I hope they start on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route soon. Earlier I was sceptical about this project as a lot of funding was required. World bank, ADB and IMF have their limitations as they have to also support more weaker nations. But Japan has a lot of money with not much to invest within their own country. The actual interest rates in Japan are so low that any loan that they give can be considered as a soft loan. They will be providing funds for these project at 1.5% interest. Beat that.

This in itself helps the project becoming viable. Interest burden while undertaking such big project is a big problem. Such project sometimes take over 7-8 years to complete. Till the time the project is not over there are no returns. Also the return are slow. Therefore, getting funds at low interest rates is very important.

If we look at the state of affairs of IR, it's a mess, a bigger mess financially. The IR, the way it is functioning right now is a huge and an unnecessary strain on the exchequer, unfortunately when a sane voice like Dinesh Trivedi emerges, we know what happens.

With a HST in place, the IR is possibly looking at a business from where a sustainable business model can be created and a constant profit making venture over a period of time. You don't need to subsidize, the market will pretty much dictate the pricing, and over all a healthy business model can take shape, at least that is what I speculate.

A few concerns I have. What sort of a role will the private players play? What sort of a stake will they be allowed? With the way our bureaucracy works, be that of any department, wont it be better that HST is allowed to be run by private corporate houses, IR becomes the facilitator and creator, and they cash on that facilitation and creation, than be the one which has a stake in everything and runs/does everything? If the IR can limit itself to just a few operations and let the private enterprises do the rest, yes, it is workable.

Is there a market for such a facility, I think there is. Flights from delhi and Bombay are regularly getting delayed during the peak hours, the state of affairs of Indian aviation isn't great, quite a few want to avoid air travel but don't have a decent replacement option, HST can help decongest cities, and much more. If HST can create a market share of around 5-10% of the total daily passenger traffic of IR and India aviation, I would imagine the investment would come out as a necessity than as a status symbol.

On a similar note, are expressways a status symbol or a necessity? Are the metros and the monorails a status symbol or a necessity? Are fancy and modern airports a status symbol or a necessity? I think in all the three examples the latter option, of necessity, has been proven to be true. Can the metros and monorails or the expressways or the modern and fancy airports be compared with HST? If HST can garner the market share, and reap profits, sure a comparison worth it.
One thing is a given: ANY high speed train will NOT receive the heavy passenger subsidies that "regular" passenger trains now receive. Any high speed train will be priced such that the equivalent of 2nd class on present "regular" trains will not exist on the high speed trains. The cost of the construction will be such that the fares will be set to a level that the poor and others that can ride in coach or 2nd class on regular trains will not be able to use the HS trains. People will scream unfair but if the HS trains were to even have "coach" classes, then the revenues from the operations of the HS trains will be such that the interest ALONE on the loans for the HSR system will not be met. In short: the HS trains will be pretty much available only to the relatively well off and better.....

OH, and with the collapse of the rupee, rest assured that the actual construction of ANY high speed rail system in India can be considered on hold indefinitely; whatever announcements you hear from ANY government or railway ministry official.

What happened in China cannot be compared to India. Half the stuff the Chinese ( read CPC) does is to show off to the world, to show it has "advanced and arrived". Then there is this necessity for propaganda as well and then there is a necessity to keep spending to keep the GDP up. Remember the Ghost Towns?
That MAY be well and true but according to the New York Times, the high speed trains that China has built and are operating are more successful than even the most optimistic prediction. Plus the trains have produced economic benefits that no one had foreseen. Google "New York Times high speed rail China".

never or very far far date from now.bullet trains because of their speed will travel in a near straight line or a line with less curves.its technically not possible in india because of political pressure of civil suits if railway wants to take a persons land.

have we ever seen a rail route in india without any curvatures??

They seem very much feasible to me. I mean, they are all in high population density areas and these areas see some of the highest rail traffic in the country.
Population matters less than money. Chennai-Bangalore is feasible. So is Mumbai-Pune. These routes which are in the map and have "high population" are very poor and though they can generate the highest rail traffic in the country for Indian railways, they are not capable of patronizing expensive bullet trains.

And you are saying that because you have conducted a detailed feasibility study?

Time will tell what course things take, but I do have good knowledge on India and Indian demographics. That, coupled with first hand experience traveling in some of those areas, and traveling in "bullet trains"/high speed trains in various parts of the world, leads me to believe what I do.

Anyway, let us see how things go - time will tell.

> We need one Bullet Train from Bangalore City to Bangalore Airport
> Bangalore to Chennai
> Mumbai to Pune

I'm sure, there are other cases for more trains.

