DRDO wants new wind tunnel for hypersonic weapons


Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) is looking to commission a one meter diameter hypersonic wind tunnel to meet R&D requirements to support the design of futuristic hypersonic missiles and re-entry vehicles that require generation of large amounts of aerodynamic data. DRDL proposes to set up the facility at Hyderabad. The scope of work of Wind Tunnel System (WTS) includes design, realisation and integration.

Design, realisation and commissioning of high pressure system and vacuum system will be carried out in standalone mode by other vendors and will be made available to Wind Tunnel System vendor. Necessary civil works will be carried out by DRDL, which will also provide input power to the Wind Tunnel Building from LT sub-station and utility water at nearest point. DRDL has stipulated that it requires the facility to be up and running within 48 months.

Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL)? The HSTDV was to fly in 2013.

Ans] The HSTDV is a very strong thrust area of our future. But it is also a very high-technology area. It has a lot of challenges in the area of aerodynamics, hypersonic regime, etc. Unfortunately, the country does not have a hypersonic tunnel yet, so any test we want to do, we have to go abroad. That costs a lot of time, effort and money. The programme gets slowed down. The internal scramjet combustion is a totally new area. We have tremendous heat generation there, the sustenance of combustion, the air intake—they are all very critical. A number of studies have been done in these areas"¦. Our people are still sorting out some of these challenges, and you have to reach a height of 30 km with a Mach number of six plus. The current U.S. flight was with Mach 4.8 to 5.5. True supersonic comes at Mach six plus. So it was a tremendous achievement: first time scramjet system flying for over 200 seconds. We are also looking at that. It [the HSTDV flight trial] may take another year.

CHENNAI: Could India develop a hyperplane? Yes! Says India's noted scientist Sivathanu Pillai, who is working on the project to build a hyperplane which will use hydrogen based fuel and is 25 times faster than sound.

Speaking on the sidelines of being conferred with Lifetime Achievement Award by Rotary Club of Madras, Pillai says the success to hyperplane lies in the mastery of scramjet technology, a type of very fast jet engine.

United States and China have been successful with scram jet engine but the irony is they have yet to design materials which can withstand the heat generated from an object travelling at such high speed.

In a high speed aircraft, air friction cause extreme heating of the leading edge and temperature could be very high (Mach 5 generates 1,000 degree Celsius).

Currently, there is no technology which can withstand the heat, says Pillai, who is also former chief controller, Research and Development in Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO).

He said the Indian Space Research Organisation, DRDO and other organizations are working to develop Hyperplane.

The scientist also said that air-to-air variant of the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile is likely to take some more time. He said that the integration (of the missile) has been done with the aircraft. But there are many other aspects," he said.

The IDRW guys got it completely wrong. Mr Pillai said that Brahmos air to air was earlier planned to be launched by December 2014 which now will take sometime, and they misunderstood that timeline for HyperPlane launch:drunk::drunk::crazy::crazy:

India working on supersonic missile aircraft


After launching missiles from land and sea, India is in the process of developing suspersonic missile aircraft that would hit long range targets from air, a noted scientist said here today.

"It needs a lot of testing on the ground. You need to fly it on the ground and do the testing. The integration (of the missile) 'has been done' with the aircraft. But there are many other aspects. We are in the process", former chief controller, Research and Development in Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) A Sivathanu Pillai said.

To a query, he said it should be launched "within a year". Earlier the plan was to launch it before December 2014. But even if it happens within a year, it was to India's advantage as no other country has done it before, he told reporters.

Pillai, who was also former MD and CEO of BrahMos Aerospace, said the hyperplane was the future for India, using hydrogen-based fuel to make it travel 25 times faster than the speed of sound.

"When you are talking about hyperplane, you are talking about increasing the speed. Our idea is to use hydrogen-based fuel for Mark25, which will be 25 times faster than sound. Speed will be about 25,000 km per hour. That type of hyperplane we are conceiving...," he said.

On future defence programmes, he said the Indian Space Research Organisation and DRDO 'were' working on developing Hypersonic technology using 'Helium III' as fuel through 'Fusion' technology.

Helium III energy is available on the Moon and studies have proved that it can be be generated by fusion and not Fission technology, he said.

"By fission we are able to generate energy. For the future energy, you have to go for fusion technology. When you do fusion technology with Helium III you are able to get enormous power. But Helium III is not available readily. You have to mine it from the Moon, bring it and then purify it," he said.

"All these are under development. We are working on the Hypersonic technology. ISRO is working on it, DRDO is working on it," he said, adding it 'was' not an easy technology as may countries have tried it and failed.

Pillai, who was recently awarded the 15th Lal Bahadur Shastri Award by President Pranab Mukherjee, was here to receive the "Lifetime Achievement Award" presented by Rotary Club of Madras.

Lets hope DRDO don't tell such stories in front of modi, because once you do he will start asking for progress and status every month.
