My piece on my blog.

Pakistan has struck India again. This time at the brigade headquarters in Uri in Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. 17 soldiers have been martyred. Four terrorists belonging to Pakistan’s Jaish-e-Mohammed were killed in the operation by Indian Army to clear the terrorists.

Reactions from the political leadership came quickly. Home Minister Rajnath Singh canceled his visit to Russia and the US. In a statement he said that Pakistan is a terrorist state and should be called as such and isolated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted

“We strongly condemn the cowardly terror attack in Uri. I assure the nation that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished”

It’s not the first time India has been attacked by Pakistan using its proxies. The memories of Pathankot attack right after PM Modi’s Lahore visit remains fresh. Despite numerous evidence including from those from the US, Pakistan continues to deny any role in the attack nor does it bring the terror leaders like Masood Azhar of JeM or UN designated terrorists Hafiz Saeed of LeT to justice. Being the extended arm of the Pakistan Army and its intelligence agency the ISI, its not expected that Pakistan will give up on or take action against these terrorists and crack down on their organization and infrastructure that trains terrorists.

India’s reaction after the Pathankot attack earlier this year was the same. Home Minister Rajnath Singh after that attack said that while India wanted peace with Pakistan, it would give a “befitting reply” to terrorist attacks.

At the end, only dossiers of evidence were sent and worse, a team from Pakistan with ISI agents was allowed to visit Pathankot airbase. Reciprocal visit by Indian investigating team was denied by Pakistan. In fact media in Pakistan quoting Pakistani authorities said that the Pathankot attack was a false flag operation meaning staged by India to defame Pakistan.

Nothing was done to deter Pakistan from its proxy war against India. In fact union minister Prakash Javdekar said “This process (talks) cannot be destroyed due to one attack. Pakistan is our neighbour. You cannot change your neighbour, you can change friends, and therefore, we must continue with the talks, but talks have to be mainly on the issue of terrorism and that’s what exactly India is doing. Unless you talk terror, terror will not come down”.

Such conciliatory statements which Velu helplessness and lack of strong deterrence mechanism has allowed Pakistan to up the ante after Indian security forces killed Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani. The leader of Hizb Syed Salahuddin who is also the chairman of the United Jihad Council recently said that there can be no peaceful solution in Kashmir and that he will make Kashmir the graveyard for Indian Army and also take the war across India. Off course expecting Pakistan to take action against such terrorists despite such open provocations is asking for too much. Pakistan civil and military leadership eulogize terrorists and have in fact taken it to the international community which is now not interested in Pakistani lies.

In the view of continued terror attacks, India has tried to up the pressure on Pakistan by raising the Balochistan issue. It was first raised by the PM in an all party meet and subsequently in his Independence Day speech. Recently at the UN Human Rights Council, India once again raised the issue of Baloch human rights violation by Pakistan Army. India has also offered political asylum to Baloch leaders. Pakistan has been rattled by India’s aggressive new face but its not a deterrent for it to stop terror attacks against India.

Comments have already begun to fly that the Uri attack by Pakistan is in response to India taking up the Baloch issue. If that’s the case, what was the reason for the Pathankot terror attack or Gurdaspur or Mumbai 26/11 and countless other attacks that have taken thousands of lives in India?

India raising the Baloch issue is a work in progress to counter Pakistan but it is not sufficient to deter terror attacks on India. That will require use of hard power. Political leadership in India has been deterred by the continuous nuclear threat by Pakistan which issues threats week after week through its civil and military establishment. The thought of use of hard power to raise the costs for Pakistan triggering a larger war and taking nuclear dimension limits political reactions to just words which are issued after ever terror attack on India in a set script of condemnation in the strongest possible terms and punishing those who perpetrate the terror attacks (read Pakistan).

India is also plagued with the good boy disease which stops it from taking hard steps to protect its own interests and security. Earning platitudes from foreign powers for showing restraint after every major attack by Pakistani state using its proxies is not going to help India in securing itself.

In fact India is seen as a soft power by the very same foreign powers that praise India due to lack of hard action against Pakistan. World respects strength. India is well within its rights to take military action against Pakistan for the repeated attacks on India and will find support from the international community which is now well aware of Pakistan duplicitous role in combating terror.

