Half of wealthy Chinese plan to leave the country: Survey

BEIJING: Nearly half of China's super-wealthy individuals are considering leaving the country, a survey said on Monday, with most citing better overseas educational and employment opportunities for their children.

The global survey of 2,000 high net worth individuals by Barclays Wealth found that 47 percent of the wealthy Chinese who were questioned plan to move overseas within the next five years.

The Chinese semi-autonomous city of Hong Kong is their preferred destination, cited by 30 percent of respondents, followed by Canada with 23 percent, although earlier this year Ottawa closed an immigrant investor visa scheme that had been popular among wealthy Chinese.

The results show that "better educational and employment opportunities for their children is the main pull factor for Chinese high net worth individuals", according to the survey.

China has seen double-digit economic expansion in recent decades but faces mounting uncertainty over its pace of growth.

Its economic expansion has also come at great environmental cost, particularly in large cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, another factor among the country's super-wealthy in considering a move overseas.

The survey also found that a significant share of Singapore's wealthy, 23 percent, plan a move abroad in the next five years, even as the city-state remains a top destination for Hong Kong's rich.

In Hong Kong 16 percent of the wealthy said they plan to move, with 44 percent of these naming Singapore as their destination. Another 31 percent anticipated going to China.

Around the world, a little over half, 57 percent, of super-rich individuals have only lived in one country, with 20 percent having lived in three or more.

Ironically, India has much smaller economic expansion, while its cities the the most pollute in the world, but its billionaires don't even care about this.

Those Chinese billionaires who wants to leave this country is exaggeration. Indeed, some want to leave coz they are afraid of the anti-corruption campain, which they may be involved, while in India, the government officlals and the businessmen who were involved in corruption have no fear at all. India is really a heaven for corruption official and businessmen.

Indian cities are much better than Chinese cities except one or two.

Secondly it is CCP tight grip on chinese citizens that is making these people to leave the country.

Japan also expanded similar to china but not with pollution. Similarly other Asian Tigers.

Top 20 most polluted cities in the world - CNN.com

Air quality in most cities that monitor their pollution levels exceed what the World Health Organization deems as safe.

Delhi has the highest level of the airborne particulate matter, PM2.5 considered most harmful to health, with 153 micrograms. Not far behind is another Indian city, Patna with 149 micrograms. These figures are six times what the WHO considers a "safe" limit -- which is 25 micrograms.

Half of the top 20 cities in the world with the highest levels of PM2.5 were in India, according to the pollution data released by the WHO, which included 1,600 cities. Other cities with high levels were located in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

PM2.5 refers to the diameter measured in microns of particulates such as ammonia, carbon, nitrates and sulfate -- which are small enough to pass into the bloodstream and cause diseases such as emphysema and cancer.

The WHO data echoes an earlier study this year which found that air pollution in New Delhi is now worse than Beijing.

No Chinese cities ranked in the top 20 most polluted cities, despite thick, gray smog filling its cities and millions of residents commuting behind surgical masks. Beijing reported 56 micrograms of PM2.5. This year, Chinese leaders have declared "war on pollution."

Delhi has been described as having weak enforcement of pollution controls by India's Center for Science and Environment, a public interest group.

"Originally designed as compact entities to reduce the length of travel ... (Indian cities) are becoming victims of killer pollution, congestion ... and a crippling car-dependent infrastructure," according to the group.

And the world's most polluted city is...

Air pollution has spread by increasing reliance on fossil fuels, coal-fired power plants, cars and the use of biomass for cooking and heating.

Cities with the lowest level of pollution were located in Canada, the United States, Finland, Iceland and Sweden.

The truth is there to be seen in the videos and pics.

The stats you are presenting are the prime example of manipulation done in China right from GDP, socio economic to pollution stats.

China is most corrupted because of single party system.

These are data from WHO, not from China.

According to Corruption Perceptions Index 2013 - Results
in corruption index, China ranks only 80, while India ranks 94. Singapore is a one party monopoly, but it ranks 5 along with nordic countries. UAE and Qatar are even absolute monarchy, they rank 26 and 28, similar to Australia and France.

These organizations are west dominated and some nations do favor China when manipulating stats. for their own reasons. If a nation has power anything is possible out there.

this is really ridiculous argument. If China is so powerful as you said, Tibet and many negative issues are not an issue again. Anyway, you can continue your ridiculous argument.

when journalists or surveyer ask them why they want to go to west, will they be so stupid to say it is because of corruption issue? They would definitely make some excuses like education, pollution, blabla.

How can these rich ppl care about the employment of their kids? that is ridiculous, they can simply pass their asset and companies to their kids. They have broad relations among elites, which can easily allocate a wonderful job for their kids.
Sure, regarding the education and pollution issue, China is no better than the west. But the Chinese media plays an very important role. Every minute, Chinese media and social network compain about education, pollution, competition, dark side, blabla. And Chinese media always portray the outside world as a paradise, for example they even make rumors about India, they say in India, average salary is 2000 dollars/month, electricity/gas/medical are all free and of super quality, every poor ppl in India have a big/luxury house, blabla. These medias make rumors everyday, every minute, so as to make Chinese ppl feel unhappy. This is also a reason why these rich ppl want to go to west, coz they are brain-washed by the media to believe that the west is a paradise.

And then we see that the education/pollution in India is so terrible, I really admire that Indians are so tolerate to those bad conditions. We Chinese, as a race, really love complaining and unsatisfactory about everything and fantasizing better life.

Not the slightest of the doubts there!

Chinese are every where, those who can buy the PRs and citizenships overseas, do it at a drop of a hat, those who can't but are able to do it by buys assets or making investments, use this mean, and the rest rarely are able to do it through other means available. Majority, with bags full of money are hands down headed overseas, heck even to middle east, and never to look back.

Almost half of China's rich want to leave the country

It is rather surprising that the rich Chinese wants to leave the country that has, in the first place, made them rich.

Quality Education for children is an important issue, but they sure can do so by sending the children abroad. Does one emigrate to achieve this?

Or is it that they have realised that the Communist system, even though liberalised from the days of Mao, is still some sort of an open air Laogai (forced labour prison) and since they cannot bring in democracy, they can move themselves to lands where there is democracy and freedom?

In the olden days, the Chinese thrived on being expert dry cleaners, shoe makers or cobblers, cooks and being house boys in richer countries, but then they are rich now and it is obvious that the traditional expertise of the Chinese is not what they would want to do.

And since they would not do the traditional Chinese jobs abroad, they will surely require to know the language of the country they are emigrating to. And that would be possibly a handicap since they would not know or be fluent in the same.

So, why should they leave a life of luxury in China to go and somewhat be handicapped in another alien country?

    Merged as desired.

    My query still remains

I wonder if some Chinese poster would educate us as to why the rich Chinese, who have made money by living off China, should know want to abandon their home, hearth and Motherland!
