India is set to renew its pitch for universal nuclear disarmament at a conference here Tuesday, an idea first thrown up by the late Rajiv Gandhi.

External Affairs Minister SM Krishna will inaugurate the National Outreach Conference on Global Nuclear Disarmament, an initiative of the prime minister's informal group on global disarmament chaired by Mani Shankar Aiyar of the Congress.

The conference, organised by the Indian Council of World Affairs and supported by the external affairs ministry, is being held to commemorate the 68th birth anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Under what conditions would India give up its nuclear arms?

Is this a case of left hand not knowing what right hand is doing in GOI?

What does your post even mean? What are you trying to say? How is the phrase 'global nuclear disarmament' so difficult to understand?

It is a consistent view of India right from the beginning. It stands for a universal disarmament of nuclear weapons. As Lurker pointed out, India will give up nukes when all agree to give up nukes.

If you check the history of nuke development, US developed nukes first followed by Britain. Then USSR developed nukes to counter US & Britain. Then France developed nukes to counter USSR. Then China developed nukes to counter Russia. Then India developed nukes to counter China. Then Pakistan developed nukes to counter India and so on and so forth. If we have to undo all of this, then disarmament should happen concomitantly.

I mean to ask, is this a legitimate effort by the GOI? How does the Indian military establishment view such efforts?

External Affairs Minister (how important is he?)...Outreach...informal group...celebrating a birthday...blah de blah... All sounds meaningless to me.

Some nuclear powers were omitted.
Nuclear proliferation is a term now used to describe the spread of nuclear weapons, fissile material, and weapons-applicable nuclear technology and information, to nations which are not recognized as "Nuclear Weapon States" by the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons, also known as the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty or NPT.

Proliferation has been opposed by many nations with and without nuclear weapons, the governments of which fear that more countries with nuclear weapons may increase the possibility of nuclear warfare (up to and including the so-called "countervalue" targeting of civilians with nuclear weapons), de-stabilize international or regional relations, or infringe upon the national sovereignty of states.

Four countries besides the five recognized Nuclear Weapons States have acquired, or are presumed to have acquired, nuclear weapons: India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel. None of these four is a party to the NPT, although North Korea acceded to the NPT in 1985, then withdrew in 2003 and conducted announced nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009. One critique of the NPT is that it is discriminatory in recognizing as nuclear weapon states only those countries that tested nuclear weapons before 1968 and requiring all other states joining the treaty to forswear nuclear weapons.

This statement I think was made to convince Australians to sell uranium to India.

Its a weapon which can kill the attacker, indirectly through side-effects. And if chain reaction of nations attacking their enemies start, it will definitely destroy all living beings except cockroaches.
