India planning acquisition of advanced Russian air defence missile system

In what could be a game-changing arms acquisition, India is planning to acquire the new-generation Russian S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems that can destroy incoming hostile aircraft, stealth fighters, missiles and drones at ranges of up to 400-km.

Sources say the defence acquisitions council (DAC), chaired by Manohar Parrikar, will "soon" take up the proposal moved by the IAF to purchase around a dozen S-400 long-range systems from Russia.

The project is at an initial stage at present. But it will be a government-to-government contract when it is finalized, with the S-400 systems being inducted over several years," said a defence ministry source.

The procurement proposal comes ahead of Parrikar's impending visit to Russia, which will be followed by the Modi-Putin summit in Moscow in December. It also comes around a year after China sealed a $3 billion deal with Russia for acquisition of six S-400 batteries.

China is slated to get the S-400 batteries, which is designated `SA-21 Growler' by NATO and rivals the anti-ballistic missile capabilities of the US Patriot PAC-3 system, from 2017 onwards.

Countries locked in territorial disputes with China in the East and South China Seas, ranging from Japan and Taiwan to Vietnam and the Philippines, are all worried at the prospect of the People's Liberation Army getting such a force-multiplier to dominate the airspace. India obviously is also wary of China acquiring such a military capability, even if it is defensive in nature, since it can make all the difference during a conflict.

The S-400 basically has three kinds of missiles, with different capabilities, that can fly at supersonic and hypersonic speeds to intercept all kinds of targets at ranges from 120 to 400-km. Russian experts even proclaim the S-400 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system can "radar lock and shoot down" stealth fifth-generation fighters like the American F-35 jets.

India, on its part, is now belatedly trying to plug the gaping holes in its airspace surveillance and defence network with progressive induction of a wide array of sensors and weapons.

With both IAF, tasked with the country's air defence, and Army saddled with increasingly obsolete air defence weapons, the ongoing induction of the indigenous 25-km range Akash area defence system has come as a major relief for them.

Induction of the Israeli Spyder low-level quick-reaction missile systems, with a 15-km range, is now planned from 2016-2017 onwards. The project was stuck since the Tatra trucks -- on which the missile systems were to be mounted - had got enmeshed in corruption scandals. The contract was recently amended to replace the Tatra trucks with Tata trucks.

Deliveries of the medium-range SAM systems jointly developed by Israeli Aerospace Industries and DRDO, with an interception range of 70-km, will also begin from 2016-2017.

Along with induction of these weapons, IAF is also now expanding its fully-automated surveillance network called IACCS (integrated air command and control system) to the entire country, with the cabinet committee on security recently approving another Rs 8,000 crore for the project. Eventually, the Army and Navy's Akash Teer and Triguna air defence networks will be integrated with the IACCS.

Will the Indian S-400 be mounted on Indian TEL? Or will India also buy Russian KZKT and UralAZ TEL?

I hope they integrate the S-400 on an Indian made TEL. That way, at least some of the components will be Indian, thus saving forex.

We need the S400 to create a deterrent for the PAF much like the Chinese have placed S300 to deter us.
S400 class systems combined with AKASH and Tungushka/Pantsir can be used as an offensive defence asset to offset the current dearth of combat aircraft we are facing. Quite simply a S400 battery in Bhatinda combined with a AKASH battery and around a dozen Tungushka for point defence have the capability to neutralize the ability of the PAF to operate from Pakistani Punjab. These systems can also help alleviate the inevitable teething issues we'll face with the LCA acquisition by supporting CAP missions from the ground.
If this deal is successful it's gonna be a game changer, and we'll have a dream team in the shape of the Parrikar NAMO combine to thank!

We might be able to use a TATA high mobility chassis, TATA has already worked with ALMAZ ANTEY on the TOR earlier.

The interesting thing about this is, instead of the traditional KamAZ chassis, they are using a TATA chassis.

Edit: Just saw you mentioned TATA in that video about Modi which you later stated as wrong video.

Question is not about the capability or need of a BMD but about buying a foreign system at this point of time when our own systems are getting ready.

I believe we shall not use the S 400 as a BMD, rather we shall be using it as a VLRSAM and area dominance/ air superiority asset.
Like I said earlier each battery of S400 can conceivably free a squadron from air defence duties hence increase availability of assets for use as offensive airpower.

Our own systems are not getting ready, they are still in development and once initial development is over, extensive tests will be needed to be conducted, and from here to starting of induction process it will take close to half a decade ag minimum. When Akash and possible Barak8 will give us a medium range cover, nothing we have in our arsenal that is comparable to S400, unless we actually have S300. Our existing SAM arsenal is traditonal defensive nature, when S400 actually has a deterent factor which gives the user both an offensive factor andD stategic depth.

Given the shortage of fighters at present, it would be wise to get some of those systems for the deterent factor alone.

The truck is just a 6x6 truck, albeit with much fatter tires, than what Tata and Ashok Leyland make.

We already have an UralAZ subsidiary in India who makes 6x6 trucks with fat wheels.

The trailer can be made by anybody.

Moreover, if Tata or Ashok Leyland is asked to build one with fat tires, I am sure they can build it.

I was wrong about the truck identification.

The trucks in the OP picture are:

BAZ-64022 (note, the trailer has smaller wheels)

    Ural-5323

Both can be made in India.

If this news is true then it is a big deal for India to acquire the Almaz S-400 Triumf . This system provides comprehensive protection comprising of ABM system and SAM wi system th a variety of weapons and radars .
Of particular prominence is the 92N6E Grave Stone radar with high power aperture and FREQUENCY HOPPING characteristics and agile beam-steering which makes it tough to jam and destroy , It has a detection range of upto 550 kms. It also has Protivnik-GE and Gamma-DE L band radar which has counter VLO characteristics.
The best radar in this system is the 1L119 NEVO SVU multiband radar which can scan a 120-deg. sector mechanically maintaining continuous track throughout . It can detect any stealth aircraft like J-20 , F-22 etc
    The S-400 system carries a whole host of missiles like 40N6E , 48N6E3 , 9M96 etc

The 9M96 missile is an advanced SAM which can work in the most severe clutter and jamming environments can attain speed upto MACH 15 has ARH with mid course guidance and can hit targets upto 140 km horizontal range and destroys target by kinetic energy and blast fragmentation .
The 40N6E is the most potent and long ranged missile of the system , it is specially made to take out all electronic warfare aircraft Its guidance system consist of both active and a semi-active seeker.

If this system is acquired and deputed in NE region it will provide a foolproof IADS for India against PLAAF.
