Graft charges framed against Union minister Virbhadra Singh

SHIMLA: A special court in Shimla on Monday framed charges against Union minister Virbhadra Singh and his wife Pratibha Singh in the corruption case filed against them after the surfacing of a CD. Charges were framed on the basis of chargesheet filed by prosecution in October 2010.

The court's decision is being seen as a major setback to Virbhadra Singh who was aspiring to become the chief minister for sixth term and recently he had held a massive rally in Shimla to show his strength and to cement his claim for chief ministerial berth.

The much awaited order was pronounced by Special judge BL Soni. After hearing out the defense lawyers in the pre-trial arguments, court of special judge BL Soni during last hearing on June 6 had reserved its order for June 25 for framing the charges.

Recordings on the cassette are allegedly said to contain phone conversations of Virbhadra and his wife, talking to deceased bureaucrat Mohinder Singh, about illegal money dealing with some industrialists during the late 1989 and early 1990 period. After having completed the investigation in the case, the prosecution filed the charge sheet before the trial court in October, 2010.

Two days before the court verdict, Virbhadra Singh's supporters had held a rally in Shimla to project him as the undisputed leader of party in the state. But with court verdict on Monday now his detractors have started demanding his resignation from union cabinet.

    Interesting development this.

Virbhadr Singh was definitely going to be congress' CM candidate and now that his wife, Pratibha, is also in the dock, there are troubled times ahead for congress in Himachal. The big question, who gets to be the CM candidate now? I suspect, they will go without a CM candidate, and then later on if congress wins, Virbhadr will be the choice of the MLAs.

There is no way BJP will let go of this opportunity. They get to target the congress two ways, one embarrass them in the center and force Virbhadr out, and make this a big issue within the state where BJP is already accused of large scale corruption, so now BJP can turn the table and focus on Virbhadr Singh.

Of interest is also the timing of this as Himachal is slated for the elections by year end.

Poor bloke he had to resign.

He is one more Union Minister who had to bite the dust - the first amongst the Congress Party.

Notwithstanding the embarrassment, it has to be conceded that with the RTI, civil society agitation, media glare, the worms are coming out of the woodwork, to include till now hallowed spaces.

It actually is a good sign that India is maturing and the society is demanding accountability and not allowing anyone to be treated as a Holy Cow!
