ISLAMABAD: The federal government appears to be inching closer to an all-out offensive against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its affiliates after it has given the go-ahead for 'preemptive strikes' against militant hideouts in the tribal areas, officials said on Tuesday.

Under the new plan that seeks to dismantle the TTP infrastructure, the army will not only conduct 'punitive strikes' but also act swiftly against militants if intelligence information confirms they are planning terrorist attacks, disclosed a top security official.

The official, who requested not to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue, told The Express Tribune that the civil and military leadership have now decided that the 'state will not tolerate' any more violence from the TTP or any other group.

"The monopoly over the use of force is with the state and there will be no compromise on the country's security," the official added. He said all options were still on the table but the military would now "hit back if militants do not halt their terrorist activities".

With the approval of a new strategy, the military is expected not only to continue airstrikes but also intensify such 'surgical strikes' in coming weeks.

Some sources claimed that the ongoing airstrikes were in fact the start of an unannounced targeted operation against the TTP.

It is also learnt that airstrikes may lead to a ground offensive probably by the end of March or in April if the TTP refuses to announce unconditional ceasefire.

Over hundred suspected militants have been killed and several others injured so far since the military targeted militants' strongholds in the tribal areas particularly in North Waziristan Agency. The army launched air strikes after the TTP beheaded 23 Frontier Corps personnel, who were abducted by militants in 2010.

The killings compelled the government to pull out of the fragile talks with the TTP and made it clear that the process would only resume once the militant group announces an unconditional ceasefire.

The official claimed that the recent strikes had achieved great success against the TTP because their hideouts were targeted after 'pinpoint' intelligence.

Pakistani fighter jets kill 30 militants - The Times of India

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani fighter jets and helicopter gunships on Tuesday bombarded hideouts of the Taliban militants in the Waziristan region, killing at least 30 militants.

The attacks on the hideouts in Waziristan tribal regions were the fourth in a series of air strikes by the Pakistan air force (PAF) since February 20.

At least 30 militants were killed in the air strikes in the region stretched between south and north Waziristan, Geo News reported citing a security official.

The fighter jets have been pounding the hideouts since the government's efforts to engage the Pakistani Taliban in peace negotiations failed last week.

The militants hideouts in Shawal valley and Dattakhel areas of Waziristan were attacked where their training centres are located.

Most wanted Taliban commander killed in North Waziristan - The Times of India

ISLAMABAD: Unknown gunmen shot dead senior Pakistani Taliban commander Asmatullah Shaheen along with his three comrades in their stronghold of North Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border on Monday.

Shaheen was ambushed as he drove through Darga Mandi area, sources said. Three others in the vehicle also died on spot. The attackers managed to escape unscathed.

"Unidentified gunmen in another car shot and killed Shaheen as well as the driver and guards," Reuters quoted a family member as saying.

No group has claimed responsibility for his killing. But sources suggest he could have been murdered for his rivalry with Khan Said Sajna, another Taliban commander.

Shaheen was a key member of the Taliban's council and was on the Pakistan army's list of 20 most wanted commanders. The government had announced Rs10 million bounty on his head in 2009.

He was briefly the Pakistani Taliban interim leader after its chief Hakimullah Mehsud was killed last year. Shaheen earned infamy after he claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on a religious procession in 2009 that 44 people in Karachi.

In December 2011, terrorists under his command had abducted 23 soldiers. Although seven soldiers managed to escape their custody but the remaining abductees were brutally killed.

The TTP terrorists will be driven out of thr country in time. When USA first abandoned Afghanistan in 1987 many Mujhahideen were sent to Maqbuza Kashmir to fight jihad against Hindu attrocities. Guess where they will go now once USA leaves Afghanistan?

Clap you hands to salute dead IA(F) servicemen, I'm sure there will be many.

LOL Pakis are following the wrong strategy... just "killing" Talibunnies would not help in the long run.

Pakis need to root out the cause which is their fault ie. following FAKE EXTREMIST "Islam", sheer hate towards India and treating Afgans like slaves.

What's funny is that targeted drone strikes produced only collateral damage while PAF "flatening" the area is killing only Talibs.

actually if there is any truth in the claims of number of Talibs killed by Pak, then it only further exposes their double game of providing sanctuary as it suits them and killing them coz they killed 23 soldiers.

Nobody can trust Paki word one but either way.