Railway Minister Launches High Speed Rail Corporation of India Limited (HSRC) - See more at: Railway Minister Launches High Speed Rail Corporation of India Limited (HSRC), Odisha Current News, Odisha Latest Headlines

New Delhi: The Minister of Railways Shri Mallikarjun inaugurated a two day international technical conference on "High Speed Rail Travel; Low Cost Solution" in New Delhi today. While addressing the conference, the Railway Minister said that India's primary focus has been to provide a mass mode of safe, reliable and affordable transport, being the largest passenger Railway in the world, it is a natural aspiration of the people of this country that Indian Railways provide them high speed rail travel. Shri Kharge said that most countries consider high speed capability to be in the range of 250 to 300 kmph which requires a dedicated track with fencing and can be prohibitively costly. For a country like ours track fencing also has its own set of associated issues. Thus, leveraging Rolling stock technologies may provide a lower cost solution to meet the immediate needs of achieving speeds of 160 to 200 kmph and that too on the existing track. For speeds above 200 kmph the costlier and time consuming solution of providing a separate dedicated track with fencing becomes inescapable. Therefore, the focus of this conference is to consider achieving higher speed trains in the range of 160 to 200 kmph with marginal inputs in the existing infrastructure, besides given the financial constraints and issues related to land acquisition and track fencing, as an interim step, the Railway Minister said. Wishing all the success to Conference, Shri Kharge said that the deliberations in this conference between the various stakeholders will bring about a better understanding of the underlying technology issues and make higher speed rail travel in India a reality. The Railway Minister formerly launched High Speed Rail Corporation of India Ltd. (HSRC), a subsidiary of Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) and also revealed the logo of HSRC that has been designed by National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Addressing the conference, Shri Arunendra Kumar, Chairman, Railway Board, said that Indian Railways has undertaken pre-feasibility studies of seven high speed corridors. A preliminary study for Mumbai-Ahemdabad route has estimated its cost to be around Rs. 65,000 crore. He said that towards this purpose the Institute of Rolling Stock Engineers (IRSE) with support from Indian Railways and RITES is organising this International Technical Conference. The themes of the conference will include: World overview of High Speed technologies, High speed Bogie Technologies, Importance of Train Dynamics for high speed operation, Wheel sets for high speed operation, Lightweight coach Technologies, Track & infrastructure, Signalling technologies, Traction related issues, brake systems, Crashworthiness Manufacturing and maintenance aspects specific to High Speed operation and Safety. Speaking on the occasion Shri Satish Agnihotri, Chairman of HSRC and CMD of RVNL said that HSRC has been formed to develop High Speed Rail (HSR) Corridors in India to run passenger trains at speeds upto 350 km per hour. It will undertake the project activities such as preparation of project related studies, preparation of the technical standards for HSR Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor and any other corridor decided by the Government. It will provide support to Ministry of Railways and Government of India in finalizing the financial and implementation models. The conference is being attended by policy makers, senior administrators, rolling stock manufacturers, research institutions, consultants and industry professionals from India and abroad. This will provide networking opportunities with senior railway officials as well as other stakeholders. There are opportunities for displaying capabilities through advertisements and exhibition stalls. For helping in better understanding of High Speed rail travel implementation challenges and their solutions, many equipment manufacturers are also present who will be presenting the latest development in high speed technology and the benefits thereof. Many international consulting experts as well as universities are also participating in the conference sharing their rich project experience in the field of high speed travel. Total of 49 papers will be presented in the conference, which include 25 papers by foreign delegates, 13 papers by Research Design and Standard Organisation and Indian Railways, and balance by the Industry and case-studies for high speed network from Australia, and SPAIN will be discussed during this two day conference. Eleven Countries representing the Conference are Germany, Spain, Australia, USA, UK, Japan, France, South Africa, Switzerland, Italy and China. Major rolling stock 'manufactures such as Bombardier, Talgo, CAF, Alstom and Siemens will be among those participating in the Conference. They will share their knowledge in high speed technology as well as experience in various parts of the world and also in providing low cost solutions. Shri Arvind Khare, Additional member, Production Unit, Railway Board who is also Chairman of IRSE and Chairman Organising Committee of the Conference proposed a vote of thanks on the occasion. It is expected that low cost solutions would emerge at the end of the deliberations to make high speed a reality for the developing world, where the demand is high, yet cost-effective solutions are evasive. - See more at: Railway Minister Launches High Speed Rail Corporation of India Limited (HSRC), Odisha Current News, Odisha Latest Headlines