US Congressional hearings have repeatedly called out Pakistan in its role in promoting terror in Afghanistan that has killed thousands of US troops. It has stopped aid to Pakistan and also blocked the sale of F-16 fighter jets. Former US Ambassador to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad who appeared before a US Congressional hearing has asked for Pakistan to be declared a terrorist state.

Noted analyst Prof Christine Fair who has authored Fighting to the end: Pakistan Army’s way of war which brings out the Jihadi revisionist agenda of Pakistan, calls for Pakistan to be declared a terrorist state and be sanctioned heavily.

But to protect itself, India will have to act on it own. It will find support internationally as growing terror attacks across the world has reduced tolerance to zero, but it’s India alone which will have to impose punitive costs on Pakistan. The very nukes that Pakistan uses to blackmail the world and prevents military attack on it from India despite promoting terror will become its undoing.

The world will not allow or accept Pakistan’s to use nuclear weapons in response to conventional Indian attack on Pakistan in retaliation for terror attacks on it. It might even mean preventive measures especially by the US if it sees a Pakistan readying itself for a nuclear attack. That opens up the opportunity for India to use its superior conventional strength to put an end to its Pakistan problem.

Every time there is a terror attack, calls from India do come out to go after terror sanctuaries, hot pursuit of terrorists and even war. The question is, will India’s political leadership continue with isssuing empty statements about punishing Pakistan or muster courage and act?

It's time to increase our borders and do a kargil like mission in PoK, nothing demoralizes a country than losing some ground. Choke them economically by capturing key points from where CPEC passes through.

Not by talking about it and broadcasting the fact after successful completion as was in the case of the hot pursuit into Burma's territory ........ that should NOT have been done - it should have remained silent

especially in these types of operations remain silent and dont do any childish chest-thumping ....just achieve your objectives quietly and move onto the next

even given the Indian political system where a politician has to boast about what he has achieved, still he or she can boast about the overall results and not on the methods used .....that will make it safe for the military people to do the next operation without all the secrets have been given away by some chest-thumping politician

It won't happen. Indian political leaders- without exception- are a bunch of cowards. They care too much about world opinion and focusing their attention on internal economic development to ever be a threat to Pakistan.

India: A top-5 military power saddled with the most pusillanimous political structure known to man.

In all this, I see an uncanny similarity in reactions of Congress govt. earlier & BJP now. I don't have much faith in diplomatic actions or economic sanctions. A full-scale war is only solution. Let the map of South-Asia be redrawn. If we perish, at least our future generations can rebuild and carry forward Indian civilization. Our civilization has weathered many attacks by muzzies since medieval age. This time also, we will prevail.

we could be seeing some changes in the observations of what you have written

i dont think they are necessarily a bunch of ....... especially with Sir Modi as PM ,.

but going for peskystan when actually the problem is in our own backyard is deflecting from the correct area of focus .

Sure the instigation for it may come from across the LOC (LAC ? ) but a lot of the solution lies within our very own boundary lines and is within our own control and if we fail to see that then we are like a car mechanic who is looking at the tyres when the problem is in the steering mechanism ....it will never even in hundreds of years, ever be solved that way

i have said before we basically need a carrot and stick approach to winning the kashmiris over to common sense .....which is not prevailing in the valley at this moment

to give just one example ....... ( in reality we will have to apply the approach im about to suggest to hundreds of other areas )

(1) Require that all kashmiris go to only one or max two universities which are reserved mainly for kashmiris plus some outsiders to allow for mixing with other indian and getting a better feel for nationhood ....they are not go go to other universities in the nation , until this problem is solved , nor are they to go abroad.... they are to be given tuition free - paid by the taxpayer

(2) that university or two shall be located outside the troubled areas and all student who attend will be given relocation allowances plus stipend to visit their families during vacation times and as for tuition fees, there will be no charge as stated above ...ksahmiris who do well here and behave accordingly will be allowed into the system for employment in the government or private sector anywhere in the nation

(3) those who do not behave well will be ear-marked accordingly with a view to give them a chance to change and show their improved behaviour

(4) those who insist to continue hard-core including hoisting peskystan flags will be given warnings and eventually if they continue , dismissal ....these will never get employment in government nor private sector and they will have a a diminished life compared to those who do well

Had we implemented something to this effect decades ago when it became clear and obvious that there was gonna be a serious problem, we would have basically solved the problem by now ......
instead we are looking at the tyres, when the problem lies in the steering area

Even now, it is the better way forward although we will have to take some flak for not having implemented this earlier, much earlier imho. It is the FAR better solution to an all-out war which some folks have suggested  .....nice to suggest it when you are unlikely to go to the front-line eh ?

the soviets applied this policy to keep the asian republics decent and avoid extreme interpretations of religion

Economic sanctions are a proven way to put nations in a "caution" mode.

