after I get married". He said he drew this inspiration from his father and would want his son to maintain this tradition.
His grandfather, retired Wing Commander Bhupender Singh said, "I am proud of my son and grandson for joining the IAF".

Army, IAF officials meet Arunachal CM
Itanagar: Top officials of the Army and Air Force (IAF) on Monday met Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and discussed core issues related to the activities of the armed forces in the state.
While Shillong based Eastern Air Command Air Vice Marshal Praveen Bhatt discussed issues related to DM (Designated Marskman) range of the IAF and other activities in the frontier state, Tezpur based 4 Corp GoC Lt Gen C A Krishnan took up the issues of land requisition and road communication in the border state for Army activities, official sources said.
Assuring cooperation from thestate government for Army and IAF activities in the state,Tuki reiterated his appeal for taking into confidence the local populace wherever the Indian Armed Force operated or were based.
Taking note of the raising of the second battalion of Arunachal Scouts, he requested the Army to recruit as many local youths as possible.
Pointing out that local youths hardly make headway in qualifying for the recruitment tests, Tuki sought help from the Army as well as the IAF to conduct pre-recruitment training camps so that more locals were equipped to qualify.
The Air Vice Marshall informedthe CM that during recruitmentfor running of advanced landing grounds (ALGs) in the state, only eligible local youths would be preferred.
Meanwhile, Tuki expressed his gratitude to Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh for his assurance to establish a Sainik School in Arunachal Pradesh during their last meeting at New Delhi.
He assured to provide a suitable plot of land, possibly within the vicinity of the state capital, for establishment of the same.
On the issue of land acquisition for the army, Tuki asked the Chief Secretary to call a meeting of all deputy commissioners concerned and give a timeline for completion of the processes so that projects were implemented immediately without any hindrance, sources added.

Indian Selection of Future Targeting Pod in 2013

India has floated a tender for the delivery of more than 100 advanced targeting pods for its strike fighters, Two systems are under consideration – the French Damocles pod, already employed on Mirage 2000 and Rafale, offered by Thales of France, that has teamed with Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) for this program, and the Israeli Litening, the latest version of the targeting pod developed by RAFAEL. According to company officials, the Litening pods being offered are superior in technological terms. RAFAEL and Lockheed Martin are often competing targeting pod procurements worldwide as their products – Litening and Sniper are similar in capabilities and performance. In India, however, the US company remained out of the competition for unexplained reasons.

India is already operating previous generations of Litening on its fighter planes and RAFAEL has sourced Indian subcontractor significant contracts for the supply of subsystems and services for these products.

Both companies have passed the technical selection and are expected to demonstrate their pods in upcoming months. Selection of the Lowest Bidder (L1) will follow later this year (2013).

While the teaming Thales has struck with BEL positions it as a favorite supplier for MMRCA and Mirage 2000 upgrades, the advantages of commonality with existing and new targeting pods is not ignored by the IAF, even if it is not part of the parameters to be considered for the selection. Thales recently announced it is embarking on an improvement of its Damocles pod, a step likely to assist its product offering in India as well.

According to RAFAEL, the Litening pods deployed with the IAF could be upgraded to the same level as the new pods, bringing the total inventory of targeting pods to more than 200, all would be interchangeable between all strike aircraft configured to carry targeting pods. These aircraft could also carry our recce missions, using the RECCELITE pod that has recently become operational with the IAF.

66% of IAF contracts went to Indian companies: Air Chief

The transformation process of the Indian Air Force into a multi spectrum force has in the last five years seen aerospace contracts worth Rs 1.52 lakh crore handed out to companies, including Rs 84,000 crore to indigenous companies, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne said at the opening of the plenary session of Aero India seminar.

"In the 11th plan itself the IAF signed 325 capital contracts and the volume of these contracts was Rs 1.52 lakh crore which in dollar terms works out to $ 28.5 billion. Interestingly enough, about $ 15.5 billion of this amount translated into 217 contracts or Rs 84,000 crore that went to Indian companies. This is something people find hard to believe. So, 66 per cent of the volume of contracts that the IAF signed was with our indigenous industries,'' he said. "We have plans for going in for 350- 400 aircraft in the 12th plan...In our view what is going to propel us forward in order to make the IAF a reckonable military power is that we have to stop importing and start doing things more indigenously," he said.

Negotiations between India and Israel Underway to Proceed with Aerostats Program

India and Israel are negotiating a follow-on delivery of four aerostat systems, augmenting the first delivery of aerostats that has already been deployed along India's north-eastern border. Both India and Pakistan are deploying aerostat-borne radars along their border to tighten control over this sensitive area.

RAFAEL, the prime contractor for these aerostat systems has delivered 71 meter aerostat systems to India, this program is currently moving toward completion, with follow-on deliveries of additional four units under discussion. These aerostats carry a variety of sensors, including EL/M-2083 air surveillance radars provided by IAI Elta Systems, communications intelligence (COMINT) and Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) payloads providing persistent, all-weather wide-area coverage of sensitive border areas, particularly covering sectors where land-based radars offer limited coverage, due to the topography or other limiting factors. At that altitude, a large aerostat can carry a two ton payload. The cable also supplies power, which means the blimp can stay up for about 30 days at a time before it has to be brought down for maintenance on its radars. Often, two radars are carried. One is a surveillance radar, the other is a precision track and illumination radar (PTIR). The surveillance radar provides long-range coverage (about 500 kilometers for the EL/M-2083), while the PTIR, which is a steerable system capable of tracking multiple targets, can focus in on items of interest.

These 71 meter aerostats are built by US Aerostat specialist TCOM, and are among the largest currently available. India is expected to buy additional aerostats, and, in fact, is already considering future procurement of additional systems of various classes, as part of an international tender. RAFAEL is expected to be one of the companies to be invited to participate, pitted against competitors from Israel, USA and Europe. Domestic competitors could also appear for smaller aerostat platforms, although the indigenous Indian aerostat (Akashdeep) is not expected to be available in the high volume class for years to come.

Operating an aerostat system is a complex task, maintaining several tons of payload suspended in an aerostat, keeping it in position even in high winds, even the 20,000 foot long tether connecting the aerostat to the ground and supplying power weighs several tons.
