After producing MK1 in 40 numbers, The HAL production line will remain Idle for 4 years until MK2 comes in pictures.

The Government plan is to make sure HAL does not stop manufacturing Tejas in those 4 years, This is where Tejas MK1P comes in.

HAL production capability is 16 aircraft per year, In that sense we are looking at least 64 additional tejas MK1P in the Tejas fleet ..

Am sure we gonna push numbers of MK1 P to 60 + as 40 MK1 are already ordered . Fabulous news . MK2 AMCA will have more range and power punch for the future .

Truth is LCA Naval mk1 surprised experts in first ski jump test, rate of climb expected was 5.7 degree but aircraft actually achieved excess of 10 degree and angle of attack 21.6 degree

Why it is such a big deal?? Aircraft which had heavy undercarriage , landing gear , under power engine and labelled not carrier combat cabaple fought against odd in extreme sea level condition

hence this bird can take off aboard carrier with full combat load with current airframe and powerplant, but IAF still feels it's airforce cousin still not combat ready lol they need gripen and rafale so that they can spend trillions in upgrade

LCA-P1 will make it to both the carriers and keep the production running till mk2 comes in,10 out of 10 for both HAL and ADA for coming up with this new variant and it will pave way for quicker induction since there will be no major change in airframe

Who knows in future hybrid kaveri engine can also make a come back with mk1 and mk1P

We still dont know whether the present Naval tejas mk1 can take off with full load from carrier.We need confirmation. But the fighter performed far better than anticipated, which is a very good sign for tejas mk2 program.

The new ASEA and EW suit along with possible IRST device will make tejas on par with any modern 4.5th gen fighter when it comes to avionics.

Coupled with its low clean config RCS this new avionics set is a lethal combo.

Why IAF is not saying anything about it is actually surprising. In fact IAF should have proposed this idea to HAL. But sadly it is the other way around.

HAL wants higher order from IAF to justify sinking in more money in a bigger Tejas production line, hence this new suggestion. Lets see how IAF which is critically short of squadron strength will react to this.Hope it is proactive and takes the initiative.

HAL is currently plugging for more orders for the Tejas MK-I itself before it invests the around Rs 1300 crores required to bump up Tejas Mk-I production rates to 16 per year from the current 4-8 by 2016-17. For as HAL points out, if it does start cranking out 16 Mk-Is a year, its Tejas line will fall idle for a period of 4 years before Mk-II production commences without new orders beyond the 40 currently specified. Preliminary discussions in the Ministry of Defence (MoD) are therefore underway on the feasibility of an improved MK-I with features such as a dual colour missile approach warning system (MAWS) that can increase its survivability, satisfy the IAF and keep the HAL line humming at a rate of 16 aircraft per year.

Yup right not sure whether it can pick
Full combay load since thrre is no confirmation , but first test has proven that MK1 can be deployed in combat aboard carrier which was not
thought of earlier where it was branded as trainer for going into mk2 later

IAF as you know better even u put F-22 radar and EW suite to LCA will come back and tell we need F-35 one rather and GE-404 is low power engine hence we need Gripen with same engine can't change them DRDO and HAL should look beyond and IAF and concentrate on NAVY and export

AMCA should be naval fighter first instead of making a cry baby happy which is good only in crashing aircraft and blaming others

So HAL plans to take around 6 years to produce 40 aircraft and they want IAF to show interest. The maths does not add up.

Is there any recent source for these figures.

In January the previous Chairman Mr.tyagi had confirmed that 6 aircraft would be made in 2016 and the balance would be supplied till 2018. Looking realistically I would say 2019. And this corresponds to the information I have directly from HAL.

AESA Equipped LCA-1P right push for more orders of MK-1 Type ?

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) Chief T. Suvarna Raju finally revealed what was well known in Aviation circle about possible development of Tejas MK-I + aircraft which will be equipped with Modern AESA radar along with electronic warfare (EW) systems.

Indian Air Force (IAF) and HAL have been in discussion about additional orders for Tejas MK-I for a while now which has now been capped for 40 Aircraft’s of which first 20 aircrafts will be of IOC-II Standards and remaining 20 aircrafts of FOC Standards .

