Re: Main Battle Tanks and Armour Technology

.

It is a historical fact that Poles and Ukrainians are more a brothers than Russians and Ukrainians, as Ukraine was part of Poland for a relatively longer time period, and there is more commonality between Poles and Ukrainians than Russians and Ukrainians.
I understand the error Damian - he collided with a modern outlining of the history. Indeed, now relations between Ukraine and Poland are very good. But these two neighbors fought all their history, starting from the 14th century to 1939. And Poland has never not among the Ukraine as a friend, and acted as an occupier. Mr. Damian communicates on one of the Ukrainian military site where there were a lot of Pro-Western-minded people. This is why he it created the illusion of that Ukrainians closer brothers poles, and not to the Russians. It's in the 20th century - the religion gave place to the other values. But Ukrainians are Orthodox, but the Poles - Catholics,, who tried to draw their faith in the Ukrainian people. Therefore, there were constant conflicts. Someone who is closer seen from the statistics. 82% of Ukrainians consider Victory Day (may 9) the great feast day.

NATO not wanted in Ukraine? :D

Did you ever spoke with young Ukrainians, they wish to be closer to NATO than to Russia that taken their soveregnity and attempted to destroy Ukrainians as a nation.
Only 19% of Ukrainians want to integration with NATO. Ukraine wants to remain nonaligned state.

Cossacks have been part of Ukraine for centuries. So, the term "Ukrainian" as in present day Ukraine includes Ukrainians, Russians, Tatars, Cossacks, as well as other minorities.
The term "Ukrainian" was invented by nationalists in Austro-Hungarian empire at the turn of the century. Before that Ukrainians identified themselves as Orthodox Slavs (ie basically same as Russians). Also I am told Ukrainian language is mutually intelligible with Russian. Are there any Russian or Ukrainian members who would like to enlighten us?

Re: Main Battle Tanks and Armour Technology

You do not know nothing about us, neither about Ukrainians Czech or Slovaks, for us Soviet Union was a criminal state that done genocides to us, and other horrible attrocities, and we do not want it or Russia.
For Ukraine, the USSR was not a criminal state. He transformed it from an agrarian - in high-tech country.

Well history is a difficult in central Europe.

My grandfather and grandmother had remembered erly 1930s on polish ester borders and tousents live-skeletons escaping from soviet ukriainian republic.
I agree - the Holodomor was. But it was not only the Genocide of the Ukrainians, but the deliberate destruction of the peasantry (the Ukraine, southern Russia and Kazakhstan).

Oh but this is very wrong.

Ukrainian cossacks were not allways an enemy of the Crown, in fact they were perceived as loyal and good citizens, if we can call it this way.

The problem started, in a really silly way, it was because Cossacks aspired to be the elite of Ukraine as a province of the Crown, it made tensions and there were several smaller, let's call them insurections of smaller Cossack "warlords", this forced the crown to estabilish a law, which was not completely fair, especially from Cossacks perspective, this lead to the big insurrection of the Chmielnicki.

It was because King Vladislav IV prepared a war, and started preparations in which Cossacks had very important role to participate, it was something that pleased Cossacks, reasons are obvious, however plans were jeopardized by some part of nobility that seen a threat in Kings actions.

There were also some uncertain action on King court back then, in which Chmielnicki take part, and later he clearly stated that the war he started, was not against king and crown but against some part of nobility.

In the end it was not really a war between Polish and Ukrainians, but between two sides of nobility, if we can consider Cossacks as sort of Ukrainian nobility back then.

Also very wrong is to take here in to consideration religion. The Commonwealth as this great country was called, never was divided by religious differences, in fact Commonwealth was at that time, probably the only country, when any sort of religion was not attacked by anyone.

In fact during that time, Commonwealth was multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious country, we had catholics, protestants, orthodox, jewish and even muslim citizens. There was even a King's law that ethnic and religious minorities were protected, law was estabilished in miedieval era, by king Casimir III The Great.

I think Akim that you just believe in lies that were widespread in educational system of the Soviet Union, to convience Ukrainian population that Commonwealth and 2nd Republic were unfrindly to Ukrainians. Which is not truth.

A British historian, profesor Norman Davies not only written several books about this subject, but there is also very good explanation of what Commonwealth was on YouTube.

These are facts.

But people outside this part of Europe must understand that for decades, history had been rewriting by communists to justify their goals.

One of their goals was to discredit 2nd Republic and create more animosities between nations that earlier created the 2nd Republic and commonwealth.

I actually agree with prof. Davies that today, due to World War II and later actions of communists, we lost something unique in the scale of Europe, perhaps even whole world. We lost that unique multiethnic, multireligious state.

Of course I do not say, hey we should be a one single country right now, Ukrainians, Bellarusians and others deserve their own states and full freedom to what should they do. However there is an obvious problems that Russia dislikes for example Polish support to the Ukrainian "Orange Revolution".

Yermak's Conquest of Siberia. A vivid painting by Vasily Surikov.

The Russian expansion into the East began in 1580, when Yermak Timofeyevich invaded the Siberian Khanate, and within two years had captured their capital of Qashliq (modern Tobolsk). Using the extensive Siberian river networks, and spurred by the highly profitable fur trade, the Russians reached the Pacific Ocean by 1639, and virtually all of Siberia was under their nominal control. In 1689, the Russians signed their first treaty with the Chinese, the Treaty of Nerchinsk, which delineated the border between Russia and China in the Far East. However, it was not until the early 20th century, following the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad, that there was any substantial demographic movement of Russians into Siberia.

