British hero of the mall massacre: Ex Royal Marine with a handgun saved 100 lives as terrorists ran amok

The soldier, whose gun is circled, helps two women to safety. His identity has been protected for security reasons

A former marine emerged as a hero of the Nairobi siege yesterday after he was credited with saving up to 100 lives.

The ex soldier was having coffee at the Westgate mall when it was attacked by Islamists on Saturday.

With a gun tucked into his waistband, he was pictured helping two women from the complex.

His story emerged as sporadic gunfire continued to ring out from inside the mall early today as Kenyan security forces battled Al Qaeda-linked terrorists into a fourth day.

Despite Kenyan police assurances that they had taken control of the building, a security expert with contacts inside the mall said at least 10 hostages were still being held by a band of attackers, possibly as many as 13.

'You're a very bad man': Astonishing moment British boy, four, confronted Kenyan mall gunman"¦ who gave him Mars bars and begged for forgiveness

A four-year-old British boy caught up in the Kenya mall massacre showed astonishing bravery by confronting a marauding gunman who ended up begging for his forgiveness, it emerged today.

The child told one of the terrorists that he was a 'very bad man' as he protected his mother who had been shot in the leg, and six-year-old sister.

Incredibly, the attacker took pity on the family and bizarrely handed the children Mars bars before telling them: 'Please forgive me, we are not monsters.'

Kenya's foreign minister Amina Mohamed said 'two or three' Americans and one British woman were among those who attacked the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi.

His mother told of her family's terrifying escape from Al Shabaab terrorists who butchered 62 people in the Nairobi shopping centre.

The film producer had been queuing to buy milk in Nairobi's Westgate Shopping Centre when the militants struck.

She hid under a cold meat counter in the Nakumatt supermarket for an hour-and-a-half with her children beneath her before terrorists finally found them and shot her in the thigh.

The children's uncle told The Sun: 'They had a lucky escape. The terrorists said if any of the kids were alive in the supermarket they could leave.

'Their mother made the decision to stand up and say "yes".'

'My nephew started arguing with them and called them bad men. He was very brave.'

After discovering the advertising producer was of French origin, the men began to plead with her and claimed that the Muslim faith 'was not a bad one'.

'He told me I had to change my religion to Islam and said "do you forgive us? Do you forgive us?', the mother told The Independent.

'Naturally, I was going to say whatever they wanted and they let us go'.

Bizarrely, the terrorists handed the children Mars bars before they fled with two other children, including a 12-year-old boy who had at first refused to leave his dead mother.

The fate of 20 others who had taken refuge under the meat counter is unknown.

The family's escape is particularly astonishing in light of the indiscriminate slaughter of men, women and children throughout the mall after Al Shabaab launched their assault on Saturday.

Third Indian found killed in Nairobi mall attack

Another Indian, Sudharshan B. Nagaraj from Bangalore, was on Tuesday identified as among the 62 killed in the Nairobi mall attack by Islamist militants. This raises to three the number of Indians killed in the attack, the government said.

"The toll of Indian citizens killed in Westgate attack rises. Sudharshan B Nagaraj from Bangalore sadly identified as among those killed. He was in the book trade and had only come to Nairobi on September 20," said a short statement of the external affairs ministry.

The Indian High Commission in Nairobi is in touch with Mr Nagaraj's next of kin and associates to repatriate his mortal remains, it said.Earlier, Sridhar Natarajan, 40, from Tamil Nadu, and Paramshu Jain, 8, the son of a Bank of Baroda's Nairobi branch manager, were identified as among those killed by Islamist militants in their terror strike in Westgate mall in the Kenyan capital.

40 Indians feared dead in Kenya carnage: Survivors
'20 Gujaratis Among Victims, 100 Bodies Lying Inside Mall Popular Among Desis'
Bharat Yagnik TNN

