AHMEDABAD: After ridding high on superbikes, the state police are all set to fly high. Senior police officials say they have worked out a proposal to procure five helicopters and one small aircraft as part of the police modernization project.

Once the proposal is accepted by the government, Gujarat police will be able to procure the helicopters and the aircraft very soon. Sources from the Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar said the state police had formed a committee to study the specifications for the helicopter and the aircraft. "The state police will get five single-engine helicopters and a small aircraft. The committee is studying the specifications, price and models," said a senior police official. The helicopter would play an important role in emergency situations for surveillance as well as operational functions. "In similar situations, the aircraft would be used to reach distant places by the police," said police officials.

Police officials said the helicopter and the aircraft could also be used in case of natural calamities. "We can shift people from affected areas till help from disaster management agencies arrives," added police officials.

Soon, the state cops will get 20 superbikes to be sued for chasing criminals and escort service. "Seven of these bikes — with engine displacement ranging from 750cc to 1000cc — are likely to procured before Vibrant Gujarat Summit," said senior police officials.

Bihar police to purchase chopper for anti-Red ops
Patna: The anti-Maoist operations in state are set to be augmented with the Bihar police planning to purchase a chopper for the use of security personnel. The chopper will help reduce time in providing air support to security forces carrying out combing operations in Maoist-hit areas.

ADG (law and order) Alok Raj said modalities for purchase of the chopper were being finalised. "We have decided to borrow one of the three choppers the Centre has provided to Jharkhand till we get our own," the ADG added.

"Technical issues like recruitment of pilot, hangar, maintenance and budget are being discussed before the purchase of the chopper. It will be stationed at Gaya hangar. The helicopter will also be helpful for police personnel on law and order duty," the ADG said.

He added that the chopper will drop commandos in Maoist-dominated areas, especially when an encounter takes place. "It will also be used to airlift injured jawans and shift them to hospitals. Security officials can use the chopper to reach the trouble spots during important operations," he said.

"Gaya hangar has been chosen to station the chopper because anti-Maoist operations are mainly conducted in southern part of the state. Dense forest and hilly terrain make it difficult for security personnel to take quick action," the ADG said.We can't land the chopper everywhere from security point of view. In Chhattisgarh, the ultras also target choppers used by security personnel. Construction of helipad in police lines and CRPF camps will ensure safe landing of the chopper," the ADG added.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar had recently said all police lines in the state will be equipped with helipads.

Delhi Police proposes air patrols to meet new challenges
A month after Home Minister Rajnath Singh met the police brass and discussed modernisation of the force to meet new law and order challenges, the Delhi Police has moved a proposal to hire Pawan Hans helicopters for air patrols over the city.

On July 16, a month after Singh visited the police headquarters, a letter was circulated among eight senior officers, seeking suggestions on how best can helicopters be put to use.

The letter, forwarded by a Special Commissioner, mentions Commissioner B S Bassi’s remarks on the use of helicopters by police.

“If we use (the helicopters) for traffic, an intelligent assessment be made about the average usage per day so that a cheaper option can be identified. Also visualise usage for law and order and crime prevention duties. Also how it will enhance women’s safety,” Bassi notes in the letter circulated among Joint Commissioners.

Sources said the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked for an estimate of the cost that will be incurred and the number of helicopters the force will need.

Senior officers, in their discussions with Pawan Hans, mentioned that at least two helicopters will be needed, the sources said.

The final proposal for the helicopter patrol is likely to be submitted this week.

After visiting the police headquarters on June 16, Rajnath Singh told reporters that he had a discussion with senior officers on how the force could be modernised to tackle law and order problems.

In a police PowerPoint presentation, prepared after the new government took charge at the Centre, hiring of helicopters was one of the highlights.

“We need helicopters for not just law and order duty but also to give us an advantage from the sky in the eventuality of an attack. Monitoring traffic is going to be very easy. To start with, two helicopters should be enough, one each for law-and-order and traffic. We are submitting exact details to the MHA. We hope it will get cleared soon,” a senior officer said.