While Tejas MK-I has shortfalls in meeting the engine thrust and Other parameters, Defence minister Parrikar and Indian Air force Chief Arup Raha were satisfied with aircrafts Combat capabilities which were demonstrated when LCA participated in IRON FIST 2013 and showcased its fast turnaround time capability and switched between Strike mode and Aerial defence mode in same mission .

IAF Chief Arup Raha at Aero India 2015 had told that Tejas Mk-II which is been developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is expected to meet the Air Staff Requirement (ASR) of IAF and air force will place larger orders for MK-II Type which will be powered by more power Ge’s F414-GE-INS6 afterburner turbofan engine .

While IAF was adamant that it won’t place any additional orders for MK-1 type, HAL had informed MOD and IAF that once deliveries for 40 ordered Tejas MK-1 is over, Production line will be ideal for close to two years before Tejas MK-2 enters Production in 2021 and hence there were pushing for additional orders for MK-1 Type .

Equipping MK-1 with AESA radar along with electronic warfare (EW) systems will help reduce its shortfall and first aircraft will be ready by 2017 .if satisfied with aircraft’s performance, IAF will place further orders for 20 Tejas MK-1 + aircrafts according to Prominent journalist who has informed idrw.org about it .

Recently Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report had informed that first 40 MK-1 aircrafts will not be electronic warfare (EW) systems and will only come with Tarang-1B Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) which limits its electronics warfare (EW) capabilities .

Electronic warfare (EW) suite developed by the DRDO was successfully tested on-board country’s Light Combat Aircraft Tejas-PV1 earlier this year. While AESA radar developed for MK-2 which now also will be integrated on MK-1 + as been tested in its Air-to-Air Mode from high-rise building and will be upgraded with latest blocks of software to open up its true potential and IAF will also take stock of the AESA radar development this December along with developmental agencies to clear it for testing on board Tejas aircrafts.

New time line for MK2 is 2021 as MK2 is redesigned from the scratch as a whole new fighter with more range and advanced load can be carried . So kunal is right .

Sir, Indian establishment did it many times in past, when they don't want something.

Redesign it again and again and again, but never talk about big order.

Nothing new. All these drama is very sad.

BTW, who will pay for redesign work....?

And why they have to redesign it....!

May be in past . You need to understand the motive of this current govt is very serious on our National security and threat we may have to face in very short time . Sadly we need at least 5 years to catch up with decade of decay in armed forces preparedness . And my question is to IAF They keep improving and changing their requirements and capabilities for tejas but never raised questions about not changing the airframe to add all these new requirements ?

I strongly believe previous establishments worked in the favour of foreign mal. MK2 will be very different fighter than we all can imagine .It will better than J10B/C of Chinese if the intent of this government is true . Why we need to keep comparing ourself with Pakistan real threat is China . High time we bloody keep them at their place .

Major drawback of MK1 is its size .Which leads to less range and less ability to accommodate high tech sensor. Wonder why airframe changes not requested by IAF .Yes don't know that these PODs need more space to be carried on lCA ? Look at our Navy they have re all interest in this project .MK2 version will charm out from Navy's input greatly. MK2 itself navy's request only later IAF jumped in for more powerful engine . Blunder after blunder by IAF and inability to complete indigenous projects by psu responsible for this chaos

We are looking at 200 tejas initially . MK1 in IOC standard - 20 (on order)
MK1 in FoC standard- 20 "
MK 1- P standard with AESA and EW - 20 for sure as per some sources. May be another 20 or upgrades to all other MK1 to MK1-P . Until MK2 enters production line .possibly by 2021 or before for 100-120 or 10 /12 squadrons in total .Filling the gap for MRCA

Ordinance is more or less same for both fighter in category of Smart bombs and modern A2A missiles ..

Yes am aware . But latest report which postponed MK2 timeline to 2021/22 suggest MK2 will undergo major changes .And development of previous MK2 with few inches wide and larger air intake etc for F414 will be incorporated into MK1 itself .

Which now known as MK1-P .Previous DM mentioned it has MK1+ .This is as per our DM himself. To overcome recent debacles due to cancellation of MMRCA . So all the improvements ment for MK2 will go into MK1-P .And MK2 will be started from scratch making it a single engine MMRCA like J10B (I guess given the threat we face)
