IAF chief Arup Raha asks
officers for better absorption
of new equipment

NEW DELHI: Against the backdrop of the crash of a newly- acquired C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft, IAF chief Arup Raha today asked the officers and personnel to work for "better absorption of modern equipment". "He urged everyone to keep abreast with modern developments and technologies for smooth transition and better absorption of modern equipment," the IAF said in a release. The IAF chief was addressing the inaugural function of the Commanders' Conference at the Eastern Command of the force in Shillong. The IAF recently lost its most modern aircraft C-130J Super Hercules in a crash near Gwalior in which five personnel including four pilots were killed. It has not yet been able to find the reason behind the crash even after receiving the data from the Black Box of the aircraft from the American original equipment manufacturer Lockheed Martin. At the commanders' conference, the IAF chief brought out the vital role of the NE region and gave an insight into future infrastructure development plans under Easter Air Command. Raha along with his wife had visited the Chhabua air base in Assam close to China border and had flown in the frontline Su-30MKI combat aircraft.

Indigenious Attack helicopter

China has completed Z-19 Attack helicopter and our LCH is nowwhere in the picture ...

During Gulf war it became quite clear importance of attck helicopters ....

we have still not finalisied Apache Helicopters

our Mi-35 are old ...

Dhruv Wsi is still trying different types of ammos..

LCH was supposed to give our avaition a very strong hand but it seems it will take some more years to get into active service....

Re: Indigenious Attack helicopter

The development of LCH is progressing well. According to Tamil mani LCH is going to be one of the best product of HAL.

The weapons, EW suite, sensors and other technologies are being developed on RUDRA after successful tests these technologies can be quickly integrated on to LCH.

In a bid to cut costs and boost its efficiency, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning to go in for massive indigenisation and experts feel if indigenisation becomes a policy, then 70 to 80 per cent of defence products will be indigenised in the next decade.

The IAF has already tied up with MRF in this venture and the tyre manufacturer has already made tyres for the Air Force's Sukhoi 30 range of aircraft. Till now, the tyres of IAF aircraft are being procured from abroad at a high cost. "Usually, IAF spends `1 lakh to buy a tyre from abroad but now we are offering them better quality at an affordable cost — 35 to 40 per cent lower that what they are purchasing at now. We are offering each tyre at a cost of `56,000," said MRF Chairman and Managing Director, K M Mammen.

The tyres are produced at the company's manufacturing facility situated in Medak, Hyderabad. Mammen, Air Vice Marshal J K Singh and Dr K Tamil Mani, DRDO Director General (Aero) launched the tyre range called 'Aero Muscle.

Mammen felt that the government should follow an indigenisation policy rather than be dependent on imports. "If indigenisation becomes a policy then 70 to 80 per cent of defence products will be indigenised in the next 10 years," he said.

MRF took up the next project of the main wheel tyres for the Sukhoi 30 MKI in 2008. This project was anchored by CEMILAC (the certifying authority for Military aviation), RCMA (Nasik), DGAQA, IAF and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

MRF Ltd Executive Vice-President Marketing Koshy Varghese said that MRF is using the back-up facility. "We are executing an order which we got in 2013 from the IAF. 50 per cent of the order which is substantial is being executed. The remaining 50 per cent is on the way," he said.

Intrestingy, MRF has already set its sights on manufacturig tyres for MIGs. There are various projects but MIG is the immediate thing, said Koshy.Ever-increasing costs of imports and dependence on foreign vendors has resulted in IAF to take a decision on indigenisation. Currently, it is believed the Indian air force operates more than 20 different types of aircraft and several radars, other support systems and weapons.

Why is Indian Airforce is not accepting Tejas mk1 completely ?

Hi All
Tejas is an Indian fighter aircraft which is no less than any of the leading aircrafts in the world today, but I see a little doubt in the minds of decision makers towards it ... Why? Why spending twice thrice the cost of new Tejas MK1 in upgrading old aircrafts ?
Why not get the new aircrafts and build confidence in it?
They have placed very small order just for the sake of it..... why not fully trusting TEJAS

Perhaps mkIII would be even better and India can wait till 2070 when the IAF Squadron would be down to 5.

Re: Why is Indian Airforce is not accepting Tejas mk1 completely ?

Tejas MK1 fulfills all the requirements made by Airforce...
Improvements and developments in the field of aerospace are endless...
Technology changes in a very short time but development takes its own time does that mean we will always be relying on foreign aircrafts? and will side line our own product which has a very large potential....
We have to strengthen our own base..and that can only b done by showing faith in them..

Which is same as if we were in 1998 and wait for Win7 to be launched but refuse to use Win98.
