Virbhadra Singh to contest Himachal Pradesh polls

    Last Updated: Saturday, October 06, 2012, 15:10

New Delhi: Breaking its tradition of not allowing a sitting Member of Parliament (MP) to contest an Assembly Election, the Congress on Saturday gave green light to Virbhadra Singh for contesting the upcoming polls.

Himachal Pradesh Congress president and former Union minister Virbhadra Singh will contest from Shimla (Rural).

A meeting of the party's Central Election Committee headed by Sonia Gandhi had to decide on the nominations for the 68-member Assembly in the state.

While Congress has finalised candidates for 49 seats, the final list of all the candidates will be released by evening, as per reports.

A meeting of the State Election Committee headed by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was held here yesterday and a meeting of the Central Scrutiny Committee was held today, where prominent leaders from the state, including PCC president Virbhadra Singh, and the party's incharge of Himachal Affairs Birender Singh were present.

Various leaders from the state have reportedly evolved a consensus on candidates for 45 Assembly seats, including 19 sitting MLAs, sources said. More names are likely to be cleared soon after discussions among state leaders.

Congress is seeking to oust the BJP government headed by Prem Kumar Dhumal.

Mankotia's return to Cong biggest surprise of state politics

    Gaurav Bisht
    Shimla, October 07, 2012

Politics makes strange bed fellows. Former tourism minister Vijay Singh Mankotia's joining hands with Pradesh Congress Committee chief Virbhadra Singh has come as the biggest surprise of Himachal politics.
Political circles in the state are abuzz with the talk that what really
transpired between Singh and Mankotia behind closed doors. Questions are being asked that whether Mankotia's patch up with Singh will help the party in returning to power or is it just another marriage of convenience between two political leaders.

Is Mankotia's entry into the party a tactical move made by Virbhadra to checkmate his newest rival former transport minister GS Bali or the last-minute compromise to wriggle him out from the court cases? Mankotia, who released a compact disc containing telephonic conservation of Singh, his wife Pratibha Singh with Indian Administrative Service officer Mohinder Lal, has so far not revealed the source. Rumour mills had it that Mankotia was prompted by a high-profile political leader......

Election panel bans carry bags with Atal Bihari Vajpayee pictures

    Gaurav Bisht, Hindustan Times
    Shimla, October 08, 2012

Chief election commissioner VS Sampath on Sunday ordered withdrawal of carry bags bearing pictures of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which were being distributed cost free at the government-run PDS ration depots in election-bound Himachal Pradesh.

It was in August that Himachal chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal had announced to distribute carry bags free of cost along with essential foodgrains being provided under the public distribution system (PDS). The state’s food and civil supplies department had printed 16 lakh bags carrying Vajpayee’s photo, and the distribution began on August 15.

Sampath’s order came following complaints from Congress representatives when the EC team was in Shimla to review arrangement for polls. Representatives from the BJP, Congress, BSP and CPM were present at the meeting convened by the commission. Sampath asked chief secretary Sudripto Roy to withdraw the carry bags with immediate effect.

Sampath salso noted that there was a complaint from parties regarding one-sided reporting from Doordarshan, Shimla. He said instructions have been given to the information and broadcasting ministry to ensure impartial working of the Doordarshan Kendra.

The CEC said the commission will also look into the complaint about the ongoing recruitment process in Himachal Pradesh University and if required, necessary action will be initiated after examining the situation.

Robert Vadra and VBS' scams seems to have had an effect.

What about the effect of Nitin Gadkari's shenanigans?

    Any news on that?

For the benefit of the reader, I am posting the videos of the poll:

If what this poll is saying is true, and yes, BJP has done way better than most of the previous governments, then going into the poll tomorrow, the BJP does hold the upper hand.

    Part: I

    Part: II

What does the pollsters have to say?

    Who is to win?

Hopefully the pollsters are not indicating that the scamsters will rule the roost.

But then, who is beyond a scam of two - the lifeblood of Indian politics.

They are giving a tie for now.

I think the BJP might just have an outside chance, dad thinks it will be the Congress with slight majority.

Sir, Virbhadhra Singh has a stature in Himachal politics like none other. The only reason Congress has been able to present itself with a decent chance this time is all because of him. The Congress HC was very keen on removing him, if Congress wins, he will get to be the CM. Corruption by and large is a non issue here. In case BJP does go on to win, Dhumal would have done a wonder for them, and at least within the BJP here he would have eclipsed Shanta Kr by quite a margin then.

    It's the poll day today.

Himachal is not a big state, and its always a fight between congress or bjp.

Bihar, and Gujarat are the big states whose results will influence national politics

Gujarat is also not a big state. It gives only 26 seats to LS. It's due to Modi, who can influence national politics.
