IB redflags entry of Wahhabi preachers into India - Rediff.com India News
An IB report says some 25,000 preachers of the extreme Wahhabi form of Islam came to India last year as visitors, reports Vicky Nanjappa.

The ultra conservative brand of 'Wahhabi Islam' is gaining ground in India, according to a report by the Intelligence Bureau. The report reveals that at least 25,000 scholars preaching the conservative brand of Islam have visited India in 2013 and participated in events that have drawn in crowds of over 12 lakh people.

These preachers enter the country as visitors from across 20 countries, especially Saudi Arabia, and participate in events and preach their conservative, hardline doctrine to the youth. The IB report also says that most of these preachers attended events in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Bihar, Maharashtra and Jharkhand.

Experts added that during these events held by the Wahhabi preachers, the focus is on the implementation of the Sharia law in its strictest form. "They speak of the importance of the law and how it is the only way to save Islam from attacks," said an IB official.

When asked who organises these events, authorities told Rediff.com that most of the events are organised by Tablighi Jamaats, who adopt a back-to-basics approach to Islam.

Other than the Tablighi Jamaat invitations, scholars preaching the Wahhabi doctrine were also invited by organisations such as the Ahl-e-Hadis and others, said an IB official.

Officials further added that most Indian Mujahideen operatives, who are in their custody, speak highly of the Wahhabi form of Islam. In fact, Yasin Bhatkal, the man behind the Indian branch of the Indian Mujahideen, which is responsible for several terror attacks in India, has said the IM was formed with the intention of implementing the Sharia law in the country.

Apart from the security threat from the indoctrination of some of the youth through these seminars, there is also a chance of hell breaking loose within the Muslim community too.

For, the overwhelming majority of India's Muslim subscribe to the moderate form of Islam. However, the worry is the gradual rise in the number of Muslims subscribing to the Wahhabi form of Islam. According to IB, around 10 years ago, this number was insignificant. Today, however, it fears that the number may have increased.

Officials say the trend needs to be kept in check. for which the hardcore preachers entering the country should be thoroughly vetted and their events should be looked into.

A correct move.

Wahhabism cannot come in to ruin the mindset and create chaos.

Suddenly IB is rejuvenated and doing right things which were not permitted by the termites called congress-I.

If one knows what we had been talking on this forum on couple of occasions vis a vis IB and how internal security has been compromised by Sonia Gandhi lead UPA; he would know that we all were making sense, not mere ranting for sake of ridiculing Congress-I and skicular trolls.

One can refer to threads on Ishrat Jahan case for more details.

This is a clear indication that Internal security is going to be a big focus point for the new Government.

We need the IB to be rejuvinated from it's enforced sleep of the last decade.

This is the moot question. Diggy Chacha will be first off the block.
He should volunteer for Iraq.

I think he would go and join the ISIS since they are Sunnis since Osama sahab, whose cudgels he took up regarding the terrorist's funeral rites, was a Sunni.

However, his intimate photos through cyber mail was most unIslamic.

He does not have the gurda for combat, but I am sure he can be a General Secretary and bring the Iraqi conflict to a speedy end, by losing badly as his Party has done under the stewardship of his General Secretaryship.

Wahabi take over of India, how they are doing it?

The conflict in Iraq has brought to the limelight a major tussle between two sects of Muslims. The ISIS has been trying to impose the most orthodox form of Islam known as Wahabism and the effects of this are being seen in several parts of the world. The Indian Muslim who subscribe to the moderate Hanafi form of Islam are caught in a cross fire as some sects who subscribe to the Wahabi form of Islam are trying to impose this faith in a big way.

In a bid to impose the Wahabi culture those who preach this faith have devised a two pronged strategy. First they preach the faith and try and convince as many people as possible and then they take over the Mosque and ensure that those who come to pray there follow this style of Islam.
According to a report of the Intelligence Bureau this problem of trying to impose the Wahabi faith in India started in the year 2010. Although there were signs of this faith trying to be imposed in a big way, the real sign of a Mosque being taken over was seen in the year 2010 at Kandivilli. The neighbouring Pathanwadi area has around 1300 persons who subscribe to the Wahabi school of thought. They had virtually laid seige on the Mosque and even prevented many who visited that Mosque from entering.

Similar incidents was reported in Mosques in Lucknow, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and also Bihar. The Wahabi scholars come down to India in large numbers and last year alone as per the report of the Intelligence Bureau there were nearly 25000 of them who had come to India and 12 lakh took part in these events.

Some of the Muslims in India have complained that there is a growing influence of these Wahabis and they try their best to take over Mosques and preach this faith. The propaganda by the ISIS has only made some radicals hero worship them and they have even started beleiving that this faith has the biggest impact. An Intelligence Bureau official says that in Saudi Arabia there are a dedicated set of persons who travel across the world to ensure that the Wahabi culture is imposed. In many cases in India especially in the Kerala mosques there have been fights between the two sects trying to take over the Mosques. In some cases funds from Saudi Arabia have been pumped in to bribe some persons in the Mosque who for the lure of money hand over control of the Mosque to Wahabi followers. Take for instance the case of one Mosque in Nagpur. This mosque was in a bad shape and needed immediate renovation. The Mosque administration was in any position to repair the the same for want of funds. This was when the Wahabis sprung into action and repaired the entire Mosque and this helped them gain control over the same.

