Recap Mi 26:

India And Russia To Sign Contract For The Overhaul Of Mi-26 Choppers
November 02, 2017

India and Russia are set to sign a contract soon for the overhaul of three Mi-26 helicopters for the Indian Air Force, with Moscow also offering long-term maintenance service for IAF's Mi-17 choppers, a Russian official has said.

Russian Helicopters, a part of Rostec State Corporation, is negotiating the financial and technical details of the contract for these overhauls with the Indian side, the official said...

Wonder how Chinook will do these jobs. Sure it can carry underslung loads but internal space for trucks and JCB?
It can't and and it was clear that IAF puts itself in a bad position, since none of the US heavy lifters can do what the Mi 26 did for IAF so far. There was an interesting note in an interview with the Air Chief last year, when he mentioned operations of Chinooks next to Mi 26 and not the replacement. Wonder if we might see new Mi 26 after all?

We will.
Just like C-17 IAF will realise that it wants more Chinooks after production lines close. Then we will buy Il-476 and upgraded Mi 26 a few decades down the line.

Would be interesting to see what does IAF do when Il-76 life is over:p
Panagarh is getting new C130Js. Would have been a delight to see 10 new C17 parked beside:)

We already have seen the limitations of the C130 and C17, during Uthrakaant floods. The earlier has a too small cargo hold to carry trucks or machinery, the latter is too large and heavy to operate at all bases. So it was a Mi 26 that saved the day and lifted a fuel bowser "internally" to the airbase from which IAF was operating MI 17 helicopters, just as it lifted bulldozers and JCBs. The Chinook can do comparable only with external loads, which is limited by the weather conditions. So unless IAF gets an A400, AN70 or C-2, they are going to have a big transport problem when the Mi 26 is not available anymore.

No sirji
C130 is large enought :)
Probably runway damage or small runway or a remote location. So they landed Mi-26 first

On 3 April, Russian Helicopters confirmed, that the upraded Mi-26T2V heavy military transport helicopter has successfully completed preliminary flight testing. Condicted at the Mil Moscow Helicopter plant, the flight test confirmed initial airworthiness for the helicopter, which has a lift capaticy of 20 tonnes and features a modern NPK90-V2 avionics suites, that considerably enhances its controllability and enables it to be flown in automatic mode.

Mi-26 availability was very low in IAF service. IAF bought just 4 of these helicopters. Maintaining has been a nightmare. Plus Mi-26 is not very maneuverable.

It is not all about max load capacity BUT kind of loads that are needed to be lifted; and other salient features of the platform. My knowledge is only one Mi-26 is available ATM.

American military helicopters and transports are the best in the world. Absolutely no doubts here. Each Chinook is as good as two Mi-26 due to high availability plus uses much less fuel.
