IA will not be getting Apaches. Talked to an IAF GC and he said that no way will IAF allow primary heavy attack helos to be flown by IAC.
the decision is already taken by MOD...IAF cant overrule MoD...

all this posturing by IAF is useless....

the decision is for future attack chopper acquisitions not for Apaches, they will remain with IAF.

Well any agressive stance by IAF on this topic by my guess is to get/obtain some sort of benefits,and/or extra funds, and nothing else. They cant expect to overrule the MOD,so it might be a sneaky way to grab hold of more funds. What do u think?

According to the Force magazine article

General features of Mi-17 V5 of IAF

The IAF-specific Mi-17v-5 will feature a loading ramp (instead of the traditional rear clamshells), a starboard door (which has necessitated moving the auxiliary power unit above the door), and a 'Dolphin'-shaped nose section under which a stabilised pod containing a thermal imager/tv is fitted. The entire airframe will feature a high degree of ballistics tolerance and crashresistance. It will also come equipped with an emergency flotation system. Its internal cabin volume will be sufficient for transporting up to 26 fully-equipped infantry soldiers for vertical envelopment operations.
Weapons Systems

For the air assault role, the Mi-17v-5 will come equipped with a wide array of external stores mounted on weapons racks on each side of the fuselage. For direct fire-support operations, the Mi-17v-5 will have six external hardpoints to carry four rocket pods like the S-5 rocket pods firing Uv-57-32 57mm unguided rockets, or B8v20-A rocket pods each housing 20 S-8 80mm rockets, or B13l rocket pods each carrying five S-13 122mm rockets, or four S-24 250mm rockets. The forward and aft hemispheres of the Mi-17v-5 will be protected by detachable PKt 7.62mm machine-guns with independent power supply and remote control circuits. The Mi-17v-5 will also come equipped with a new main rotor system comprising five blades built with carbon-reinforced fibre, main rotor hub with elastomeric hinges, and a modified swash plate. The helicopter will be powered by twin Klimov vK-2500P engines optimised for hot-and-high flight operations, and a new transmission and gearbox that are able to better exploit the 2,700hp available from the vK-2500Ps. The engines will provide 2,700hp for takeoff, 2,100hp for continuous flight and 1,900hp for cruise flight when carrying 26 troops

The army could use these to support the CI units by providing live feed from their flir cams and also provide heavy suppression to cover the advance of the ghataks/SF,it would help to minimise casualties.
I am not in favour of using ATGM, rockets on millitants in built up areas but mounted machine guns and or gun cannons could be used. It would in many cases allow the gunners to clear a lhouse without having to blow it up,especially in rural Kashmir where the houses are usually made of wood and flir cams can pick out heat signals through the thin walls

IAF inducts armed Mi-17 squadron in Rajasthan

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has enhanced its capabilities on the western border with Pakistan with the air chief, Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne inducting an armed Mi-17V5 helicopter squadron at Phalodi air base in Rajasthan on Monday.

The squadron will initially operate with 10 helicopters. A squadron's full strength is 16-18 helicopters. "These choppers fall in the armed helicopter category, with substantial and effective firepower and with the latest and more powerful engines that will greatly enhance their payload carriage capability," a defence source said.
The Mi-17V5 is an upgrade of the Mi-17 medium-lift helicopter. It is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and navigation systems and weather radar and is compatible with the latest-generation night vision goggles.

"With this, the helicopter can undertake all-weather, day-and-night operations in any kind of terrain," the source said.

Phalodi, 200 km from the border, was home to an air maintenance unit and was upgraded to an air base in 2010. This is considered a step towards bridging the gap in air defences in the western sector as it is strategically located between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, which are some 300 km apart.

"Phalodi is strategically and operationally very important for the IAF. Being closer to the western border, it would give an edge to the Indian forces in terms of early warning about any misadventures from across the border in a conflict scenario. The connectivity to air bases in north, northwest and western India will have an added advantage," the source said.
