KOLKATA: The Election Commission has raised concerns on increasing incidents of pre and post poll violence in Bengal. Incidents of poll-related violence and deaths are on the rise in the state. According to a Bengal police report submitted to the Union home ministry, in the run up to the 2014 Parliamentary elections (during two election months), there were reports of 14 deaths, over 1,166 incidents of violence—one of the highest in India.

The report was submitted to the ministry after the MHA sought the poll-related violence facts from the state police. The story in the municipal elections in the state, held in 2015, is no different either. Data shows 462 cases of violence and 4 deaths during the March, April municipal elections.

The report claims that there were 450 instances of factional feuds in 2015, in which 47 people were killed and over 1,000 people were injured. In first two months of 2016, there were 11incidents of party men hurling bombs at each other in which six people were killed. But, interestingly Trinamool's mid-level leaders and cadres are fighting with each other, in the absence of any Opposition.

Reports of intra-party clashes are surfacing almost on a daily basis and the growing number of infighting is disturbing Mamata. In February 2016, three blasts resulting in seven deaths have been reported. All three instances involved making crude bombs in the houses of TMC men in Birbhum & Murshidabad. Significantly, the facts have not gone unnoticed by the Election Commission either. The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), too expressed concerns over the violence in four districts — Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum and Budwan.

Speaking over the pre-poll violence, CEC N Zaidi said, "The reports about illegal arms, explosions and other nefarious activities in these districts have reached the commission. We have asked the chief secretary, home secretary, DGP and other senior officials to put special focus in these areas."

I heard TMS has cadres of goons instead of party workers. I believe it more than any thing.

As long as Bengal has no face to counter Mamatha, she is going to rule that state. It is up to Bangalis to do what is needed for them. They can't expect some outside heroes to come and rescue them from shit happening.
The thing is, they have opportunity now. They can empower BJP irrespective of the outcome. At least it will inject some new blood into main stream.
The only weapon, they have now, is vote. How cliché it sounds.

They can't fight with TMC goons. If they fight, they will go 100 years backwards. Our states are running with super speed in development. No time for WB to engage in meaningless squabbles.

As per opinion poll in some news channels TMC will win the assembly elections. But there are some people in Bengal who will vote for BJP. So it's not their fault.

Military action is the only solution against these syndicate goons. Even Calcutta High Court is saying they are not being spared by syndicates.

I am not endorsing BJP here, just stating the obvious.

Or some serious infighting b/w those syndicates.
These people are outdated. They are going to be extinct in coming years.

Got news that the Centre has ensured that polls are free of violence. This is what I had wished. Credit goes to Modi for doing this.

Said that, there is a possibility Mamata will remain in power.

don't remember where I read this, but TMC goons had been threatening to wipe out families of those who vote some other party. in villages, distributing white sarees. sending CRPF wouldn't be of much use in this case if people don't come out to vote out of fear.

Mamata is atill popular across the state. I remember what @DingDong said in another thread. Popular belief dictates that booth capturing will sway the election results. In reality, that only works in close contests. Essentially, two things worked in her favour. The work she did as Railway Minister and playing up the anti-land acquisition card which found resonance with the farmers in the backdrop of Singur and Nandigram violence.

Said that, quite a few corruption accused TMC politicians have won. That says quite a bit.

In any event, the results are not surprising. Both @bose and I expected Mamata to retain power.

The work she did as Rail Minister is nothing to write home about. In fact by announcing numerous sops and populist measures, she broke the financial back-bone of Rail Ministry from which Railways have not recovered yet.

Please elaborate, it stinks of rigging. Polling officials & State Election Commission were biased in favour of Ruling Party as is the norm.
Both @bose & @jackprince predicted rise of BJP and demise of TMC. It is I who predicted Mamata to return albeit less impressively than 2011. But she has done even better than 2011 !!!!

Agree. She not only broke the financial backbone off the Railway Ministry, even WB state is in deep debt. Please see the link to The Telegraph article.

I don't think so. Modi made sure that the elections are free and fair. There was a lot of rhetoric coming from the BJP camp about how bad WB is. He was hoping that BJP will win if the elections are free and fair. That did not happen. Fact of the matter is, Mamata is continuing Jyoti Basu's pro-farmer and anti-industry policies. Budddahdeb Bhattacharya tried to mend the course, but he was ousted. The very people who formed the backbone of CPI(M), have now become the backbone of TMC.

Even I expected TMC's vote share to drop but I expected her to retain power.

Right. Forcible land acquisition in Singur & Nandigram gave Mamata a handle. Buddhadev was not canny enough to read the pulse of the people in hinterland. CPM paid a heavy price.