While on one hand there is a tussle to take control over the Mosque on the other Saudi preachers have tried taking control over the Madrasas as well. This is a worrying sign say the security agencies as these are schools and they would not want the youngsters learning this form of Islam which is very radical in nature. Today there are over 50000 Madrasas and several are under the control of the Wahabis and we hope the Muslim community in India views this seriously and ensures that they regain control over the same, the officer also points out.

One Wahabi follower from Kerala who did not want to be named said that the other Muslims are making a big deal of this. We are only trying to preach the real Islam and according to the religion worshiping of Sufi shrines are not permitted. I do not understand why they are resisting the real form of Islam.
According to S Q R Ilyas a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, there is a growing influence of Wahabis in India. It is sad to see this and the moderate Muslim in India does not subscribe to this form of Islam which is very radical by nature. It is unfortunate that there are funds being pumped in from Saudi Arabia to ensure that the Wahabi culture spreads. However I do not see it taking over the Muslims in India as 90 per cent are opposed to this.

Meanwhile sensing the growing influence of Wahabi culture in India, several Mosques in India have made it compulsory to preach about the ill effects of this form of Islam. Every Friday there is a sermon in the Mosques speaking about the barbaric manner in which the ISIS is functioning. The Maulvis also tell the people that a group which continues blood shed during the holy month of Ramazan is anti Islamic and also declaring a caliphat without the approval of the Muslims is just not right.

Alert out for 'Indian-born jihadi fighting in Iraq'

A "lookout circular" has been issued against a 38-year-old man of Indian origin suspected to be fighting alongside the Sunni militant group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Iraq.

Indian airports and sea ports have been put on alert, should the man attempt to enter India. They have been given a description of the Tamil Nadu-born Singapore resident Haji Fakkurudin Usman Ali, who is also suspected to have participated in the civil war in Syria.

Officials said Usman Ali could be the first concrete example of a man with an India connection suspected to be involved in the ongoing jihadi war against the government in Baghdad. Several Indian agencies have been closely monitoring the developments in Iraq, but sources said they do not have any case against Ali in India, and cannot even issue a red corner notice against him.

However, following disclosures by Singapore authorities in January this year, the Indian agencies have collected details of Ali's contacts in India, all of whom have been put under watch.

According to the dossier provided by Singapore, Ali, who worked as a superstore manager in the city state, took up his religious mission first in 2007, and is said to have made his maiden visit to Syria in 2013. He is believed to have taken Singapore citizenship some years after he moved to that country.

Ali is believed to have been radicalised by another man from Tamil Nadu called Gul Mohammad Maraikar, who was deported to India recently. Gul Mohammad hails from Cuddalore, and was employed with a well known multinational firm in Singapore before he came under the scanner of intelligence agencies of that country.

Gul Mohammad is believed to have revealed that he had financed the trip to Syria of one of several radicalised youths from Tamil Nadu. His disclosures were crosschecked, and investigators discovered that Ali, who had been in touch with Gul Mohammad, had left for Syria in January via Turkey to participate in jihad.

Gul Mohammad was released after Indian authorities failed to press charges against him. He was, however, put under surveillance by local law-enforcement agencies in Tamil Nadu.

Following the arrest of alleged Indian Mujahideen operative Yasin Bhatkal last August, investigators had found evidence to suggest that two youths from Azamgarh in UP had gone to Afghanistan to join al-Qaeda, and were "fighting in Afghanistan-Pakistan border".

Sources in Indian security agencies said they did not have credible information on the number of Indian jihadis in Iraq and Syria, but they suspected that several youths from India had gone to Afghanistan and West Asia to take up the fight.

"Some of these youths have received military training, while others were inspired by propaganda online," a top counter terror official said.

It is right that IB seems rejuvenated and that is good news.
OTOH it is also worrying that IB's work is grabbing lot of eye balls (which shouldn't be the case ideally), to the extent that every second thing lands in the mainstream media and becomes a public debate.

I hope they will be able to maintain secrecy where it matters, ;) which by the way is slightly difficult to do in a democracy.

Indians like to announce everything. Case in point, the DRDO chieftains. Shouldn't they be developing weaponry in secrecy instead of grandstanding?

I think these last two big announcements regarding the ngos and the preachers, was done with that very intention, to create public opinion prior to action. As you know, these ngo types are very good about shouting and creating public stirs, same goes for sickularists.( "oh look Modi govt anti muslims, targetting preachers", or "Modi taking revenge on ngos for activism in Guj" and so on.)
Ideally the media should work for the interests of the country and commentate on actions of the IB, but we know how the media is.... So the IB makes an announcement and gives it's reasoning, before our sickular ngo loving media can start blaming the IB.

But yes, ideally the IB should be working in the shadows.
