Would methane be better?
Methane would be better and easier but it is a worst green house gas than co2.

Methane: The Really Scary Greenhouse Gas

International experts are alarmed. "Methane release due to thawing permafrost in the Arctic is a global warming wild card," warned a report by the United Nations Environment Program last year. Large amounts entering the atmosphere, it concluded, could lead to "abrupt changes in the climate that would likely be irreversible."

Methane (CH4) has at least 20 times the heat-trapping effect of an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide (CO2). As warmer air thaws Arctic soils, as much as 55 billion tons of methane could be released from beneath Siberian lakes alone, according to Walter's research. That would amount to 10 times the amount currently in the atmosphere.

CH4 + 2 O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O (ΔH = −891 kJ/mol (at standard conditions)

Most methane naturally generated goes into the atmosphere.

Methane generated for energy production would not, but CO2 would be a product.

So that ls in hydrogen's favor.

India’s first; and one of world’s largest Green Hydrogen Microgrid Projects to be set up at Simhadri

Precursor to large scale Hydrogen energy storage projects

NTPC has awarded a project of “Standalone Fuel-Cell based Micro-grid with hydrogen production using electrolyser in NTPC Guest House at Simhadri (near Visakhapatnam)”. It is India’s first Green Hydrogen based Energy Storage Project. It would be a precursor to large scale hydrogen energy storage projects and would be useful for studying and deploying multiple microgrids in various off grid and strategic locations of the country.

The hydrogen would be produced using the advanced 240 kW Solid Oxide Electrolyser by taking input power from the nearby Floating Solar project. The hydrogen produced during sunshine hours would be stored at high pressure and would be electrified using a 50 kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell. The system would work in standalone mode from 5PM in the evening to 7AM in the morning.

This unique project configuration is designed in-house by NTPC. It is a unique project for India and would open doors for decarbonising the far-off regions of the country like Ladakh, J&K etc., hitherto dependent on diesel generators. The project is in-line with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister for becoming carbon neutral by 2070 and making Ladakh a carbon neutral territory.

HYDROGEN FUEL FOR VEHICLES

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified G.S.R. 889(E) dated 16th September, 2016, for use of Hydrogen as an automotive fuel in the country. The specifications for Hydrogen for Internal Combustion Engine have been specified in Annexure IV-W of the said notification. 18% blend of Hydrogen with CNG

(HCNG) has been notified by this Ministry vide G.S.R. 585(E) dated 25th September, 2020. This Ministry vide G.S.R. 579(E) dated 23rd September, 2020 has notified safety norms regarding hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and its components.

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing Renewable Energy Research and Technology Development programme to support research in various aspects of renewable energy including inter-alia hydrogen based transportation and fuel cell development. The ongoing R&D projects on hydrogen and fuel cells are as under:-

  1. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has established a production plant for high purity hydrogen generation through biomass gasification.
  2. ARCI Centre for Fuel Cell Technologies, Chennai is setting up an integrated automated manufacturing line for producing 20 kW PEM Fuel Cell stacks.
  3. Dayalbagh Educational Institution has developed novel materials for Hydrogen production through Photo electrochemical splitting of water. Two patents were granted for materials developed under the project in 2021.
  4. National Institute of Solar Energy, Gurgaon, under the project to establish a Centre of Excellence on Hydrogen Energy, have procured electrolyzer and other equipment for augmenting the Green Hydrogen production capacity to demonstrate various applications including hydrogen fuelled vehicles.
This information was given by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

It is useful to see developments in the ground. Replacing the role of natural gas with hydrogen in fertilizer production is a no-brainer . Also ammonia can be used as a carrier for hydrogen .. requires only -33deg centigrade and 10 bar pressurisation to stay in liquid form.

All we need is to scale this up and also use it for industrial steel manufacturing which wasn't mentioned in the video. Many applications are possible today only which will easily save $ Billions annually.

India's hydrogen demand is 9 million tons this year which is going to increase in the coming years. Like everywhere else this hydrogen is produced by steam reforming from natural gas the price of which has skyrocketed since the Ukraine war. We need to replace this hydrogen produced from natural gas in steel and fertilizer industry first. And other industries will follow suit. After that we have to see whether it is economically feasible to run our public transport buses on Hydrogen. This will cut down on Hydrogen massively and so will the demand for fossil fuels resulting in less trade deficit.

Article clearly states green hydrogen was used in above plant
