    IAF Trainer Crashes Near Tambaram, Pilots Safe

    A trainer aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed this morning near Urapakkam on the outskirts of the city this morning. The two pilots ejected to safety and have been taken to a nearby hospital.

    The aircraft, a Kiran MK II from the IAF station at Tambaram was returning to base after a routine flight when in developed a technical snag. It then plunged into the Ayyanchery lake. The pilots were rescued from roof of a house in the adjoining VPK Nagar.

    Chennai, Jan 31 : Two pilots of the Indian Air Force (IAF) had a miraculous escape when they ejected to safety seconds before the trainer aircraft they were flying exploded and fell into the Ayyanchery Lake near Urapakkam on the city ourskirts this morning.

    Sources said Trainer C G Deepak and Trainee K P Singh left on a Kiran MK II from the Tambaram Air Force Station on a routine training sortie early this morning. At around 1035 hrs, when the plane was approaching Urapakkam, Deepak found the engine was emanating loud noise which was unusual. Sensing danger, he and Singh ejected to safety. Seconds later, the aircraft exploded and fell into the Ayyanchery Lake.

    Meanwhile, while Deepak landed on the ground and injured his hip while Singh fell on a electricity post. Fire and Rescue Services and police personnel rushed to the spot even as Coast Guard and IAF Helicopters arrived on the scene and airlifted the duo to hospital. Higher authorites have rushed to the spot and are supervising the removal of the debris from the water. The cause for the explosion was yet to be ascertained, sources added.

    Pilots are safe and thats good news, whereas about the aircraft it needs to fall someday or the other!!
