GRSE Calcutta Bags First Major Warship Export Order

May 01, 2012, (Sawf News) - Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) has become the first Indian shipyard to bag a major warship construction contract from abroad .

On April 23, 2012 the keel of an Offshore Patrol Vessel (MOPV) ordered by Mauritius was laid during a ceremony attended by the High Commissioner of Mauritius, Dr Arye Kumar Juggessar, and GRSE Chairman & MD Rear Admiral (Retd) A.K. Verma.

On March 4, 2011, GRSE had signed a contract valued at $58.5 million to build the ship within 42 months of contract signing.

The 1350 ton MOPV would be 74.10 mtr long with a molded breadth of 11.40 mtr. It will have a top speed of 20 knots and a maximum range of 5000 nautical miles.

The ship would be fitted with state of the art Main Engines, Engine Control and Integrated Bridge System integrating all Communication and Navigation Systems.

The ships will have fully air conditioned modular accommodation for upto 93 personnel.

The multipurpose MOPV would be capable of performing Anti Piracy, Search & Rescue Operation, Anti Smuggling & Anti-Drug Surveillance, Anti Poaching Operation, Logistic Support Operation (including Transportation of Dry Cargo, Fuel Oil, Fresh Food), Pollution Response and External Fire Fighting, Transportation of Small Detachment of Troops/Personnel, Helicopter Operations (without hanger).

The ship, once constructed, will ensure safety and security in the Maritime Zones/EEZ of Mauritius.

42 months is like super lazy shipyard. they are taking so much time for an OPV which is just 1350 ton, though a good news but still performance wise not a good shipyard

Kolkata yard launches offshore patrol vessel for Mauritius
An offshore patrol vessel (OPV) – the first export order for an Indian-built warship – was launched on Friday by the city-based defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) for the Mauritian Coast Guard.

Christened "CGS Barracuda", the ship was launched by K.O. Fong Weng-Pooran, senior chief executive in the Mauritian PMO, in the presence of Mauritian High Commissioner Arye Kumar Juggessar.

The contract was inked on March 4, 2011, ushering in a new chapter for Indian shipbuilding with the first export order for a warship placed on an Indian yard.

The ship's keel was laid on April 23, 2012.

Contracted to be delivered within 42 months, GRSE expects to deliver the ship by September 2014, its chairman & managing director, Rear Admiral (retd) A.K. Verma, stated.

The 1,300 tonne OPV – 74.1 m long 11.40 m wide – will be capable of a maximum speed of 20 knots.

The fuel-efficient and cost-effective ship has been fitted with state-of-the-art main engines and an Integrated Bridge System catering to all needs of communication and navigation.

The ship will be provided with improved habitability with fully air-conditioned modular accommodation.

To be used for ensuring the safety and security of the maritime and exclusice economic zone (EEZ) of Mauritius, the OPV will be capable of undertaking multifarious roles such as anti-piracy, search and rescue, anti-smuggling, anti-drug surveillance and anti-poaching opertions.

It can also undertake logistics support, including transportation of dry cargo, fuel oil, fresh food, pollution response and external fire fighting, transportation of small detachment of troops or personnel and helicopter operations without a hangar.

Mauritius: A new ship of maritime surveillance, CGS Barracuda, officially put in water on Friday in India

The new patrol vessel of Mauritius, the CGS Barracuda, built the great peninsula, will be launched officially, on Friday, in Kolkata in India in the presence of several Mauritian officials, including the High Commissioner of Mauritius in India, Arye Kumar Jagessur.

The CGS Barracuda, long of 75 meters and can browse 5,000 nautical miles at a speed of 20 knots will be operational for the month of September 2014.

Equipped with high technology and advanced systems of electronic navigation equipment, the patrol will deploy in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) for various monitoring missions, and will fight against piracy, illegal fishing and drug trafficking.

The new patrol will also make its contribution to search and rescue operations carried out in Mauritian waters, as indicated in newspaper L'Express of Mauritius.
