India's Army Chief General Bikram Singh has offered to build a dockyard worth MVR 7.7 billion (US$ 500 million) in the Maldives in his ongoing visit, Indian media has reported.

According to the Deccan Herald, China had already offered to develop the Uthuru Thilafalhu lagoon in the archipelago's north.

Reclamation work is already underway in the area. Once completed, it will serve as the Maldivian Coastguard's primary operations base and will provide a much-needed berthing space to naval ships and ocean liners.

Whatever it is but good for India and Maldives to have a strategic base since Pakis and Arabs are getting interested there.

Why only now? Why only after China has taken the lead in developing ports in neighbouring countries (string of pearls)?

Is there no foreign policy in place viz the expansion of indian military? The govt BS about the emergence of the country as a super power and the blue water capability of its navy but responds (belatedly) only after others have taken the lead.

Why only the Maldives? Why not Iran? Vietnam?

You want to do as big as you talk.

I presume Malidives is on the laundry list because it is slipping out of India's sphere of influence thanks to the fool policy of Salman Khurshed, given that Manmohan Singh was never in the loop to run the country without Aunty's nod,.

As far as Vietnam is concerned, this is the answer that you are seeking

Vietnam wants India to 'rise quickly' to counter China

The less said about the likes of Salman Kurshid and AK Anthony the better. History will also not look kindly upon them.

As regards Vietnam, the irony is that they're asking, we're not proposing. Let us hope the new govt has a much stronger foreign and defence policy with the right people at the helm of affairs.
