Gangster-politician Suryanarayana Reddy alias Maddelachervu Suri, a key accused in former Andhra Pradesh minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Paritala Ravi's murder, died in a hospital after being shot at by unidentified assailants shot him in Hyderabad on Monday. The shooting
took place at Road No.13 in the posh Jubilee Hills area on Monday evening, police said.

Suri, a Congress leader involved in several criminal cases in the faction-ridden Anantapur district, was taken to Apollo Hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical.

Also an accused in the 1997 Jubliee Hills bomb blast case, he was released from jail a year ago.

Paritala Ravi, a former minister and leader of the state's main opposition TDP, was gunned down in Anantapur town Jan 24, 2005, allegedly by the followers of Suri.

The factional rivalry between the families of Ravi and Suri recently hit the national headlines following the release of "Rakta Charitra", a multilingual film by Ram Gopal Varma.

The movie starring Vivek Oberoi, Surya and Shatrughan Sinha in key roles, triggered a row with peace activists and NGOs opposing it on the grounds that it could lead to a fresh spell of violence.

Suri had earlier made an attempt to kill Ravi in 1997 at the Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad. Though Ravi escaped unhurt, 25 people were killed and many injured in the bomb blast.

Anantapur district is part of the backward Rayalaseema region, notorious for factional killings. Factions backed by political parties have been engaged in bloody battles for decades for supremacy in villages, especially in Anantapur district.

The faction members are notorious for the merciless manner in which they eliminate their rivals. More than 500 people have been killed in the factional violence over the past 15 years.

Firstly, Suri is not a politician. He never was. Secondly, he never ran a gang. Rather, a very small group of brokers who did property settlements in and around Hyderabad and Bangalore. He was under good care of the BJP government in Karnataka, he always knew going to AP under these circumstances is going to be very risky, yet he got deceived by a key aide who he kept as in charge of Hyderabad operations. His aide made sure Suri stepped out of Karnataka and into Hyderabad, where he became easy pickings for his enemies.

I don't think so. In factionalism, if you want to kill someone, it stays with you forever, you don't forgive/forget, you don't need a movie to remind you of what needs to be done. I don't think the hype saying that Rakthacharitra's "personal bodyguard imposter killing" method is much of an inspiration to Suri's murder, either.

The rule of the thumb is that Suri should not have come to Hyderabad (stepped out of Bangalore), period. His enemies' wetworkers would have killed him using any means necessary.

Suri wasn't a typical criminal, he was a Rayalaseema factionalist. In factionalism, nothing ever ends with the death of someone. Someone's death always has a cascading effect, it breeds more factionalism. Suri announced that he was leaving the path of factionalism, and that he desired a peaceful (if not prosperous) life, that he wanted his son to grow up in the urban mainstream.

Therefore, this murder is a tragedy. It's only going to invoke more factionalist sentiments between two of AP's major caste-factions in Rayalaseema.

Suri death doesn't seem to be caused by faction feuds. But may be due to his meddling in the real estate mafia and because of his followers greed. This seems to be a shot in the arm for Paritala Sunitha
