NEW DELHI: India is the fifth most powerful country in the world, says the latest national security index (NSI) designed by the country's foremost security and economic experts. A part of India's National Security Annual Review 2010, which will be officially released by foreign minister S M Krishna on April 19, the NSI 2010 placed India fifth in the hierarchy of top 50 nations identified on the basis of their GDP.

According to Foundation for National Security Research director Satish Kumar, who edited the national security review, the NSI is based on an assessment of defence capability, economic strength, effective population, technological capability and energy security of the top 50 countries . The US is at the top of the list on the basis of these criteria followed by China, Japan and Russia.

South Korea emerged as the sixth most powerful nation followed by Norway, Germany, France and UK.

While India ranked third in the case of population and fourth in terms of defence capabilities , it was at the 34th position in technology and 33rd in energy security. Only US, China and Russia are ranked higher than India in defence capability. In economic strength , India ranked seventh.

Out of the five criteria, maximum weightage was given to defence capabilities at 30%. Economic strength, technology and effective population had weightage of 20% each. Energy security had the remaining 10%. The national security annual review governing body, which comprises a host of experts, is headed by former foreign secretary M K Rasgotra.

On the likelihood of people raising eyebrows over India's extremely high rank, the NSI report said the strategic community in India will still take time to get used to India being such a powerful country. "Of course, the variable that helps India most is the size of its skilled working population. But that variable helps China to a great deal,'' it said.

    FEEL GOOD FACTOR

Assessment based on defence capability, economic strength, effective population, technological capability and energy security of top 50 countries.

5th most powerful country in all, 3rd in terms of population, 4th on defence capabilities, 7th on economic strength, 33rd on energy security, 34th on technology. US on top, followed by China, Japan & Russia India is trailed by S Korea, Norway, Germany, France & UK

The source isn't neutral. Is it self praise?
I'd rather applaud it coming from an independent research. Although I guess the India ranking really is somewhere around 5 only. It isn't an extreme over-projection.

A nation which imports 70% of her weapons
A nation faces serious problems like starvation, disease, unemployment.
A nation which cannot provide social security to her citizens.
A nation where legal system works at sluggish pace, corruption and crimes are rampant.
A nation which doesn't have control over her neighborhood, whose rival is 1/10th her size.

Is the 5th most powerful naton on Earth.
    hmmmmmm......OK........:pound:

I don't believe it once for a bit.

We need to develop our Mil-Ind Complex to an extent that only some proportion of the requirements of Hi-Tech Weapons need to be imported.

Energy security could be rated higher according to me, coz we have two miscreants surrounding us and we need to sustain their prolonged mischief coming anytime.

Need to increase our grasp of Technology and absorb it.

It’s too bad that India only rank at 5th most powerful country. It’s high time to increase the weight of effective population to 95% in the calculation. With the highest demographic dividend, India can easily reach No.1 superpower position in next year report.

By that criteria you are already the superpower, and will remain one for a long time. And if we ask them to increase the weight of swollen headed internet warriors to 95%, your country will remain the superpower for eternity. :D

Taking account of the survey what worries me :
we are miles away in terms of our quest to see our country top, if we fail to improve in these, it would be difficult to sustain the growth.

    Subjective list. Subjective topic.

One thing that really concerns me is how much a country is capable of changing how other countries function.

    • USA invaded Iraq and Afghanistan far away from North America and made some difference. USA is strong.
    • Russia invaded Georgia in its neighbourhood, but without any NATO-type membership or coalition and in the face of US opposition. Russia is strong.
    • PRC managed to steal or snatch territories from most of her neighbours. PRC is definitely strong.
    • France and UK invaded Libya with US backing, or leadership if you will, and did not quite manage to do much, at least as of now. Still, they are kind of strong.
    • India managed a few things with debateable success, like IPKF, but then that was a while ago. India is, just like above, kind of strong.

The last three, UK, France and India should be ashamed they are even in the list. India has a face saving grace in the fact that it does not have a NATO-like life insurance or a protector like USSR any more.

    True

No it doesn't. But then I don't know what crap sources you bank on for Indian news. AFAIK there's a hysteria here about China, forget about beating it again and again. So you can keep that sarcasm back in the pocket.
Its some useless government self praise but we know (atleast vaguely) where exactly we stand and that there is nothing to either boast or fear.

    Regards,
    Virendra
