Harley Davidson launches two more bikes in Indian market

NEW DELHI, JAN. 5:
Performance biking and lifestyle brand Harley Davidson has announced the launch of two more bikes in the Indian market. The company is also extending its CKD operations with the introduction of these two brands from its Dyna range of motorcycles.

The FXDB Street Bob and the FXDC Super Glide Custom were unveiled at the Auto Expo here on Thursday. These two bikes were earlier offered as imports and will now be assembled at Harley Davidson India's facility at Bawal, Haryana, from knocked down kits supplied by the company's US parent.

The Street Bob, a tough big-twin with classic bobber style, will be the most affordable 1,600cc bike in India with a sub-Rs 10 lakh price tag, said Mr Anoop Prakash, Managing Director, Harley Davidson India. Riding enthusiasts can now place their orders at the company's seven dealerships around the country for the Rs 9.95-lakh bike.

The other bike that will now be locally produced will be the FXDC Super Glide Custom, which is a powerful custom-styled bike with a lot of chrome detailing, and will be priced at Rs 11.5 lakh, a reduction of Rs 4 lakh compared to its CBU price of last year.

According to Mr Prakash, as much as 50 per cent of its bikes are financed, a significant number, considering the profile of buyers of such high performance bikes.

Harley Davidson India is also increasing its footprint with the planned setting up of three more dealerships during 2012 in Kolkata, Kochi and Jaipur, taking the company's network to 10 by the year-end. The company has also started engine assembly at its facility in Haryana, enabling higher efficiencies. The range of bikes sold in India now extends from the Super Low that retails for about Rs 5.5 lakh to the CVO which is priced at Rs 35 lakh.

The company started CKD operations in January 2011 and has been assembling three bikes from the Sportster family. There are over 1,000 Harleys on Indian roads now.
