India to help Sri Lankan army to build capacities - Hindustan Times

India has agreed to help the Sri Lankan Army in its capacity building by opening up more seats for its officers and men in its training academies and military colleges, apart from sharing experiences in counter-insurgency operations. The agreements were arrived at during the first
structured army-to-army talks that ended on Friday, an Indian Army officer said.

Apart from deciding to enhance the scope and number of training courses for Sri Lankan officers and men, the Indian Army will also share its experience and organisational structure for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

For the talks, Sri Lanka had sent a five-member delegation led by its military secretary, Major General HCP Goonetilleke. India was represented by the army's Additional Director General for International Cooperation, Major General I.P. Singh.

The two sides will also send their military instructors to each other's military academies. Sri Lankan, in particular, needed instructors in adventure sports and English language, which India agreed to provide, they said.

The Goonetilleke-led delegation also met Indian Army chief General V.K. Singh during the visit.

In the inaugural army-to-army staff talks, which began Wednesday, the two sides also shared their expertise in battle concepts and doctrines, particularly in tackling insurgency.

While Sri Lanka successfully ended its three-decade long civil war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) two years ago, India is battling insurgents in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeastern states.

The Sri Lankan delegation will return to Colombo on Saturday.

Again, our government continues to assist those violent and aggressive entities that continue killing our countrymen and threaten the sovereignty of our land. What a waste of Indian resources.

do we have another option
hmm,
same argument the government uses when people question them about talking with Pakistan.

Ofcourse there are other options, we just choose to not do anything, and then claim is no other option.

how about not helping them kill our own citizen, that would be a good start, SL navy has been involved in attacks on Indian fishermen and India gives the more boats, some geopolitics this is.

'Geopolitics' is probably the most abused word as far as Indian foreign policy is concerned, every time the government surrenders the national interest, the reason given is geopolitics.

SL has been indirectly saying over and over that "we will go to the Chinese". Let them, because of there is a conflict because of this, even SL will be bombed to stone age. They know this and they won't let anything militaristic develop in their tiny cr@p country. Those who kill our people in our territorial waters don't deserve our assistance.

Tomorrow they may demand some more goodies and favors using the same Chinese, Pakistani trick.
This is more like giving in to blackmail than geo politics and diplomacy.

India should develop better ties with Sri Lanka, but at the same time make sure Indian citizens are not harmed or killed by the same people.
What has the Govt done to address the issue of Indian fishermen being killed by their Navy?

Indians would not have any problem with our country helping the Sri Lankans better their military capability as long as the Sri Lankans do not kill Indian Citizens atleast in Indian or International waters.
