Going by the recent developments in Gilgit, should India mount an operation like Kargil done by Pakistan against India to get a strategic hold of the national highway? By doing so, India has to keep in mind that the operation should take it close to overlooking the Karkoram Highway that is now being used by China to its advantage.

Siachen glacier already gives India an advantage, but if we can get hold of more peaks on the other side of line of control that gives us a choke hold on the KH, it would pay us rich dividends. India did it once in Siachen, i think its time for another such daring operation.

Like amitabh said in the movie Lakshya.. "yeh Indian Army hai. Hum Dushmani main bhi sharafat dhikatay hain."

Army will not do anything against the government's wishes.

There is no point going for a kargil like situation unless we have specific goals and the ability to withstand international pressure and be ready for escalation into full-scale war by Pakistan. I don't think current govt. is not dispensed towards such ideas.

Well before we do that we must settle a long and outstanding issue with Pakistan..that of water sharing. It is time to release half of water stored in our dams in J & K and feed the rivers flowing into Pakistan.Lets make a sincere contribution and let Pakistan know that we are indeed reasonable in understanding their problems. This must be done on urgent basis preferably in the next few days.

Ok let us take it at a level of discussing operational possibilities rather than crib about the govt decision and the general negatives we have about our govt.

IA proved its ability to transport most of its strike forces on the front within time..
IA in Kashmir is at a level that the force can be transformed for Attack within Hours..

All Wars need diversions and some time Diversion are attacks..
PA cannot guard all possible openings but IA can..

I would rather see India arming Murri and Bugti tribes to teeth with latest kalashnikovs and RPGs and open a training camp for them in IRAN/Afghanistan...Rest assured we will not need to do any Kargil...

Why use own human resources to go each time on site..Just outsource the job..

Actually good Idea, but then, Pakistan is burning as it is, without our help! :p

And Yeah, about Kargil like operation! hmmmm It will be a full scale war in no time! The Pak Army wont sit idle and let us have the peaks, just like we didnt sit idle when Kargil was infiltrated! They will pour everything over that area to evict us, and then it will be a full scale war on all sectors! It will be a perfect situation for Pakistan to focus on India and gather around the Taliban and stop their infighting.

I say, we keep quiet, and maintain the status quo! Pakistan will take care of itself! :)

Considering that Kargil was an all out disaster for Pakistan, and a rallying point for India, I hope India doesn't give a Pakistan its Kargil.

When India does a Kargil, it ends up more like Siachen ;)

India can't do a Kargil. In most border disputes, the smaller belligerent stands at a diplomatic advantage, unless of course the larger belligerent is a veto power.

If India covertly or overtly violates Pakistan-administered territory, apart from the obvious military action from Pakistan, it will be facing a Pakistan Army that is cushioned by China and/or US. Given India's size, it can probably never enjoy that geopolitical cushion.

I would rather see Balochistan as a separate nation than PoK joining India..or, I just put Balochistan higher in my priority list...
Just imagine..Pakistan without the reserves of Balochistan and Gwadar..

India should give Pakistan its Kargil

    For:
    • India needs to be worried about the PLA getting a stranglehold on Gilgit-Baltistan region, whcih is Indian territory.
    • India needs to open a land access to Afghanistan.
    • This will open India's doors to the Former Soviet Central Asian Republics. The result will be increased trade and prosperity.
    • Chinese access to Pakistani ports will be cut off, which is required, because it is China, not Pakistan, who is our biggest rival.
    • The state of Jammu and Kashmir will be united. This will satisfy a lot of voices, if not all, in J&K itself.
    • It would be possible to realise a train link from Delhi to Moscow. The Russian Federation will always support it because they have been, since ages, looking for a warm-water port in the India Ocean.

    Against:
    • Pakistan is reeling from the effects of flood with more than a quarter of Pakistan under water. Even if the flood waters recede, the after effects will stay for some time.
    • Due to proliferation of private news channels, moderate and pacifist voices in Pakistan (and outside) are getting louder. People are talking of peace. Going to war will only show these people (Hasan Nisar, Pervez Hoodbhoy, Nazir Naji, Tarek Fatah, Javed Chaundry, Asghar Khan, and Najam Sethi) in a bad light.
    • War will put undue pressure on India and it's economy.
    • It will earn India a bad name.
    • Pakistan has many rogue elements within it. They will keep attacking and killing each other without any Indian intervention.
    • Possibility of a Nuclear War.

India lacks the political will do the same. If we enter there, pakistan wont dare to attack india and escalate it into a full scale war, but we dont, best example is Kargil, Tiger Hills

What Advantage India has after over taking Siachen is still debatable. Siachen as a passage into china is over hyped.

As far as stretching near or over KKH is concerned then India has to cross the LOC near IB and into so called Azzad Kashmir. Furthermore China is not going to use KKH as a passage to transport logistics into Pakistan in case of war. But Pakistan will use KKH to supply its northern areas, Gilgit and Balistan. China may come only 1/3 down into KKH well supplied via Kunjerab Pass/kaxgar and since they are now getting into Gilgit Balistan therefore it will be again difficult for us to entrench into POK to secure KKH. KKH is of less significance if India wants to conduct a Kargil like offence to capture few high peak posts to have an eye over KKH. If one look at KKH road map then it is prety far away from Indian army's reach and near to IB for Pakistan to retain back.

Its better for India to capture Gilgit and Balistan and important roads over north of kargil range/peaks if we seriously wants to have an advantage of this current situation. At the end of the day if we have to weigh any offence that may lead to full scale war then why not we should capture an area which we have moral obligation to do so. Pakistanis are serial offenders and i would like to know what was GoI's response when shaksgam valley was awarded to china. Its all about area we control, not roads if Chinese are in POK.

Getting back PoK from Pakistan will only be possible (with least resistance) when India and Pakistan go for a war or when Pakistan balkanizes. PoK is a very strategic piece of land for Pakistan, China and India. All of these powers will use all resources to keep PoK within their control.

At the operational level we need at least 2-3 additional mountain divisions in addition to the divisions we have given the treacherous terrain of PoK. We also need para-troops to be dropped off at strategic positions to cut-off the link between PRC and Pakistan and then proceed with occupying the Pakistani army posts and Karakorum highway and also connect to these posts logistically, which will not be an easy job. All this is possible only when Pakistani Army and Pakistani Air Force are spread thin and will be possible only in the event of full-scale war between India and Pakistan or balkanization of Pakistan. Under peaceful conditions, Pak can match soldier for soldier against India if it will ever tries to gain back PoK.

I'm not factoring political will. I'm talking about a hypothetical scenario where political will is not of consequence.
