Sorry to barge in!

I find them useful in protecting artillery and other assets near the border in the event of full fledged war against enemy's artillery, rocket and missile barrage against our positions!
Bro there is no need to be sorry . Any Idea bout how many of these systems needed to protect even Indo Pakistan boundry ?

IMHO, it will depend on how many new 155mm guns we buy, over and above the number of positions IA thinks it requires for shelling enemy positions and support ground troops in a future warfare scenario.

Real threat for us will be chinese and Pakistanis missiles. IMHO we should concentrate more on missile defence rather than mortar shells and small rockets. We better use this money to buy some artillery .

We are already in the process of buying new art., missiles will never be used to hit art. positions and other ground troop positions! Its always Shelling or air attacks near the border!

Thats why we should try to build some good and strong bunkers in border areas . Given cost involved in these systems and can be easily rendered useless if enemy concentrate its firepower at one location. It might be used to give limited protection to one or two location and definitely cannot be used in huge numbers . May be few experts will be able to put more light on its use.

Artillery is not used from bunkers and for troops when being amassed for moving forward will render bunkers useless. Always In a war scenario new bases and makeshift positions are created near the border!

Rafael Confirms Offer of Iron Dome, David's Sling to Indian Armed Forces

Mr. Lova Drori, Executive Vice President of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has confirmed in an interview to India Defence that the Israeli defense major has offered two of its most advanced defensive weapon systems -- Iron Dome and David's Sling -- to the Indian Armed Forces.

"We have lot of products that would interest Indian armed forces and we are talking to them about that, but we can't share more specific details about those products or programs. All I can share is that we are offering Iron Dome and David's Sling to the Indian armed forces."

-- Mr. Lova Drori, Executive Vice President, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems - November 2010 Interview with Mr. Lova Drori, Executive Vice President, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems

Iron Dome is a mobile air defense system in development by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems designed to intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells. The system is being created as a defensive countermeasure to the rocket threat against Israel's civilian population on its northern and southern border, and is expected to be deployed by the first quarter of 2011. It is designed to intercept very short-range threats up to 40 kilometers in all-weather situations.

David's Sling, also sometimes called Magic Wand, is an Israel Defense Forces military system being jointly developed by the Israeli defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the American defense contractor Raytheon, designed to intercept medium-to-long range rockets and slower-flying cruise missiles, such as those possessed by Hezbollah, fired at ranges from 40 km to 300 km

Defending artilary firing itself is a big advantage.pak has advantage in artilary because our guns are very old. So with iron dom we can counter that advantage of pak.

Iron dome is not very cheap system that can be extensively used . If Artillery fire is concentrated in a single are it will not be easy for Iron dome to protect it completely. It can be easily be overpowered. Given cost constraints it cannot be used in very high numbers.
We should concentrate more on Fire finding radars and taking out Their Artillery instead of planning to defend from Artillery.Attack is best form of defence IMHO .

Iron Dome..

Iron Dome..

Iron Dome system designed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to intercept short-range missiles and rockets, in exchange for which it is supposed to receive several Iron Dome systems to deploy on its territory.
not for the protection of Sderot and the southern communities in Israel that suffered from Qassam rocket attacks and mortar fire for seven years and are still suffering (though Iron Dome is not capable of intercepting mortar shells).

Israeli media have previously hinted at this, but the Defense Ministry has vehemently denied it.
The suspicions were bolstered by the fact that after the system was developed and one battery had been deployed as an Israel Defense Forces base, it turned out that the Defense Ministry had no budget for additional batteries. In that case, why was there a need to develop a system for which there is no budget and which the IDF does not intend to deploy?

One battery, whose production cost is about $50 million, has already been deployed at a base in the south of the country, but so far has not been readied for operational purposes and has not yet been activated.
The anti-aircraft division of the Israel Air Force, which is responsible for operating Iron Dome, is training teams at a base in the north.
They will be operating the system in Israel, with the aim of intercepting Qassam and Katyusha rockets up to a distance of 40 kilometers.

Vulcan-Phalanx: cheaper and more accessible

Intelligence Online also repeats an argument published in recent years in Israel to the effect that if the Defense Ministry had really wanted to protect the residents of the south quickly and cheaply, it could have acquired a cheaper and more accessible defense system than Iron Dome: the batteries of the Vulcan-Phalanx cannon system manufactured by Raytheon.
The land-based version of the batteries, called Centurion, are deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq, where they are used to protect American and NATO forces.
Although Defense Minister Ehud Barak has told Haaretz several times that Israel will acquire the Vulcan-Phalanx system, that has yet to happen.
In other words, the Defense Ministry may have given Rafael a development budget as a way of positioning the project as an Israeli military system that is ostensibly being used by the IDF but is really aimed at improving Israel's chances of selling it to Singapore and other countries.

I don't see that IA or IAF need such system, What we need is long range and medium range SAMs, Which we are already making with Israel..

Yes it's not economical to defend each artilary shell with a iron dom, but we still can protect our important instalations and areas, may be our artilary guns and operators also.

First of all we need to define what kind of installations are Important and how many of them are under Artillery range from Pakistan. Indian government is not a fool to build strategic buildings near the border.

I personally feel the acquisition of Iron Dome represents a shift in Indian planning. Having establish conventional superiority, defense planner anticipate unconventional attacks. Faced with overwhelming conventional superiority your smaller neighbors may resort to unconventional means in the event of war.We all saw the mayhem wrought on by a handful of terrorist on 11/26, now imagine the devastation a much larger group on a similar mission can cause. The scenario I describe is not different from what happened in Kargil, recall Pakistani army regulars occupying strategic mountain peaks in civilian clothing. Iron Dome is designed to be an effective area defense system, versatile enough to be employed in defense of military installations or civilian infrastructure. Military installations such as bases in hostile territory need protection from cheap RPG's, a system like Iron Dome will be useful.

India in talks to buy Iron Dome, David's Sling - Israel Business, Ynetnews

Procurement of David's Sling or the Iron Dome would be a "pleasure". "Defense News" reports that India is in talks to buy Israel's ground-based rocket and missile interceptor systems Iron Dome and David's Sling.

David's Sling, designed to intercept medium-range missiles (70-240 kilometers range), is being developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. and Raytheon Company.

Indian Ministry of Defense sources told "Defense News" negotiations between the Israeli and Indian governments on a deal for David's Sling had been going on for more than six months.

The sources added that Israel was open to sales of David's Sling, but that it would not transfer the system's technology as part of a deal.

An Indian Ministry of Defense official said that neither its aging Russian-built air defense systems nor the PAD system can serve as the country' sole line of defense against potential missile threats from Pakistan or China.

He said that the procurement of David's Sling or the Iron Dome would be a "pleasure".

What do you mean it would be a pleasure unless off course you mean the deal will come with some good amount of $$$ for personal use. Yeah that indeed would be a pleasure!!

as if we are facing daily rocket attacks like israel. they are very very expensive. more over buying def equipment is just like buying car, it comes with the future running cost and maintenance cost. these steps will choke the efforts to buy newer equipment in future as the money allotted will go for repairs and upkeep and situation just like bofor gun, mig-21 and submarine fleet will happen again in coming 2-3 decades.
capability to run the platforms in the best possible manner is a vital thing but unfortunately most ignored one also in indian context
