HMS Ocean reportedly offered for sale to Brazil

According to local media in Brazil, the Ministry of Defence have offered HMS Ocean for sale to the South American country.

The article, found here, claims that Brazilian officials believe that the price seemed “reasonable” and the Brazilian Navy are examining the prospect “with cautious optimism”.

HMS Ocean is the UK’s only helicopter carrier and the fleet flagship of the Royal Navy. She is designed to support amphibious landing operations and to support the staff of Commander UK Amphibious Force and Commander UK Landing Force.

According to someone we spoke to currently on-board the vessel, there are rumours that this is one of a number of possibilities:

“People have been talking about what will happen to the ship after 2018, there were rumours that the vessel might be sold to another navy but there’s been no mention of what navy that might be.”

The helicopter carrier was constructed in the mid-1990s and commissioned in September 1998.

In November 2015, the MoD confirmed that HMS Ocean is to be decommissioned in 2018 with no like-for-like replacement.

This comes as the Brazilian Navy have decided to abandon the refit of the aircraft carrier Sao Paulo and decommission the vessel after a series of technical issues and accidents.

Rectification costs are understood to be a major factor in this decision.

The Sao Paulo is a Clemenceau class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1963 by the French Navy as Foch and was transferred in 2000 to Brazil, where she became the new flagship of the Brazilian Navy. The earlier intention of the navy was that the vessel would continue in active service until 2039, at which time the vessel would be nearly 80 years old.

IHS Janes reported that during its career with the Brazilian Navy, São Paulo has suffered from ‘serviceability issues and has never managed to operate for more than three months at a time without the need for repairs and maintenance’.

It is no surprise therefore that the navy have now announced, as reported by DefesaNet, that the ship will be ‘demobilised and subsequently decommissioned’.

We have contacted the Ministry of Defence and await comment.

@IBSA

My take, Brazil hasn't recovered economically especially after 2 yrs(2015 & 2016) of negative growth how ever slight positive (.5) growth projected for 2017 might look like things are changing, but I feel that let Brazil economy revive....

I still remember the story of SAO PAULO, which was put aside due to lack of maintenance funds....

Recent purchase of Gripen NG has put enough strain on Brazil Military budget, I think that purchasing HMS Ocean and refurbishment of it is going to be even more costly....

When we talk about Aircraft Carrier, we should talk about Carrier Battle Group which is even more expensive to operate...

It takes more than $6 millions/day for CBG(INS Vikramadiya) to operate

If HMS Ocean is purchased, then Brazilian Navy will be forced to purchase additional ships and naval fighters to protect HMS Ocean

I think there is no formidable threats for Brazilian Navy and the reason for purchase of HMS Ocean is not necessary (this is my opinion only)

@IBSA In my opinion, Brazil should go under a cool down period till economy kicks off once again. When it does, Brazil should look for something like Juan Carlos class.

You will end up spending a fortune to keep the rusting HMS Ocean afloat and still may not get much out of it.

I also think to buy HMS Ocean isn't a good thing. Really, Brazil is facing economical difficults that limits our expenditures in Defense. In actuality the biggest part of our military budget will to pay pensions and human costs. We need to review this, but the officials dont want, and none politicans have balls to do it.

Furthermore, Brazil havent helicopters as many as the needed to utilize the plane rightly, nor even a doctrine suited for it. Our military doctrine is basically a defensive thinking.

Brazilian government authorises purchase of UK’s HMS Ocean
Santiago Rivas
- Jane's Defence Weekly
05 December 2017

Brazil’s Ministry of Defence on 1 December authorised the navy to begin efforts to purchase the UK Royal Navy’s HMS Ocean landing platform helicopter (LPH).

The Brazilian Navy requested this authorisation in early 2017 after a decision to retire its NAe São Paulo aircraft carrier, and after the Royal Navy said the LPH could be available for sale once decommissioned in March 2018.

Ocean would be inspected by Brazilian Navy officers before that, while authorisation from the US government is also being requested as the ship has some US-built components.

The Brazilian Navy’s plan is to finish the deal in 2018, overhaul the ship in 2019, and have it operational by 2020.

so are you moding it ???? or are you guys buying it as is
Brazil is dealing with UK if is possible ship to pass by a general manutence before he comes to the country.

We also have some Lynx copters being upgrade. If the service's dates to coincide, the copters can be transported in HMS Ocean.

84 million pounds or 114 million USD. Don't think its replacement for Sao Paulo. They might use it as a LHD. They also have a Fourde class LPD from france. Brazil like chile has been adept at picking up second hand ships from european navies with plenty of life left in them. Indian Navy still doesn't have a LHD and no news about the 4 new LPD's.

It was an opportunity's purchase. By the price and ship's lifetime, this acquisition was a good deal.

Furthermore our president Temer could be to please the military. Temer has a so low popularity. Around 90% of people dont approves his gov. Former President Dilma Roussef when she was impeached she had higher popularity than Temer. Who holds this man on the power? Not the people. Basically Temer has support of military, since he dont affect their rights, and his political allies in the Congress.
