Ghataks are elite infantry much like the Rangers and technically every Indian army officer is a Ghatak. Every officer has until the age of 30 to complete Ghatak training course.

For some reason Ghataks' perception of being a special force has stuck on. Maybe its the macho name :hat:

Ghatak is name of the CO's quick reaction team in the battalion. These are the fittest, younger profile, handpicked troops of the unit. It is a platoon sized formation. Not even a company strong.

I will also count President's Body Guards as a special force as well. Though very small they have an armored troop to act as pathfinders for the 50th Ind. Parachute Brigade.

SG's existence is not recognised by the GoI and both SFF and SG come under the ambit of the R&AW.

In Western lexicon, Ghataks would be described as "Special operations capable" infantry

The Ghataks are more than just the QRT/QRF of the infantry battalions although that is what can be used for. They are the "shock troops" of the battalion provided better equipment and advanced (and specialised) training, that offers the Btn commander a greater degree of options for when planning specific missions.

+ the PBG is a specialised force (as are all pathfinders) but, again, not SFs.

Ghataks aren't Special Forces.

There are only 3 true Special Forces in India as recognised by the MoD/GoI- PARA (SF), Garuds and MARCOs.

All others are specialised forces but NOT SFs.
How MARCOs compare with British SAS or US Navy SEALs ?
