Gujarat races ahead in manufacturing, leaves its peers far behind

PM Narendra Modi's 'Make In India' call is resonating in his home state — manufacturing projects worth over Rs 1.05 lakh crore were implemented in Gujarat in last three years.

Around 66 Industrial Entrepreneurs Memorandums (IEM) worth Rs 40,348 crore were implemented in Gujarat during the first 10 months of 2014 — highest among all states, said Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) data.

In terms of value, this comes to 60% of total projects worth Rs 67,600 crore implemented till October in India.

IEMs are filed by companies and industrial units with the ministry of commerce if they want to either set up new units or expand existing ones. They have to inform DIPP about commencement of operation.

Till October, 66 IEMs worth Rs 40,348 crore were implemented in Gujarat. Maharashtra trails with 42 IEMs worth Rs 5,437 crore, followed by WB, Uttarakhand, MP and Karnataka.

Sunil Parekh, member of the Vibrant Gujarat 2015 advisory board, says this is a result of the strong branding of Gujarat over the past decade. "The high rate of implementation indicates there is a coordinated effort by the government to complete projects," he said.

Prof Ravindra Dholakia of IIM-A said DIPP data primarily reflected the investment in manufacturing sector and that too by private players.

Major projects that got implemented during the last three years include new units of Essar Power, ABG Shipyard, Gujarat Industrial Power Corporation, Cadila Healthcare, expansion of Essar Steel, RIL, Garden Silk Mills and Lanxess India.