Its contradictory that.:
India is asking all nations to put some kind of economic sanction on pakistan and we ourselves has put pakistan on MFN status...STILL!!
India is asking all nations to isolate pakistan..but what has India done to downgrade pakistan.
mean this is ridiculous..

What is pakistan's loss after every terror attack on India...Quantitatively..

Nothing...Its only in recent months that US has put a stance against pakistan ..and that is NOT because US "understands" pak proxy terrorism in India..but because India opened up the market for US defense equipments..Its very clear and clean.
Nations know this and every nation will use the economy of purchase capacity to shift alliances.

In this fight India cant expect too much out of the west nor so called "allies"...if we don't initiate action against pakistan ourself and find a solution on it by playing hard ball.

pakistan will always maintain the dual line that
1)Its all done by non state actors
2)pakistan itself is a victim of terrorism

This is their tactical veil to distance itself from responsibility...and yes they have been effectively employing this event after event and India and other nations has fell for such events.

Parikkar has mentioned to pakistan that India will go after the terrorists in pakistan and such a move is NOT against pakistan..
This is a good way to put that to counter the paki veil..
Time is NOW to test the political consensus on such a statement by the much glorified terms "time and place of India's chosing" and or "Covert ops"

Good article! Here is my take on it.

As I said earlier Pakis are upto something specially after Balochistan was internationalized recently and Pakis were caught by surprise. They answred in the way they could ie. sending some cowards as "non-state-actors". After getting free from Zarb-e-kabz or butchering their own people Pakis have put their full energy on JK.

In todays world sometime big powers don't fight directly. Remember the way Russia punished Turkey when Turkey shot down Russian plane.Turkey earns a lot by tourism and Russians tourists are major chunk.I saw a program how Turkish hotel industry were so baffled/nervous since they saw big decline in Russian tourists and wanted to have good relations with Russia.Recently even Afgans rejected Paki made stuff and 800 of Paki Mills got closed.Afgans recently refused Pakis trade route to other countries.

India needs to punish Pakis more in Economic terms specially the top brass of Pak ISI/Army since they make the plans to be in power and rule their jahil kaum.Pak Army always look for war every 10 years since it keep them in power and existence.

So below is my Action Plan for now instead of a knee jerk reaction by us:-
  1. Hurt their Economy (Water/Local & Intl Sanctions etc and specially CPEC)
  2. Collaborate more with Afghans/Irani in both Economy and Military platforms.
  3. Thrash the Separatists/Wahabi Terrorist Muftis in J&K.Don't show mercy since we got all proof.
  4. Ban Burqa Dutt/WKK type low level anti-nationals who are used by Pak retired generals.
  5. Keep Military options open anytime for real covert operations and response.
  6. Balochistan issue to be raised even more and give them "moral support".
  7. Review Business with China since our money is indirectly used to help Pakis.
  8. We "common" Indians should also reject Chinese crap as much as possible.I do same.
  9. We 1.25 Billion country have to do something and can't expect Ghana to help us.
  10. Tell US clear that they also have to do much more to keep Pakis in check.

After this
AFSPA will remain
Pallet guns might remain
People will speak less on HR violation
Protest in Kashmir will continue to divert attention
There will be no cross border raids from the Indian army
More combing operations will start and strength of personals will increase

Prasun K. Sengupta made the following statements about the developments and how we should proceed -

" If you want to know where the launch-pad for such infiltrations is located, then here it is:

There you go! I have now shared the target coordinates with everyone! That's the launch-pad located between the Uri-Poonch bulge. There are 2 options now: Either destroy this entire PA Battalion HQ through a 3-hour field artillery fire-assault, or plan a surgical campaign aimed at capturing & keep for good the Haji Pir Pass. Nothing else will hurt the PA the most. Launching surgical strikes against suspected terror camps won't achieve anything since such camps are makeshift & mobile. The objective instead should be to cause permanent damage to the PA's infrastructure within PoK bas was done in August 1965 through OPERATION FAULAAD. If Turkey's military can occupy lands within northern Iraq & Syria in defence of its own national interests, India too can & must, since in any case the UN had clearly stated in 1948 that PoK is an integral part of the state of J & K which had legally acceded to India in October 1947 & therefore any Indian military operation to be mounted will be well inside Indian territory (i.e. PoK) & legally this does not constitute any violation of international law. It's high time India's ruling political elites & ill-informed journalists grasp this reality once & for all. "

" What ceasefire agreement??? LoLz! There was NEVER any ceasefire agreement in writing along the LoC. It was just a verbal declaration by both India & Pakistan in November 2003 to observe the ceasefire. This verbal declaration was NEVER put into writing. I continue to be amused & flabbergasted by any effort to declare Pakistan a terrorist state. Where is the need for such a declaration? Did Turkey wait for Iraq & Syria to be declared as terrorist states since the 1980s just so that it can send its troops to fight the Kurds inside northern Iraq & Syria? Where exactly is the need for such a bleeding-heart attitude that craves for Pakistan being declared a terrorist state by the rest of the world? Why should India await the permission of the whole world to liberate its own territory that has been illegally occupied by the enemy? Why did A B Vajpayee not realise & accept this elementary fact-of-life when he decreed that the IA & IAF should not cross the LoC in 1999? After all, that was a God-given opportunity to go as far as Skardu & Khapalu because the PA was then in denial about its involvement & therefore did not bother to even inform the PAF & PN about OP Badr & as a result, India's military could have totally seized the initiative at that time to liberate vast chunks of Baltistan & capture the Haji Pir Pass as well.

The stark fact-of-life is that India's ruling politicians have NEVER understood the true meaning of military power & without this, no one can become a practitioner of the use of military power as an instrument of state policy. And such ignorance continues till this day!!! What else can explain India totally missing the point when Pakistan's Federal Interior Minister was lecturing Rajnath Singh in Islamabad about the the legality of militarily supporting an armed insurrection as part of a wider 'freedom struggle'? To anyone with even average IQ, this for all intents & purposes was the 'green light' being shown by Pakistan to signal its determination to militarily support the efforts of JeM & LeT inside J & K. This was the original intelligence failure, & not what transpired later. Therefore, in my eyes, India's entire national security establishment has collectively failed to interpret such clear signals from Pakistan & this to me is most mind-boggling.

Let's hope within the next 24 hours there will be swift & brutal retaliation by at least raising to the ground that PA Battalion HQ that I had earlier identified as the target. "

++

" Anger & gambles NEVER delivers anything productive. Cool-headedness & shrewd calculations on the other hand produce the desired results. That's why my recommendation is to strike across, seize & hold the real-estate across the LOC that is rightfully India's property, even as per UNSC resolutions. "

++

" What escalation? The PA is today spread out throughout the western frontier astride the Durand Line & 53% of the personnel resources of the PA are all committed there. And most of them are all NLI personnel who are only good for guard duties since they don't possess any warfighting spirit. The PA's deployment across the LoC is therefore extremely thin now & the numbers aren't sufficient for the PA to withstand any limited offensive AirLand campaign of India. The LoC is not a border, only a temporary ceasefire line as per international law & either party can violate the ceasefire where & when it suits them. The only way of countering any violations of the LoC is to occupy dominating heights so that the enemy hasn't got any visual means of observing what's happening on the Indian side. In both the Uri-Poonch Bulge & the Leepa Valley Bulge, the dominating heights are held by the PA & hence they have a huge advantage in monitoring the IA's LoC patrolling routines. Take this advantage away from the PA & it then becomes a sitting duck. Hence my recommendation is to seize & occupy for good all these dominating heights, especially the Haji Pir Pass. And since Pakistan calls these areas as 'Azaad Kashmir', it cam't accuse India of attacking sovereign Pakistan territory since the IA & IAF won't be crossing the IB, but only the LoC & that too for liberating that piece of territory that belongs to India as per the UNSC resolutions. So if India goes on the offensive, let's see how many 'Azaad Kashmiris' take up arms to defend their country. "
