    India: Five killed in police firing in Tamil Nadu

    11 September 2011 | BBC News

    Five people have been killed after the police in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu fired on political protesters.

    The incident occurred at Paramakudi town, some 530km (330 miles) from the capital, Chennai, on Sunday.

    Most of the protesters belonged to TMMK - a party of low-caste Dalits (formerly untouchables) - who were demanding the release of their leader John Pandian.

    The police had arrested Mr Pandian fearing that his presence at a party function would incite tensions.

    The party workers had gathered in the town to observe the death anniversary of a Dalit leader, Immanuel Sekaran.

    After Mr Pandian was arrested, the protesters blocked roads and set a number of government vehicles on fire.

    Nearly 30 people, including policemen, were injured in the clashes.

    Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha said the police had to fire in self-defence and to protect public property.

    John Pandian seems like a christian name. Christians are shamelessly claiming SC/ST status to gain from special provisions. These Christian groups have been radicalized and need to be reigned in.

    Local body elections are approaching in TN. But i did not expect such a big incident.
    Already some parties have started drawing political mileage.

    All this reminds me of the Communal violence bill by the centre. Even such incidents could be used by the centre to undermine the authority of opposition ruled state Govts.

    John Pandian is bloody third rate rowdy.

    He should have been shot long back instead of pampering him in jail

    @amit:

    Its only in the glossy conversion pamphlets does it mention that you get treated better once converting to Christianity. They undergo the same treatment as they experienced before conversion. Its only a myth that casteism exists only in Hinduism. These low caste Christian converts cant even bury their dead in the same cemetry as the high caste christians.