Ahmedabad:The death toll of Indians, mainly Gujaratis, may be far higher than that reported, warned survivors and eye-witnesses of the terror attack on the upscale Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya.
"In Kenya, the death toll has been put at 70 so far. A huge number of dead bodies are lying inside the mall which have not yet been accounted for. Many of these are Indians. We estimate that the toll of Indians might reach 30 to 40," Ravi Vekhariya, a Gujarati real estate developer who has been inside the mall twice as part of the rescue team told TOI.
Deaths of seven Gujaratis have been confirmed in the terror strike. This includes three men — Mitul Shah, owner of an oil exporting firm, who had also organized the cooking competition at the mall, Anuj Shah and Rajen Solanki. The final rites of Anuj and Mitul will be conducted on Tuesday. The four women whose deaths have been confirmed in the strike include Neha Mushroo (16), Nehal Vekaria (17), Jyoti Vaya (35) and Malti Vaya (33).
Vekariya added that it is feared that more than 100 dead bodies are yet to be brought out of the mall. "The mall is located in an area dominated by Asians and Indians and there is panic in the area. The community is scared but has stuck together in these difficult times," he said. The temple run by Swaminarayan Gadi Sansthan organised a blood donation camp in Nairobi on Monday. Dr Kirtida Acharya of Gujarati-run MP Shah Hospital stated that even injured kids and toddlers are being brought to the hospital. "Out of the patients, there are more than 20 Gujaratis among injured. We suspect death of around 20 Gujaratis. The number might rise as identification of the victims is going on," she said.
Apart from MP Shah, Agha Khan Hospital is getting a number of victims from the mall attack. Arun Rabadia, stated that the Oswal communit hall, located next to the mall, has been converted into intermediate paramedical facility. The injured are provided primary treatment and, if required, are refering serious cases to hospitals. The victims are also being provided food, shelter and other amenities, Rabadia added.
"We have collaborated with Red Cross to extend all community help to the volunteers and security forces," said Mulji Pindariya, chairman of Hindu Council of Africa. The mall under siege had been a center point for Indian community settled around it. Vasant Patel, a local resident, stated that many of the families visited it at least twice a week for amenities and social get-togethers.
On the day of the attack, a cooking competition was held for the Asian community settled in Nairobi. Chetan Shah, a volunteer at a medical facility, stated that various control rooms have been established at community and government level so as to ascertain the real picture.

Neha Mushroo, the 16-yearold, was shot dead in the terror attack on Saturday. Her family migrated to Kenya from Jamnagar in Gujarat

Kenya forces 'end' Westgate mall siege

The four-day siege involving suspected Islamist militants at Nairobi's Westgate shopping centre is over, Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta says.

Five attackers were shot dead by troops and 11 suspects are in custody, he said in a televised address to the nation.

Kenya has "shamed and defeated our attackers" but the "losses are immense", he said, confirming that 61 civilians and six soldiers had died.

Three days of national mourning have been declared starting on Wednesday.

President Kenyatta said that several bodies were still to be recovered from the mall.

Somali Islamist group al-Shabab said it carried out the attack in retaliation for Kenyan army operations in Somalia.

The president said he could not confirm reports that a British national and two or three US citizens were involved in the attacks, but he said forensic experts were carrying out tests to ascertain their nationalities.

Israeli forensics experts in Nairobi helping with attack aftermath

Kenya's cabinet secretary Francis Kimemia wrote on Twitter that, "Leading forensic experts from other countries allowed to join including ISRAEL, USA and UK but Kenya leads."

Israel has had a role in helping the Kenyan government handle the crisis, but the extent of Israel's involvement is not entirely clear.

On Monday, Israeli defense officials confirmed a team was dispatched to Nairobi within hours of the hostage crisis.

The officials said the team was sent to advise authorities on the bloody standoff at the Nairobi shopping mall.

The officials, who declined to be identified because they were discussing a confidential security matter, would not say what types of services were being provided, but said armed fighting units were not part of the delegation.

"Israel is always ready to help other countries, other friendly countries, in combating terrorism. I think that terrorism has become a threat to the entire world and therefore countries — United States, Israel and other Western countries — should cooperate," Yuval Steinitz, Israel's cabinet minister for strategic affairs, told The Associated Press.

On Sunday, a Kenyan security source was quoted saying Israeli forces had entered the mall with Kenyan forces on Sunday, and were "rescuing the hostages and injured," AFP reported.

On Tuesday, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta mentioned Israel among the friendly nations who offered crucial assistance. Kenyatta singled out President Barack Obama, as well as the leaders of Israel and Britain, for their support.

The Westgate Mall, where the attack took place, is partially owned by Israelis.

Kenyan authorities prepared Wednesday for the gruesome task of recovering dozens more victims than initially feared after the country's president declared an end Tuesday to the four-day siege of a Nairobi mall by al-Qaeda-linked terrorists. Officials said the death count could jump by another 60 or more.
