Hypersonic, Next-Gen Missiles On BrahMos' Wishlist: Mishra

Aerospace scientists in Bengaluru and Moscow have quietly begun work on the hypersonic version of supersonic cruise missile BrahMos.

"They have been breathing only hypersonic for some time now," BrahMos Aerospace CEO and Managing Director Sudhir Kumar Mishra told OneIndia during an exclusive interview.

He said ahead of India, the United States of America (X51), Russia (GLL-AP-02) and China (WU14) have already made some attempts in unmanned scramjet demonstration flights, leading to their possible hypersonic flights in future. "May be in the next 7-12 years, we want to be the first country in the world to develop a hypersonic missile. We are confident," Mishra said.

He said that BrahMos Aerospace has indentified 13 focussed areas to undertake research and development to achieve hypersonic levels. "There are 14 research facilities in India now that can aid our hypersonic mission," he said.

To receive Sukhoi documents at Aero India

Mishra said that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will hand over the documents of the first Sukhoi fitted with the BRAHMOS air version.

"We have completed the electrical and mechanical integration of the missile with the Sukhoi. HAL did an exceptionally good job. I understand the second Sukhoi has been already handed over to HAL two days back for integrating another missile. The first flight-test from Sukhoi should happen in the next two months,"
    Mishra said.

He said a replica of the BRAHMOS launcher made by its facility in Thiruvananthapuram will be on display at Aero India 2015.

    BRAHMOS-NG will be a reality

Mishra said that both governments are keen to develop mini, next-generation BRAHMOS, being termed as BRAHMOS-NG.

"It is just an idea now. We want to work towards this dream. I believe in achieving small goals and moving ahead. I believe that BRAHMOS-NG will be a reality one day," Mishra said.

He said in future, five missiles (BRAHMOS-NG) could be fitted on to a Sukhoi. To a query, Mishra said the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) being planned by Aeronautical Development Agency will be capable of carrying the air version of BRAHMOS.

New BrahMos facility coming up in Rajashtan

Confirming the expansion plans of BrahMos to OneIndia, Mishra said that the new thought process mandates increasing the integration and production capacity. "We need to develop the capacity for life extension. In addition, we need to give product support as well. A new facility is coming up in Pilani (Rajasthan) which will act as a Product Support Centre," Mishra said.

BrahMos Aerospace is headquartered in New Delhi with an Integration Complex in Hyderabad and Nagpur. The BrahhMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd is the third wing situated in Kerala.

    Lean, mean smart organisation best

Mishra, who took over as the BrahMos CEO in August 2014, said that he has set his 'specific goals' on taking his team towards "achieving challenging and exciting tasks" ahead.

"The autonomy BrahMos Aerospace enjoys needs to be justified through an inspiring work culture linked to deliverables. I am keen to have transparency in all my areas of work. I am keen that BrahMos work partners (DRDO in India and NPOM in Russia) get the finest technologies available in the world today. The success of BrahMos is a result of the people-to-people relationship between India and Russia,"
    the top missile scientist said.

When asked whether BrahMos would add more man power, the soft-spoken, to-the-point captain of captain of BrahMos said that he believed in the lean, mean and smart philosophy of work.

Top Secret Fuel Formula to Accelerate Russia's Hypersonic Missiles
Ekaterina Blinova — Russia has invented special fuel formula enabling Russia's hypersonic aerial vehicles to fly faster than five times the speed of sound.

According to Deputy Defense Minister, Army General Dmitry Bulgakov, Russia is currently developing the new special fuel for hypersonic missiles that would enable it to exceed Mach 5.

Missiles reaching Mach 5 speeds (6,125 kilometers per hour) are categorized as "hypersonic"; they evade detection by an enemy's air defense system, complicating its ability to intercept the missile. Experts stressed that hypersonic weapons could drastically shift the world's military power balance. So far, global geopolitical players have recently joined the race aimed at boosting their hypersonic capabilities.

Unlike the US and China, who have concentrated on developing boost-glide vehicles, Russia and India are designing the so-called "hypersonic cruise missiles."
While a boost-glide air vehicle first lift to an extreme altitude and then coast down to a target re-entering the atmosphere, cruise missiles travel on a non-ballistic, extremely low altitude trajectory evading early warning radar systems.

It is worth mentioning that Moscow and Delhi have already unveiled a supersonic BrahMos, the world's fastest cruise missile that can reach the speed of Mach 3, and pledged to present a BrahMos-II hypersonic cruise missile soon. The creation of the new formula will evidently facilitate the process: due to its top secret recipe the fuel will accumulate enough energy to enable missiles to exceed Mach 5, according to experts.

