HYDERABAD: If India wants to make strides in the aerospace sector in the future, the country must spell out a vision for the industry at the earliest, said industry experts on Thursday.

"Till now, we do not have a vision for the industry, we need to identify two to three areas in the industry that can be scalable in the future," Tech Mahindra aerospace and defence engineering head Ramaseshan Satagopalan said during the 'Engineering Research and Development (ER&D)' organised by Nasscom and Cyient Limited (former Infotech Enterpises).

Satagopalan pointed out that Indian aerospace industry can eye couple of areas such as additive manufacturing, composites or services to boost the growth prospects of the sector.

TATA HAL Technologies delivery V-P Rajarajan that the key players in the sector must take note of the recent trends in the aerospace sector wherein the industry is looking to shorten the product development cycle, increasing communication modes and environment friendly materials.

He said that the recent decision of the government to open up the defence sector by allowing 49% FDI in the sector will help many private players invest in the aerospace sector , which is a resource starved sector.

The conference was a precursor to Nasscom's upcoming 2014 Engineering Summit in Pune in October.
