In India, police shoot dead journalist covering protest - Committee to Protect Journalists

Why were they trying to disperse protesters with live ammo? Not even China does that anymore.

In India, the regular police force is not trained for crowd control or mob dispersement. However, there is a separate unit that is trained to handle these situations professionally. But their numbers are few and are not available everywhere. Its time the regular police force is trained for riot control.

And equipped for riot control as well. Even the best trained men can't do much when their choices are either lathis or live ammo. Where is the tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons?

Rapid Action Force is trained for riot control and is equipped with tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons. The regular police however is mostly armed with lathis and not equipped with any other riot-control equipment.