In addition, Russian military research institutes have created new diesel fuel for the country's Arctic military forces, adapted for —65 C cold. The latest projects developed by Russian scientists also include synthetic oil, new aviation gasoline and carbon-based fuels, to name but a few.

Four Sukhoi's armed with 20 Brahmos NG can decimate a Naval fleet as well as suppress Enemy installations.

I heard Brahmos is being developed to make it a carrier so that it can carry multiple war heads to hit multiple targets. If that capability is also inducted with the increase of range and evasive manuievers the missile will become deadly :thumb:

Then there is a hypersonic Brahmos in line :thumb:

Interesting little article on need for supersonic / hypersonic missiles: BRAHMOS Hypersonic Cruise Missile - BrahMos.com

It seems if the US had something approaching Mach 2 in 1998, they'd gotten OBL and 9/11 might have been averted.

Brahmos-II Hypersonic Cruise Missile by 2023

A Russia-India joint cruise missile research group will develop the world's first hypersonic cruise missile by 2023, the company's CEO was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying Wednesday.

The company was founded in 2005 with the goal of building a modern cruise missile for the Russian and Indian air forces. Their first weapon, the BrahMos I, is now considered to be one of the fastest supersonic missiles in the world, traveling at speeds up to three times the speed of sound, or 3,675 kilometers an hour.

Hypersonic missiles, a high research priority for top military powers like China and the United States, travel beyond five times the speed of sound, or 6,126 kilometers an hour.

"For the moment we are conducting studies. A group of specialists is working on the project. I think that development will take from seven to eight years," said CEO Sudhir Kumar Mishra at the Aero India 2015 air show in Bangalore.

"This will make it the first hypersonic missile in the world," he added. :india: :russia:

Hypersonic weapons are the next step in missile development, promising to empower nations capable of developing them with the ability to strike targets in record time with devastating accuracy.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov said on Tuesday that Russia has created a new type of fuel that is highly energetic, and can propel a missile — presumably the BrahMos II — to hypersonic speeds.

Brahmos-II and the unstoppable Zircon Missile will have the same Scramjet Engine

Russia is expected to begin serial production of hypersonic missile Tsirkon or Zircon soon. The missile boasts of speed five times than that of speed of sound. Reports say the missile can travel with a speed of upto 4,600 mph or 7,400 km/h, which makes it almost impossible to be stopped.

Countries like the US and Britain, who have most powerful defence forces in the world, are already losing sweat over Russia's new missile defence system.

"State tests of Zircon are scheduled for completion in 2017 in accordance with the contract, and the missile's serial production is planned to be launched next year," a report carried out by Russian news agency TASS said quoting sources.

    US, BRITAIN WORRIED

Zircon, which can strike targets as far as 400 km away, is expected to be inducted by the Russia defence forces by 2022. With its enormous speed, Zircon is capable of evading the best anti-missile systems presently in use across the world. A report in The Independent said that UK's Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers would be unable to stop.

The Royal Navy's current Sea Ceptor missile system can only shoot down missiles travelling up to 2,300mph, the report said.
On the other hand, the US Navy is worried that Russia may fit Zircon to its nuclear-powered Kirkov warship.

    WHAT MAKES ZIRCON LETHAL

Zircon works on the scramjet technology to attain its hypersonic speeds. The missile uses air pressure for propulsion. A specially designed system pushes air from the atmosphere into the combustion chamber where the air is mixed with the on-board fuel to provide energy.

What makes Zircon lightweight and faster than other missiles is that it doesn't carry oxidizer. There are no fans or turbines to propel it, which essentially means less chances of any mechanical failure.

WHEN WILL INDIA HAVE ITS OWN HYPERSONIC MISSILE

Russia may have taken the lead in developing a hypersonic missile, but India is not far behind. India is developing a second generation BrahMos-II missile is collaboration with Russia. The missile will use the same scramjet technology that Zircon has.

The BrahMos-II is expected to have a range of 600 km. The missile is expected to be ready for testing by 2020

i do not think indian navy also had any better airdefence system either...

sure , pakistan would have got a missile travelling faster then 2300mph limit....

The problem is getting the launch vehicle up to Mach 3 so you don't need a heavy booster phase. Honestly the best launcher for a scramjet missile would be a Foxbat. It could fly fast enough to get air compression without an additional stage.

Only 5 Brahmos-M can be carried on SuKhoi. The Brahmos-II/.NG will weight pretty much the same as the current one 2.5 tonne each.
