30,000 African migrants take to Tel-Aviv streets protesting detention policy

Tens of thousands of Africans took to the streets of Tel Aviv on Sunday in protest of Israel's detention of their fellow migrants deemed illegal job-seekers by the nation. The rally is the biggest ever held by migrants in the state.

"More than 30,000 demonstrators marched peacefully in Tel Aviv," police spokeswoman Lubra Samri told AFP.

The protesters gathered in the capital's centre Rabin Square, chanting slogans like: "We are all refugees" and "yes to freedom, no to prison!" A three-day strike was also launched in several Israeli cities.

According to police, the protesters are licensed to demonstrate for a period of three days. Organizers conducted a leaflet campaign, distributing flyers which read "release all refugees from prison and stop this detention policy," reported Reuters.

According to human rights groups, some 300 people have already been arrested since a new law was passed three weeks ago. The legislation permits authorities to detain any migrant already in Israel without a valid visa indefinitely.

Approximately 60,000 migrants from Eritrea and Sudan, among other nations, have passed into Israel since 2006, according to authorities. A border fence, since constructed, has helped to stem the flow from Egypt. However, those already in Israel still run the risk of being placed in an 'open prison' in the country's southern desert.

With the new policy, any migrants who enter Israel since the legislation was passed could be jailed in a standard prison for anything up to a year, while the old policy allowed for migrants to be detained for anything up to three years, dependent upon their status.

Israel deems the migrants "infiltrators", according to hardline orthodox former interior minister, Eli Yishai. He said that their presence was encouraged by "anti-Zionist human rights organizations". Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has labeled them a threat to the social fabric of the nation.

Well, if you don't wanna end up in a detention camp, don't cross the border illegally. It's that simple.
These people enter Israel illegally and expect to exploit the system ?

Same thing happens in Europe, where hordes of Africans in their boats, land in Lampedusa (Italy) and make it illegally into the rest of EU.
Same thing with India (Bangladesh).
Same thing with the US (Mexicans).

If immigrants do not assimilate into the host nation's culture(s), then multiculturalism might fail.
This is especially true for Israel. A lot of these Africans, and the very identity of Israel (Jewish state) will become invalid.

a. Every effort must be made by Israel to send these illegals back to Ethiopia or Eritrea or whatever and
b. every effort must be made by Israel to properly assimilate the existing legal migrants into Israeli society.

It is an existential threat to Israel, esp since their population is low and since it is surrounded by hostile nations.
Same points a. and b. apply to other nations be it European, American or Indian.

I dont know if you know this, but right in the middle of an Ethopian civil war. Israeli air force ran continuous airlift operations to move the Ethopian jews to safety. There were pilots who did run after run of their military transport aircraft and moved thousands of jew ethopian jews to safety.

These Ethopian jews integrated seamlessly into the Israeli culture and were made to feel at home. The same with the Nagas they moved from Nagaland to Israel, and the few Keralite jews Israel offered to immigrate to Israel.

Besides, 73% of Israelis are Israeli born (Statistical Abstract of Israel 2012 - No. 63 Subject 2 - Table No. 25).

Israel is a sovereign state, so they can certainly do whatever they like with regards to immigration. I just find it ironic.

Israel should come down from its stand i.e. that land belongs only and only to jews because it was promised to them.

OTOH, resources are scare, especially water and arable land. So leave out illegal, even legal migrants can find it difficult.

There are two categories of illegal migrants in Israel for whom there are obstacles to deport:

- Eritrea is a dictatorship so it is morally difficult to send people to this country if they don't want, though it may be legally possible.

- North Sudan is in a state of war with Israel. The Sudanese laws forbid the Sudanese citizens to visit the Zionist state. Therefore, if Israel deports the citizens of this enemy state, they will face criminal charges in Sudan for having been in Israel.

So Israel struck a deal with a 3rd country in Africa that accepts to receive them in exchange of $8,000 per migrant:

Jews were put in the only part of the desert without its only valuable resource "OIL" and they made the most of it. They turned it into a land of opportunity.... barely the size of mumbai with half the population of mumbai they have set an example for every ostracized minority there ever was.

Now, surviving in a land surrounded by enemies does not come with a gandhian approach. They learnt the harshest way possible about what happens when you dont take what you deserve and they have learnt their lesson well. Very simply put, they are doing whatever it takes to survive and their survival and prosperity is proof that they are not wrong completely.

but only israel can deport thousands of illegal immigrants , maybe US with reasons like 'acting under the law'

First off, these idiots have entered Israel illegally and then they complain at being detained.

Israel should do them a favour and send them back to whichever country from Africa they came from - let them enjoy the free air of their respective native lands.