And how do you know that integration with Russia is in best interest of these nations? What alternative have Kazakhstan or Bellarus? Non really, and they can peacfully give up to Russia, or have bigger problems, just like Georgia, from which Russia stole land in form of South Ossetia and Abkhazia republics/provinces.
.
According to surveys 55% of Ukrainians want to integrate into the Customs Union. I for economic integration in Europe, but I don't like, when out of there we put forward political conditions, not taking into account our mentality.

Of course, you have no counterargument, neither you know history, this more distand and this more recent.

The fact is however that Ukrainians are shifting towards west, because west guarantees independence, Germany and France have no interest and are not close to Ukrainine, to make it their subject, while Poland and other close neighbours of Ukraine wish cooperation and partnership, however current political elites in Russia desire nothing but absolute control over it's smaller neighbours, especially former soviet republics.

Even current Ukrainian president is not very happy about perspective of further integration with Russia, because it means direct subjection under Putin and Russias political elites.

And of course younger generations in these countries. As far as you wish to dismiss importance of younger people, it is a fact that they will decide and build future, not you.

Even inside Russia, young people are tired of old fools like you, old soviet hyprocrites with their phobia towards USA, NATO or western Europe.
Here I agree. Unfortunately, the modern Russia wants more political dependence of Ukraine, and the West is also sings votes of the Sirens from the "Iliad" of Homer. And there may destroy high-tech industry in Ukraine - is as dangerous competitors.

This is half, and the question is if they are young or old people, for old people Soviet Union might have been paradise, for young people not nececary union with Russia is a good and desired thing.

For Ukraine, the USSR was not a criminal state. He transformed it from an agrarian - in high-tech country.
And for what price? You really believe that genocide was a good price payed to become high-tech country?

In such case we can justify any genocide, hey Jews should be thankfull to Nazis that they allmost murdered all of them.

Yeah, genocide is the way to success!

Also I am told Ukrainian language is mutually intelligible with Russian. Are there any Russian or Ukrainian members who would like to enlighten us?
Both are similiar, but not same, and Ukrainian have some words at least, very similiar or same to Polish for example, others are unique, and some are same or similiar to Russian.

Only 19% of Ukrainians want to integration with NATO. Ukraine wants to remain nonaligned state.
You do not know exactly how many wants to join or not, it is immposible to meassure what is desired by whole population.

Truth, both Russia and Western Europe can endanger Ukrainian industry, this is why I think we both agree, that regional alliance bettwen Ukraine, Poland and other countries like Slovakia or Czech Republic, will mostly benefit us, noone else.

Ukraine have some solutions that we do not have, we have some that Ukraine do not have, these can be exchanged and shared, and we have stronger economy. Closer cooperation will benefit all of us. And this is the point.

The Russian Empire was founded when Kazan became a vassal. Until then, Kazan was the heart of the Empire. I hope you understand the Empire-Vassal relationship. The founding of the Empire is different from founding of the polity, and national identity. The identity is still, "Rus."

Anyway, I will request @Akim, to give us a history of the Kievan Rus.
The Russian Empire was established in Moscow. But the beginning of the Russian state was laid in Kiev. It is Kyivska Rus unite all Russian principalities, and saved Europe from the invasion of the Tatar-Mongols.

Ukraine (Ukraina) is originated from the word «outskirts (okraina)» of Russia.

Poland–Ukraine relations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is rather reliable, source of informations about reliationship between Polish and Ukraine.

As we can see, there are obvious problems, mostly based on unfortunate historical events, however these did not destroyed this reliationship and we can see a positive development like the LITPOLUKRBRIG initiative.

Hopefully this will lead to deeper cooperation, and in the end, to the desired, closer alliance between states of the region, which can be a counterbalance against Russia and EU core states.

Everything began much earlier. With the Ukrainian city of Lviv in 1349 seized the Polish king.

No, not seized, King have right to the city based on inheritance agreement with Bolesław Jerzy II of Mazovia that owned that city at this time, this means in 1340. In 1350 Lubart, prince of Lithuanian Dutches destroyed the city, that was rebuilded by Polish king Casimir III The Great in 1356, what is interesting is that king written in document that gives city it's rights a law, that all minorities, religions will be protected by crown.

Source - Karol Grunberg, Bolesław Sprengel Trudne sąsiedztwo, Warszawa 2005, s. 31.

BTW, @Damian, how nice of you to quite from the Wikipedia.
I do not have at this time, direct access to better sources in books.

@Akim is right. Ukraine means "border land." The new meaning of Ukraine is an invention, and is intended to drive a wedge between the Russian and Ukrainian people.
Not nececary, and how do you know that "border land" is correct, do you know the old slavic languages? Are you specialist in this subject, or you are just trolling?

It is an industrial South-East of the country, which produces 75% of the Ukrainian production.

Then again, Russia might not be interested in to keeping this industry running.

Take in to consideration that for Russia, Ukrainian industry is competition, especially military industry, it is in best interest of Russia to shut down this industry, and instead promote their own products.

Desire to connect with Russia is shortsighted.
