Washington, Sep 9 (IANS) The United States believes that India as 'an anchor of stability' in a critical part of the world will have to play a leading role in resolving regional and global issues more effectively.

The two countries may have differences even as they forge a strategic partnership, but they have an effective dialogue to resolve them, State Department spokesman Phillip Crowley told reporters Wednesday.

'Certainly, from a bilateral standpoint, we will have issues that crop up from time to time, and we are in an effective dialogue to resolve those issues,' he said when asked how the US and India can build an 'indispensable partnership' in the face of issues like India's nuclear liability law and US hike of visa fees for professionals.

'But we'd also recognize that India is an anchor of stability in a critical part of the world,' Crowley said referring to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's speech Wednesday that President Barack Obama will use his November visit to India to take US ties with an 'indispensable' partner to the next level.

'And in fact, India can be, as the Secretary said in her remarks today, developing new partners who are able to assume greater responsibility for critical issues in the future,' he said.

'India will have to play a significant role in the global action to combat climate change,' Crowley said. 'And India can play a leading role in terms of the (global) institutions that the Secretary talked about today, the regional architecture that we hope to build in different parts of the world to be able to address regional and global issues more effectively.'

Asked how did they plan to address the concerns of the businesses from both India and US over the Indian nuclear liability legislation making suppliers potentially liable, he said the issue would be resolved through dialogue as the India-US civil nuclear deal was in the interest of both.

'We will do it by what we're doing now,' Crowley said. 'We've been focused on this for a long time. We believe that this agreement and its full implementation is in both the interest of the United States and India.'

'We are having discussions with India about what just passed the parliament,' he said. 'We recognize that both other countries and businesses within India that have raised similar concerns. And we'll work with the Government of India to address those concerns.'

'We do have an ongoing Strategic Dialogue with India,' Crowley noted. 'We do believe earnestly that the world's oldest democracy and the world's largest democracy have a great deal in common.'

Americans, it seems, believe that India and its leaders fall for sweet nothings spoken softly.

I read somewhere that: a fool must be bought by words, an obstinate person must be bought by gifts and a wise person must be bought by truth.

I wonder what this ‘strategic relationship’ that the US keeps harping on is all about.

Apart from a few exercises with our Armed Forces and some training done by US troops at our Schools of Instructions and inviting our senior officers for conferences that are basically jamborees, there is hardly any worthwhile activity that can be termed as genuine bonds for a vibrant strategic relationship.

The US is banking heavily on Pakistan for a solution in Afghanistan. Apparently, at the end of the day, if the manner in which the US is applying itself in Afghanistan is any indication, there will be a Taliban government in Afghanistan that is aligned to Pakistan, casting asunder Indian interests in Afghanistan. That would hardly be expected of a ‘strategic partner’!

If the US wishes to delink Indian interest from Afghanistan and just wants to use India as a bulwark against China, then that would hardly be worth India’s while.

Maybe it is time that India chalks out her own strategic gameplan without US’ goading. It will be better in the long run.

India must undertake parleys with Iran and maybe even Russia over Afghanistan, so that a pro Pakistan Taliban does not get a hold with impunity. It is well known that all three have common interest to thwart Pakistan for gaining ascendancy in Afghanistan. With the Chabahar port established by India in Iran and the highway built from the port joining CAR through Afghanistan, Afghanistan will not be a pawn to Pakistan’s shenanigans. All three must cultivate and strengthen the forces that are inimical to the Taliban that is pro Pakistan.

In so far as China is concerned, India should address China without the US’ interests being the lodestar for India. India should pursue Narashima Rao’s “Look East” policy seriously so that countries on the southern periphery of China remain non aligned and are not influenced by China.

While forcefully working towards promoting Indian interests, India should not appear to be in a confrontationist posture with China or with any other country.

Sadly Indians are a gullible people who do backflips when those who are in power say flattering stuff to them.

Soft soap anyone in your office, for example, and you would have made his day and made your work easier.

'Sabash bete' being said now and then does more than being mere words.

Aren't we all please as Punch that we are on the way to becoming a 'superpower', just because others are saying so?

Let us work selflessly and achieve the goal and then have the world accepting that we are a superpower as a fait accompli!

I agree entirely. Infact, I confess that I am addicted to the 'thanks' being given to the posts. :happy_2:

I guess its a trait that is widely spread in India and will only leave when we get to the top(if at all we get there).

USA treats every country like condom...it uses it till needed then chucks it away.

We should not become that. We should work towards our national interest only.

so far all the Indo-US strategic partnership has produced is rhetoric, under Obama much of the ties created by Bush have been erased.
