Has India upgraded those SUTs? They were superb designs in the 1980s but wonder if they are upgraded or new models purchased to top up stocks?

Indian Navy currently have AEG-SUT Mod-1 wire-guided active/passive homing torpedoes which can have a range of about 30kms at 35 knots speed. Indian Navy opt for SUT because of its 533mm standard Torpedo design.

Those guys who prefer varunastra,
Submarine launch varunastra is still under development. It may be loaded on these subs once developed.

That's what I thought. SUT-1 is ageing. I know it can be upgraded for better performance. HDW was offering the Sea Hake.

I think, IN knows better about what they want.
Hopefully, Indigenous Submarine Launched Torpedo will be available for trials soon.
It may be one of the reason to stick with this Torpedo.

I'm sure they know exactly what they want. They wanted the Black Shark. However, I know the SUT-1 to be an excellent design and one hopes there is follow up to improve its performance pending an indigenous solution.

First Scorpene Submarine Kalvari to join Indian Navy Fleet for Active Deterrence Patrol in July
Wednesday, May 31, 2017 By: The Hindu

The first of the six Scorpene submarines being built in India under technology transfer is likely to join the Navy by end of July, Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba said on Wednesday.

Kalvari is going through its final phase of trials and we are hopeful that in July-August we will take delivery,” he said speaking to the media on the sidelines of a Navy-FICCI seminar on “Building India’s future Navy: technology imperatives.”

Six Scorpene submarines are being built under Project-75 by Mazgaon Docks Limited (MDL) with technology transfer from France.

On the recent decision by Sri Lanka to deny permission for a Chinese submarine to dock at Colombo, Adm Lanba said that it was a decision by the Sri Lankan Government.

“We have no dialogue on this with the Sri Lankans. It was a decision they have taken on their own,” he stated.

The decision by Sri Lanka came coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to the Island nations. Chinese submarines on anti-piracy patrols had in the past docked.

Strategic Partnership ::

The Navy is hopeful of pushing the two deals under Strategic Partnership (SP) policy very soon given the high priority.

“As per the model, we all have to get the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) on what we want to get the Strategic Partners build, so that the SP in each segment can be identified. We are hopeful that we will be able to move the process within six months,” Adm Lanba said.

Of the four segments under SP, two are for the Navy, submarines and Naval helicopters. The others are single engine fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force and armoured vehicles for the Army.

Both the Navy deals have been held up from sometime due to delay in finalising the SP policy.

I had also stated that AMCA will come only after 2032 and more likely 2035, people here again mocked that it will be completed by 2025 and we will get first plane by 2027. Also i had told and still say that we are buying more than 250 Rafale, again people here mock at me that we can't buy 250 Rafale as it is expensive but after producing in India and significantly higher numbers which will be increased by new buyers like UAE, Indonesia etc. the R&D cost will come down, which reduce the cost of Indian made Rafale substantially making it affordable to both India & France which will then buy more further reducing cost.
Rafale do not cost more than 100 mn USD even today.

First Indian sub Kalvari to be commissioned in July/August

Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba on Wednesday said the first of the six indigenous submarines, being built in collaboration with DCNS of France, would be commissioned in July or August this year. The first submarine, the Kalvari, is going through the final trials. It had fired an indigenous torpedo last week.

On being asked if India influenced the decision of Sri Lanka in not allowing a Chinese submarine from docking at Colombo last week, Admiral Lanba said, “We were not in touch with them (Sri Lanka) on the issue; they did it on their own.”

He said that after the announcement of the strategic partnership, that is allowing private Indian industry to tie-up with foreign partners, the two projects--the making of additional submarines and fighter jets for operations from sea-going aircraft carriers--are top priority.

On being asked about the indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, Admiral Lanba said it would start trials in 2019 and would be with the navy in 2020.

Earlier while inaugurating the seminar, ‘Building India’s Future Navy Technology Imperatives’ organised by Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Admiral Lanba called on the industry to take advantage of the offers and help in Make in India.

Second India-built conventional submarine ready for sea trials

SOURCE: DOMAIN-B

The second conventional submarine, INS Khanderi, built at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd will start sea trials off the Mumbai coast this week, while the first one has completed all trials and is set for commissioning into the Indian Naval fleet.

INS Kalveri, the first new conventional submarine, built at state-run Mazagon Docks, will be commissioned in July-August – the first after a gap of 17 years – Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba said on Wednesday.

INS Kalvari (tiger shark), the first of the six French diesel-electric Scorpene submarines being built under the Rs23,652 crore `Project-75′ at Mazagon Docks in Mumbai, has undergone extensive sea trials.

The second one, INS Khanderi, in turn is slated to begin its long sea trials from Thursday.

The Indian Navy has a current fleet of 13 ageing conventional submarines, with just half of them operational at any given time. India also has two nuclear-powered submarines, INS Arihant and INS Chakra, but the latter does not have nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles because it has been acquired on lease from Russia.

China, which has over 55 submarines, with at least eight of them being nuclear ones, often frequent the IOR. Indian Navy has tracked at least seven Chinese submarines – both nuclear and conventional – entering the regionn since December 2013.

Although the Scorpene project faced huge time and cost overruns, the induction of new submarines comes as a big booster for the Navy, which is pitted against Pakistan in the West and China in the East.

INS Kalvari was to be ready by 2012, with the other five coming by 2017. Now, with the third submarine INS Vela to be “launched” later this year, all the six will be inducted by 2020 or so.
